Always remember that the EU did a study in 2013 about the effects of piracy on media publishers and found that there is no correlation between piracy and sales! (And then they tried to hide that study bc that's not the result they wanted)

Piracy is media preservation. Torrenting is literally the form of media storage which is most resistant to data loss. Dozens or hundreds of movies and even more television episodes no longer exist because the only copies were destroyed due to neglect, disaster, or deliberate destruction.

It wasn't that long ago that a number of lost episodes of Doctor Who were recovered because someone pirated them the first time they aired. That wasn't torrenting, but it was still the democratization of data preventing its permanent destruction as a result of the indifference of capitalism.

Hello, I work for a large moderately evil corporation and for at least five years now I have to sign a yearly thing to say I will never ever have one of these devices in the same room as me while I work.

My large moderately evil employer takes it for granted that these things are spying on me at all times, and you should too.

#back when I was doing the teaching thing #I went to manually change the music playing during free time #and a student asked why I don't use siri or Alexa or whatever #I explained to the whole class about how they're always listening.#student said no it only listens when you say its name!#I asked her how it knows you said its name if it's not listening #everyone got real quiet and several of them looked very distressed #now. these were mostly 7-9 year olds so I don't think I changed anyone's life that day #but I do like to think that at least a couple of them were the type to go home and tell their parents #anyway! friendly reminder that it's always listening!!!

there is a screen reader / magnification program that is the only one the low vision clinic knows of with these features and it is $650 Canadian Dollars behind specific approved vendors that require you to be geographically close to them and get government approval of a degree that I am only just now reaching after being visually impaired for going on seven years. I feel normal about this

if you can code a program that does any or all of the following:

Magnifies a display beyond standard options with keyboard / mouse movement inputs or voice commands,

Can read text on the screen,

Has different color filter options for text / background distinction,

Can change and magnify the cursor beyond standard amounts,

Works on Windows or more than just Windows,

Has a keyboard echo (says the character you've pressed on the keyboard out loud)

... there is a genuine, GENUINE need for you to code this and put it at a more accessible price point than $650 Canadian Dollars which I also just learned is a SUBSCRIPTION FEE AND NOT EVEN PERPETUAL. if you are reading this and able to code I am begging you. would genuinely change lives
