The words were spoken bluntly, but no malice. As if Yris were simply stating a fact about the man linked to Darkrai. Though she did not possess the eyes of truth like Yuri did, Yris was pretty confident in her read in people. And while he wore the shawl of a god, he was but a tiny little Cubone in the grander scheme of things.

"But instead of your mother's skull, the one you wear is of something you never asked to be, or wanted to be again."

Yukari told her. The truth behind this young man chosen by Darkrai. Of the soul that dwelled within Tobias.

Yes, instead of a Cubone who wore the skull of its mother, he instead wore the symbolic skull of his former self, of his old live. Forced into it, despite the grooves and cracks not being the same anymore. His soul had morphed and grown into something else and it was cruel watching it be forced into a vessel fashioned by a selfish god.

And yes, Morpheus could be so selfish.

quick little rundown of tobias' pokemon journey and how things played out. quick ... as in not quick and not brief at all.

tobias started his journey at the age of 10. his father gave him a riolu as a starter pokemon and then he said "im off to kanto", and no one knows why he didn't start in sinnoh, but he didn't. in kanto, he met entei, who very much found him endearing, so the volcano pokemon decided to tag along with toby on his journey. he met giovanni in viridian city as the ground type gym leader and was intimidated beyond belief, because he was 10. when he reached the league, his team was lucario, charizard, gengar, persian, dragonite, and entei. he had his ass handed to him by lorelei of the elite four, and was told to train hard and not give up.

so he didn't give up and he went back to training. at the age of 12, he went back and faced the elites at the indigo plateau again. his team was feraligatr, entei, arcanine, tyrannitar, umbreon, and lucario. and he had his ass handed to him by koga.

then he went to hoenn for a change of pace, where he met latios. it watched him on his journey, but showed no signs of wanting to join him, so he let it be. hoenn's league was the first time darkrai allowed tobias to take command in battle. his hoenn team was darkrai, entei, blaziken, flygon, skarmory, and dusclops. he actually had to battle wallace three times, as wallace said he would only give the badge if tobias battled without the help of the gods, and so that took three tries, but he did prove himself- he wasn't reliant on divine power. at this point, latios decided to travel with him, but refused to battle. tobias reached steven and lost.

when he went back to sinnoh at 15, he decided to take things a little slower for his home region's gym circuit. so he spent a year and a half just sorta hanging out and going to gyms every so often... and absolutely devastating his opponents because darkrai decided he liked battling. so the rumor was that tobias had defeated 8 gym leaders with only darkrai. this is actually untrue, he does have an entire team, darkrai, latios, entei, lucario, flygon, skarmory, and he didn't start things off with darkrai, lucario was his gym circuit opener, but damn, when people see a god, that's all they remember. after defeating 8 gyms, the alamos town disaster happened, tobias literally was unmade for a hot minute and then came back to life. a few months later, he entered the lily of the valley conference because why do therapy when he can throw hands. he has his epic battle with satoshi, wins the conference, and faces the elite four with a full team of 6, starting with lucario and finishing with darkrai. he wins against cynthia and accepts the title of sinnoh champion ... and all the responsibilities that come with it.

at 19 he went to unova, his battle with alder ended in a draw. at 21 he was in kalos and he lost to diantha. he didn't compete in gyms in galar or paldea or alola, because he just wanted to explore and have fun.

the tldr of this though is people thought tobias was this invincible prodigy, and while he very much is a prodigy, he was not undefeated, although since taking over as sinnoh champion, his only losses have been to other champions. but maybe that will change if someone exceptional crosses his path ...

tobias gaudí, age 24, is the current champion of the sinnoh region. he has been since the age of 17 where he won the lily of the valley conference, he is still quite close with cynthia who has mentored him to feel more comfortable in a leadership role.

he was born in floaroma town, but grew up mostly in alamos town.

he has a team of 3 standard pokemon and 3 divine ones, but the gods rarely go into battle. and by this, i mean his league team- but of course as any trainer does, he has more pokemon that stay with his grandparents in alamos!

he is the partner of the god of sleep, darkrai. evidently they met in the gardens in alamos when tobias was a child.

he is notably incredibly religious, if asked, he is open about his faith in the gods and his devotion to them.

he is in possession of a holy relic.

tobias is capable of umbrakinesis. think pride from fullmetal alchemist brotherhood.

he is also capable of oneiromancy, or the ability to dreamwalk. and through this, he acts as an oracle. think oracle of delphi, or cassandra. cryptic and haunted. and never wrong.

he is a reincarnation of a former king, sanivar harmonia, who ruled over unova hundreds of years ago. sanivar was also a chosen of darkrai.

the previously mentioned holy relic is 'darkrai's mantle', which is the red scarf tobias always wears. it boosts his natural abilities as an oracle.

he also is the current wielder of the glaive of promised end, darkrai's divine weapon.

he is going through apotheosis, as the previous oracles of darkrai have gone mad and chosen death over constant horrors, darkrai decided on a new tactic, which is keep this one alive forever. he will become 'somnus, dream-weaver'. (look at where your devotion has brought you!) and he did not ask for or want this, but he's too nice to argue it, i guess.

he is the descendant of olthedir the wild, a legendary mage and child of the gods who served under the ancient king of galar. olthedir's bloodline was said to have died out, something said to keep the bloodline safe. because you know, having a captive oracle to serve is... oddly appealing to corrupt people in positions of power.
