2012 3rd Party Candidates
Okay...so I ended up watching the 3rd party candidates debate online last night...and let's just say that I was quite impressed with what I saw!!! I have tons of respect already for Johnson, Stein and Anderson...(don't get me started with Goode...at least he has a funny southern accent.) LOL. From the notes I scribbled down last night and browsing each of their websites this morning, I took 7 of the issues (the biggest issues + issues of my concern) and I've written up somewhat small, to-the-point paragraphs on what they stand for. Hope this helps some of you out!!!
The positions of Gary Johnson and the Libertarian Party:
1.) Economy: Former Governor Johnson has 3 ways he says can help with our economy and reduces our growing deficit. He wants to cut government spending, cut taxes, and reduce the federal governments’ involvement in the economy. Johnson would revise Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security (3 items that substantially add to the budget.) Johnson would cut military spending down to the bare minimum needed to rightfully protect this country. Additionally, Johnson would bring all our troops home immediately and end the combat overseas. And finally, he would cut the IRS. Oh, and Gary Johnson would legalize Marijuana and have it regulated, that way, the country can make money off of it, and we can stop wasting money on arresting people for having it.
2.) Health Care: Johnson does not believe that Obamacare is a rational solution to this health care problem. Johnson says that if health care would become free of government mandates and have less regulation, that there would be more competition among insurance companies. Basically, Gary Johnson believes that competition will help drive down cost, which in turn, would give individuals less expensive, proper health insurance.
3.) Political Reform: Gary Johnson does not like the strong partisanship that is being played out by the Republicans and Democrats in office. He believes that everybody is so focused on sticking to what their party wants them to do, or what people will want them to do so they can stay in office. Johnson and the Libertarian Party are in favor of term limits so politicians won’t have to constantly worry about elections and they can do their job to serve the people.
4.) Education: Gary Johnson believes that the government should not be determining how much money schools get and what they do with it, he believes that schools should be free of government regulation so they can take the money and talk with their students and parents to figure out what their school needs. By allowing the school itself to decide how to spend funds, students and parents are more likely to be involved and have a more positive learning experience.
5.) Abortion: Gary Johnson supports the woman’s right to choose.
6.) Gay Marriage/Rights: Gary Johnson believes that, “Government should not impose its values upon marriage. It should allow marriage equality, including gay marriage.” I like how that is well said…I feel like most of regular society sees no problem with gay marriage, but lots of right wing people, and people in congress seem to be ignorant to this issue. And I’m sure there are some politicians who are scared to support same-sex marriage because they are afraid to lose votes.
7.) Climate Change/Energy: First of all, Gary Johnson believes that the government should have no business in trying to manage and promote energy production. He says by promoting certain energy sources, and giving tax breaks to others do nothing to sway consumers into getting energy from one source or another. He does think that Climate Change is a rational concern, but common sense needs to be applied when tackling the subject of energy. So in short, Johnson believes that the marketplace will dictate where our energy development should go and that the government should just keep their hands off.

The positions of Jill Stein and the Green Party:
1.) Economy: Jill and the Green Party believe that it is important to protect the young and the helpless. They do not favor the idea of privatizing social security. They also support taking excess money from military spending, and reinvesting it into living-wage job development and work training programs. In addition, they support public funding for the development of living-wage jobs in community and environmental service, for example, environmental clean-up, recycling, sustainable agriculture and food production, sustainable forest management, repair and maintenance of public facilities, neighborhood-based public safety, aides in schools, libraries and childcare centers, and construction and renovation of energy-efficient housing. And finally, they believe that “by forcing welfare recipients to accept jobs that pay wages below a living wage drives wages down and exploit workers for private profit at public expense. They reject workfare as being a form of indentured servitude.”
2.) Health Care: Stein and the Green Party believe that health care is a right and not a privilege. They would enact a single payer, universal form of health care. With this system of health care, individuals would be able to still choose their doctor, and they will be able to make health decisions together, not the insurance companies.
3.) Political Reform: Crack down on big government and remove corporations from the election process. They would like to set donation limits so a campaign cannot get a ton of money from one wealthy individual. Additionally, she and the green party would eliminate all ballot access laws and rules that discriminate against smaller parties and independent candidates. Also, she would like to open all presidential debates to all candidates (as long as each candidate is on enough state ballots to possibly win the Electoral College). I found it interesting that if elected, Stein and the Green party would make Election Day a national holiday and/or have weekend elections. They are also in favor of increasing the number of poll places and the pay for poll workers.
4.) Education: Jill Stein and the Green Party believe that higher education should be attainable to every individual equally. They are in favor of providing free college tuition to all qualified students at public universities and vocational schools. Furthermore, they want to ensure that student loans are available to all college students. With forgiveness to graduates who choose public service occupations.
5.) Abortion: Jill Stein and the Green Party believe that women’s rights, especially women’s reproductive rights are non-negotiable. Women have the right to make these tough decisions for themselves free from harassment, job discrimination and other negative outside influences. They believe that there must be clinics open that can handle women’s questions about contraception and abortion. They are also in favor of making contraception even more available.
6.) Gay Marriage/Rights: Supports it. They encourage the rights of people to choose intimate partners regardless of sex, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation. She also believes that individuals have the right to undergo gender reassignment surgery without harassment and coercion from others. Also, they are against all forms of hate crimes and who prosecute criminals to the fullest extent of the law.
7.) Climate Change/Energy: One of the main benchmarks of the Green Party is to ensure environmental protection and stop global climate change. Of course, they do believe that climate change is real and that things need to be done to stop it. I loved how they mentioned this issue;
“Climate change is the gravest environmental, social and economic peril that humanity has ever met. Across the world, it is causing vanishing polar ice, melting glaciers, growing deserts, stronger storms, rising oceans, less biodiversity, deepening droughts, as well as more disease, hunger, strife and human misery. It is a tragedy unfolding in slow motion. Greenhouse gases warm the Earth by trapping heat in the atmosphere. Much of that heat is initially absorbed by the ocean, creating roughly a 30-year delay in the impact of that heat at the surface of the planet. Practically speaking, that means that the melting glaciers and expanding deserts of 2009 were the result of greenhouse gases dumped into the atmosphere in the late 1970s, when the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was below 350 parts per million (ppm). To return to a safe level of greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere, we must reduce atmospheric greenhouse gases as quickly as possible to levels that existed before 1980, to 350ppm carbon dioxide. Greens support science-based policies to curb climate change. We have an ambitious plan to make drastic changes quickly to avert global catastrophe. We will expend maximum effort to preserve a planet friendly to life as we know it by curtailing greenhouse gas emissions and actively removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.”
I’ll try to simply explain how they want to accomplish this. First of all, they want to get other countries across the world to acknowledge climate change as an issue so we can all work together to stop it. Secondly, we must conserve and limit the amount of nonrenewable, harmful sources of energy we are currently using. And thirdly, we must start moving to using renewable resources and make clean energy. Not only would this help our environment, it would help our economy by adding more jobs.
Additional information on Jill Stein’s and the Green Party’s platform can be found here: http://www.gp.org/committees/platform/2012/ -Not only do they have detailed plans on the hottest issues, there is also interesting info about protecting the Native Americans and plans for fighting the AIDS/HIV epidemic.
The positions of Virgil Goode and the Constitutional Party:
1.) Economy: Goode and the Constitution Party say they will balance the budget by cutting and eliminating many of the government programs already in existence. He will combine that with getting illegal immigrants out of the country. (By doing this, there will be more jobs open for Americans.) He wants to produce more fossil fuels here at home and he will stop issuing green cards until the unemployment rate drops to below 5%.
2.) Health Care: The only statement on his website referring to health care says, “I support ending Obamacare.”
3.) Political Reform: The only thing that appears Goode would want to change in the political world is by putting term limits on those who get elected to Congress. He believes that having term limits would allow politicians to focus more on meeting the needs of the people and not continuously worry about their next election.
4.) Education: (There is no mention of education on Virgil’s website…but…last night in the debate, he said that he would end giving out Pell Grants…he said that we simply can’t afford to keep giving out Pell Grants and adding more money to our national debt.)
5.) Abortion: Goode has consistently been against abortion. He even beams about how the National Right to Life Political Action Committee commended him on his 100% pro-life voting record during his 12 years in Congress.
6.) Gay Marriage/Rights: Goode does not support gay marriage and believes marriage is something that is reserved for one man and one woman. He also supports the Federal Marriage Protection Amendment.
7.) Climate Change/Energy: Goode does not address climate change specifically. However, he mentions how he would expand production of fossil fuels here in this country. He wants to dig for more oil here, coal, produce natural gas and even more nuclear energy. He believes that by producing valuable fossil fuels here at home, we can end our dependence on foreign oil, and increase revenue here while also increasing jobs.

The positions of Rocky Anderson and the Justice Party:
1.) Economy: Rocky Anderson believes he can help turn this economy around by strengthening labor laws, tax incentives for local companies, progressive taxation, and promoting fair trade. He believes that by giving workers more power to push for more benefits and deserving pay will create an environment where workers and employers can settle on better deals for the workers. Anderson thinks that raising taxes on the wealthiest people is fair since they took advantage of this country to better themselves, that they should be willing to give something back.
2.) Health Care: Anderson argues that the United States is the only industrialized nation in the world that does not provide basic health care to millions of people. The Justice Party favors the single-payer system that is widely popular in Canada. Not only would the single-payer system drastically cut medical cost…everybody would be protected and would be able to receive necessary health care.
3.) Political Reform: Rocky Anderson would end corporate welfare and put in place campaign finance and tax reform. This would limit the power of corporate donors over politicians. Not only would this plan decrease corporate welfare, but it would actually increase revenue in this country by ending ineffective monetary incentives to corporations, this in turn, would help solve our debt problem.
4.) Education: (Anderson’s website does not have a section for education…or maybe I didn’t find it. In last night’s debate, he talked about how we needed to lower college tuition costs, but I didn’t hear enough of it to make an official statement here on my blog.)
5.) Abortion: Anderson and the Justice Party believe that the decision for a woman to have an abortion should be between herself, her doctor, and anyone else she wants to inform. It is not the right of the government to make this decision more difficult, or even worse, try to ensure that she has the baby.
6.) Gay Marriage/Rights: Mr. Anderson and the Justice Party totally believe in equal rights for the LGBT community. When Rocky Anderson was mayor of Salt Lake City, he signed an executive order which barred discrimination against any person for sexual orientation. He has even been a grand marshal at Gay Pride parades. Last night in the 3rd party presidential debate presented by Free and Equal.org, he was asked if he could pass any one amendment knowing it would make it through congress, Anderson said he would place an amendment in the constitution where LGBT people can have same rights and privileges as straight people. This would account for marriage, hospital visitation, and tax rights.
7.) Climate Change/Energy: Rocky Anderson believes that climate change is occurring, and that the government needs to take more responsibility into and looking at this problem. Rocky Anderson has listed 6 things that our government needs to accept about this issue on his website. If elected, Anderson would gather the top scientists and climatologists and start working on this issue. Anderson would end tax cuts to fossil fuel providers and give massive tax breaks to people and companies who start producing clean energy. And he would reinstate FEMA’s Project Impact, a program that allows public and private entities to work together, especially during an environmental crisis.

Well...that's that. I admire these 4 people for standing up for what they believe in and try to get their voices heard against the two big parties...if I were to vote, I think I would honestly vote for Jill Stein. From what I saw in the debate last night, I really liked her and I do think Climate Change is occurring, so she and the Green Party would best suit me. After her, I like Gary Johnson and I agree on most of his policies. Have a great day everyone and take care!!!! :-)
