That post about westerners romanticizing communism is so unhelpful. Calling westerners spoiled brats as if we don’t also have secret police, executions, black markets, mass surveillance, controlled education, and rationing (if you don’t have money you don’t eat) under capitalism. These things are actually crucial to the continuation of capitalism.
How is me as a westerner talking about not wanting to live in an oppressive system that values profit over humanity and nature, especially the humanity and natural resources of oppressed nation-states and peoples a privileged viewpoint?
The critiques of the actions of people acting in the name of communism and the actions individuals and groups have taken are valid and Westerners need to be aware of these things if they’re going to participate in these discussions. But I also think that generalizing and discounting anti-capitalist viewpoints as privileged and oppressive while also somehow praising the (still capitalist) nordic model is shallow analysis and won’t help us moving forward at all.
[edit: I expanded on this here as I feel like the conflation of communism with Marxist-Leninism is the main issue I take with that original post : https://corbinstudies.tumblr.com/post/170242453179/i-think-a-lot-of-confusion-when-talking-about]
