There was a joke in germany a little while ago about how youtube kept showing us all the same ads for a website that says they'll buy our used cars. This perfectly exemplifies a thought I've had about targeted advertising for a long time.

At the end of the day, ad spaces go to the companies that buy them. My personal profile doesn't matter because the car buyers bought a fuckton of ad space so now I get to see their stupid commercial even though it's transparently obvious that I do not own a fucking car!

Inversely, I actually did some extended online shopping for HEMA equipment but I'm not buried in ads for SPES because they're a niche hobby supplier so investing a lot in google adsense would just kind of be a waste of money for them.

I've been aggressively blocking ads on all my devices for a while now so maybe I'm just missing it but from where i'm sitting the whole personalized ads business just seems like a big scam for all parties involved.
