One thing you should know...

The question I'm asking: If you could pass along just one lesson, tip or piece of advice to your future children...what would it be? Sometimes we would rather take advice from total strangers than from our own parents, family members or friends. Here is a space where you can read some tips, advice and life lessons from strangers who wish to pass them along. Feel free to submit your own.

Take a chance. Do something that anyone else would say that you’re not supposed to do. The one thing that I appreciate most about my parents is that they never really told me that I’m not allowed to do things. They sort of just said their opinions and let me make my own decisions. Sometimes, it worked and sometimes I came back in tears. But in the end, there was always a lesson to learn from it. I didn’t come back from any experience empty handed.

I was driving down the street in Houston and pull up next to a man standing on the corner named Jimmy, who didn't have a home. I gave him $20 and he said, "God bless you" then he told me "always remember when you think you're weak, you're strong." Those words came from a man who didn't know where his next meal will come from. Those are now the words I live by.

I would tell them not be afraid and not let someone else define who they are. It’s hard to be yourself when you’re surrounded by people who pressure you into being something else. Just let loose, enjoy what you do, find the positive in life even when there’s not much to be positive about. I would want them to be happy and do what they think is right and not follow other ignorant examples.

“What’s meant to be will be”. I hold on to those words dearly. I learnt that life doesn’t always happen the way you want it to, but life will go the way it should and most of the time you’ll realise that it’s actually a good thing that it went the way it did. So if you don’t get something to go the way you want it to, don’t fret. If you truly believe that it should go the way you want it to, have hope, life will eventually go in that direction.

Live with no regrets. Have a big adventure, take a lot of photos, love everyone, cherish all the memories you have, so at the end you will die happy. Start livin’ and stop hatin’.

Know when to let go of things, sometimes the things you think you want or need, could be the thing that’s preventing you from being better, and happier. You need to be aware of when it’s time to move on, it’s hard to say goodbye but sometimes it’s for the best.

Always keep your mind open. If something confuses you, think critically about it and ask questions. No harm can ever come from educating yourself.

In life you’ll see friends come and go, but as you grow older you’ll see that only a select few stick around. Family is foundation and always keep them close. Be yourself and don’t be afraid to be different. Life has its ups and downs, but know that you’ll get through them. Life is only as hard as you make it. Remember that.

I might not agree entirely with you all the time but if you think that’s what you’ve gotta do (and if that’s the right thing to do), do it kid. Life isn’t easy and I’m not saying that yours is bound to be any easier than mine. Just know that whenever you feel tired there’s always a place you can come home to, there’s a person that will love you regardless.

Love. By that, I mean, not just one other special person. Love your parents, your family. Love your friends. Love your pets. Love what you do. Love that book, that movie, that song. Love that stranger. Also love that special person too. Love yourself. Love life. Love everything and everyone.

Don’t waste your time with people that you don’t want to be around, or that make you like yourself less. You will save so much energy that can go towards better things if you do this. Hold onto the relationships that make you be the best version of yourself. It’s hard to live by this philosophy, but I try to, and when I do I feel good about myself.
