I have a complicated relationship with kinning, l've never really connected with any terms that have been circulating around. It's hard to explain, but I do like to consider & call these characters Myself. Though, I am able to separate myself from them. Memories and past lives and whatnot is private to me unless we share medias and such. ^_^ doubles r iffy, but I won't block! I'm always down to chat about our media :-)

from my understanding therian refers to animals we have on earth such as cats, dogs, fish, birds etc.

otherkin can refer to those who refer to any sort of non human being! bc if this it can include mythical or non earthy species like aliens, mermaids, zombies, etc.

however i know the terms can mean diffrent things to diffrent people. i am more than glad to be corrected if anyone else knows a clearer answer but this is from my knowledge on the terms ╭( ･ㅂ･)و

no, the “scientifically documented earth animals” specifier is a myth! therian means identifying as any nonhuman animal on any level, to any extent, which means it includes mythical / magical animals (unicorns, dragons, deities), alien animals (tribbles, chadoos), fictional animals (pokemon), animals as metaphor or archetype (lone stag, top dog), etc etc…

the original “prototypical” therian being someone with an internal duality of “humanside” and “wereside”, is also mythically-based on werewolf legends—which is interesting to compare to how younger/newer therians seem to identify as more nonhuman-minded than dual-species-minded (from what i’ve seen, at least, as someone in and out the community since the 2010s. but i’m an outlier in my own generalization as a longtimer gone holothere 🤷‍♂️).

“otherkin” (c. 1980s mailing lists) itself used to be the more generalized term for nonhuman identity in the human world, but “therian” branched off as its own community around the 90s via the internet iirc.

i do not know siren lore but generally i’d say otherkin, tho more unhuman-presenting types could possibly fall under “theriomythic” … rly it’s all up to you though!

hello!! im currently trying to figure out if im a mermaidkin and would love hearing about experiences from any mercreature! if theres any thing or feeling or experience that helped you kinda figure it out id love to hear:)

Hi hi!! I’d love to share! (And if anycreature would like to add on, please feel free to!) 

below cut: 3 paragraphs, 1 about kinsidering, 1 about my experiences, 1 about kinsidering tips

As a mercreature, there’s been an obvious magnetic attraction to water- but for me specifially, I did a LOT of research on different renditions of merfolk and sea creatures, mythical and not- still am! That’s how I found out about Siokoy and Sirena- I knew when I saw them they were me, and figuring out how my gender expresses through that was my next big hurdle (if you didn’t know, they’re a dimorphic species- Siokoy are male, Sirena are female) 

As for experiences, I actually live in a landlocked place with next-to-no water, so my experience are very interesting- mostly baths and hotel pools, but I make it work ^^ I’ve found that water is a VERY good way to stimulate your body and cause shifts in a soothing manner, even if you’re not actively swimming (like taking baths, like me!)

My biggest takeaway and tips for kinsidering- log your shifts. Time and what you feel, any type of shift. I actually learned that I have a shift that is almost ONLY nocturnal, that might be the case for others, and linking different types of physical shifts can help put the puzzle together about what you’re feeling (whether it be one or multiple, who knows? Ha!)

(Extra: shhhh you didn’t hear it from me but @gone-fish-mode has the best writings about alterhumanity in the history of ever and s/he’s a Gillman!)

I think I'm a mermaid in captivity. Not in the "I'm getting experimented on" kind. More of "I am curious about humanity, and now im here to perform to spread joy!" Type one. But it's literally because I awakened from humans dressing as mermaid and doing that exact thing.

Species euphoria goes brr when I daydream about being in that one place in Florida (I forgot what it's called), but there's a bridge where you see mermaid at the bottom swimming and welcoming you.
