weasleyxlouis:
He winced at the same word. “I’m not going through anything like that. Thank you for your offer, but those aren’t my kind of problems.”
“These ears are good for listening to any kind of problem. Promise. They’re not selective.” Kate gave him a warm smile, but knew not to press. “But if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s okay. Do you want me to distract you instead?”
deeper-end-of-dupond:
“I can get references I’m sure. I could do a few bouncer shifts a week,” it sounds less like him the more he discusses it and juggling multiple jobs sounds exhausting but also a good way to stockpile money so he’s in. “You ‘ave aurors applying for these jobs though?”
“Not as many as I would like. But Aurors are needed everywhere now-a-days, so I can’t say I don’t understand. It’s mostly Aurors still in training or fresh out of the academy. But that’s why I’m always looking for more trustworthy security, like I said. You’ll move up quickly if you prove yourself. And the pay is good.”
augustuswood:
Why was she so infuriating? With every stutter, every time she stumbled over a word, it pissed him off more and more. Augustus let out a dry laugh. “Murder is wrong,” he mimicked, loudly. “Kate Stone, talking so profoundly from her moral, principled high horse, everybody.” He leaned forward further now, voice dropping harshly to a whisper. “What if it wasn’t the only choice I had? I could’ve run. I could’ve… I don’t know, fucking hid under a table, or something. But no. My choice was to go out there and fight and kill someone. I could make that choice again. Now, even. Do you know how fucking easy it is to take somebody’s life?”
His tone was more even now, but infinitely more vicious. He wanted to scare her. She should be running from him. “No. I meant what I said – you can’t put shit in my mouth any more, or make bullshit excuses for me. I loved destroying you more than I could’ve ever loved you. Kate, baby, you honestly meant nothing to me, and if I could do it again, I would.” He just rolled his eyes at the last part. “No. On second thought, he’s probably fine. You cured him! Another win for Kate! Should I call his parents?”
This wasn’t Augustus talking. Not the Augustus she knew, anyway. This Augustus was terrible and terrifying. She was trying not to be afraid, because even as he said it was easy to kill someone, she knew he couldn’t mean it, and she knew he wouldn’t hurt her.
She knew that. Right?
She thought she did. Kate thought she knew Augustus pretty well, that she had him all figured out, until he started spewing out those hateful, awful words. They carved into her deeper than she thought they could, given the fact that she’d been over him for quite a while now and was already falling for someone new. But they did. They struck her heart and lodged there deep, causing tears to spring to her eyes. “Stop that.” Her voice came out hardly above a whisper. “What do you want me to do, get mad at you? After you’ve been through something traumatic?”
She could very easily get mad at him. She even felt it bubbling up as the tears spilled over, but she grit her teeth as her emotions warred. Jumping up from her seat, she spun to stand in front of him so she could yell at him properly. “You want to be an asshole when someone’s just trying to help you? Fine. Be an asshole. I’ll be your punching bag. But I’m not buying it. You’re going to owe me one hell of an apology, but when you’re ready to actually let someone in for once in your fucking life, Gus, I’ll still be here, because I believe that you might actually be a good person beneath all this shitty- fucking- shittiness you’re spewing right now.”
pridefulpuff:
“Standing up for oneself is harder, way harder, but it’s worth it. You’re right, we can’t let the bad guys win. “
“I just wish there was something more to do than... sit around waiting to fight again. I’m not putting my life on pause, but I also want to be proactive and prepared. I want to know who I can and can’t trust. You know?”
maytelesslucille:
“It’s just a silly little legend, something to add to the Beedle the Bard. The element one might be easier to throw together last second and have everyone feel like they can know what to do for the theme.”
“That’s true, but now I’m curious. Element night for now. Mayte later, when I’ve done enough research to make it good enough.”
the-storm-macleod:
Comfortable isn’t the word I’d use for drunk people. Obnoxious is more often the case in my experience.
“Yeah, some people can get obnoxious. But the second anyone starts getting rude, or mean, they’re out. I don’t tolerate anything more than happy, fun drunks in my club.”
Backdated St. Mungo’s
scorped-by-the-gods:
“I’ll have to keep it up then. Treat you more like garbage sometimes,” he teases.
He closes his eyes and hangs his head with a sigh that’s probably more dramatic than it needs to be, ignoring her soft stroking of his jaw and the pointed remark about saving one person. “Do something in some other way. Help with relief efforts after, healing even, donate to something, petitions, protests of….whatever. You don’t need to fight. Most of those people-they have no business doing what they did either. They just get in the way and create more chaos. You can stay out of it. Nobody’s life should be on your conscience.”
Kate scrunched her face up at him, knowing full well he was only teasing. After all, she would hardly take being treated like garbage. Not again, not in this lifetime.
The thing about this conversation was that it was taking place now. And while Scorpius made a lot of good points - and Kate was doing what she could as far as donations and relief efforts, because that was also the kind of person she was - she would feel useless if, during an actual battle, she did nothing but run.
Still, he did make a lot of good points. And the more Kate thought about it, the more she thought about people getting in the way when they only wanted to help.
“I know it might not seem logical, but I think about Evelyn every day,” she said softly. “I didn’t even know her all that well. I just knew her through Ed. My friend. And he cared about her and loved her, maybe, even, and then I saw.... I saw her get tossed into the water. I saw her get killed. I was too late. I fought, I- I hoped distraction at least could give her time to get out, but I was too late. I think about it all the time. I- I think I’m trying to be faster. I’m trying not to be too late again.”
It sounded stupid, maybe, and she felt foolish as she hung her head and bit at her bottom lip. “But maybe.... Maybe I can focus on trying to save the people who are already hurt, instead. Learn more about healing. I don’t think I could ever be a real mediwizard, but if I’m in the chaos of a battle I would at least like to know enough to help people until a real healer gets there. It’s not staying out of things completely, and I’d have to make sure my shielding charms are really, really strong.... and I would still fight. If I had to- if you were under attack? If Natalie were about to be killed? Of course I’ll fight. Wouldn’t you fight for me?”
A risky question, maybe, and one she was scared to know the answer to - but she had to ask it, all the same.
Her aura is made of poetry, roses, and galaxies.

augustuswood:
Augustus flinched when she touched him, snapping him out of his reverie, arm retracting automatically at the sensation. His wild eyes found hers. What was with her? “I fucking told you I just murdered someone, and you’re still – you’re fucking okay with that? You’re not mad? Surprised? You’re not even running away or trying to get away from me.” He wasn’t sure why she was making him so mad. “I’m so – I’m fucking terrible to you. I broke your fucking heart, didn’t I? And I enjoyed it. I loved it.” He was being cruel, and personal, and mean, but it felt somewhat exhilarating to shout at her, even if his words held little truth. “So why are you still here?”
Kate reeled back, hand flinching to her side as he yelled at her. She didn’t know what she had been expecting. It should have been this.
But of course, it couldn’t have been this. Kate didn’t expect the worst out of people, she expected the best. And so, his words stung like a slap to the face. She sat there for a moment, stunned into silence, before she swallowed and tried to start from the beginning. “I’m not okay with it. Murder is- it’s- it’s wrong. Of course I don’t condone it. And of course I’m surprised, b-but... But it was a terrorist attack. Th-The... the gala. People were fighting for their lives. I can’t... I can’t be mad or scared if you were... if you did it to protect yourself, or someone else. If it was the only choice you had.”
Firmly, with conviction, she leans back in towards him. “You don’t mean that, anyways. You’re not... You’re not terrible to me. You broke my heart, sure. Maybe. But you didn’t enjoy it. You’re just saying that because you’re... well, you’re a mess, and you’re looking to be punished. But Gus, I don’t know why you killed someone. I don’t know the circumstances. You haven’t told me yet. I mean... are you sure you even killed them?”
weasleyxlouis:
“I know, but I’m tired of hearing it. I’m tired of everything. Do you ever feel like you were born for a completely different life than you’re living, Kate?”
Kate bit her lip, but nodded after a brief moment of hesitation. “I have. A lot more when I was growing up, learning the pieces of myself that I never would have thought would become so big. Like being a witch. Or - somehow, even bigger than that - being pansexual.” She winces slightly and holds her breath like she does whenever she has to say those words for the first time to someone again. “I... It’s hard. When you feel like you’re living a lie. I don’t know what exactly you’re going through, but if you need to talk, I’ve got two good ears and I’m a really good listener.”
pridefulpuff:
“Congrats. I’m glad to hear that you’re not letting the fear get the best of you. We have to be strong.”
“Agreed. It’s easy - almost too easy - to give into fear, and just... let it consume you. But that’s how the bad guys - the terrorists and murderers - win. And we just can’t let them win. We have to be strong and stand together.”
allislongbottom:
“You’re such a badass, Kate. I’m jealous.”
Kate couldn’t help but huff out a humble laugh, sounding more like an awkward guffaw. “Ah- Thanks. I mean, I try,” she fumbled, blushing and flattered. She play-punched the other girl’s shoulder. “You’re pretty bad ass too, though, so.”
