The McPike Mansion was built in 1869 by architect Lucas Pfeiffenberger for original owner Henry Guest McPike. The mansion features 11 marble fireplaces and ornate woodworking. The McPike family owned 15 acres of what was known as Lookout Park. Being a horticulturist, Henry perfected his “McPike Grape.”
The family lived in the house until 1936. The house changed hands several times since then, once being home to Browns Business College and then owned by Paul Laichinger – who rented rooms to other occupants. The house has sat abandoned since the 1950’s and has been left to ruin by weather, time and vandals. All eleven of the black marble fireplaces have been looted by thieves. The house is currently owned by Sharyn and George Luedke, who have been trying to restore the house to its original splendor. When they purchased the now 6-acre property, the roof was completely gone and there were no windows. The house is currently listed with the National Register of Historic Places.
The house is currently famous for its hauntings. Many psychics and mediums have felt and communicated with the many spirits that inhabit the site. It is a common occurrence to photograph orbs, balls of light, mists, or shadow figures; or to record disembodied voices, footsteps or doors slamming. While the ground and upper floors cannot be entered, ghost tours are conducted through the basement. Black out sessions and overnight investigations are available for booking.
Sept 10, 2016, Bill Miller of SIPI (Southern Indiana Paranormal Investigators) invited me to participate in a Meet and Greet fundraiser and to join the overnight investigation afterwards. I had been invited to a number of previous investigations of home and famous hauntings, including Waverly Hills Sanatorium.
I was asked to run my tarot reading booth on the site for the purpose of raising money as a donation to the renovation project. There were other booths present, including another psychic card reader, an author of paranormal novels, a large booth selling McPike related products, and a food vending booth offering chicken wings and hot dogs.
I spent a good portion of my morning talking to Sandy Little Lizard. She is a longtime supporter and tour guide for McPike, and has extensive knowledge of the spirits living here. She is also a very highly accomplished psychic medium, card reader, Cherokee medicine woman, shamanic practitioner, and official Cherokee pipe carrier. We spent the morning discussing spirits, readings, shamanism, death and dying, spirit communication, and healing. It was a great start to my day, as we were both able to discover someone with which we could validate and compare experiences.
Midafternoon, the speakers took center stage. Sharyn Luedke spoke about the history of the Mansion and its inhabitants. I missed this presentation, as I was engaged in a riveting conversation with Sandy at the time and dared not leave the discussion. Also, as a medium, I did not want to learn anything that might taint my observations once we began investigating. Sandy and I talked a bit about the spirits on the site, especially Mary. Mary was Henry’s wife, who had died before he moved to this location. She had three children, all who died in childhood. One particularly devastating death was her son, who had died when an application of medicine for teething was given when he was approximately 18 months old. This apparently caused his death. Mary was very deeply hurt by the death of her children and blamed herself, carrying her guilt to her own demise a few short years later.
Sandy and I discussed how Mary refuses to go into the light because she earnestly feels she does not deserve such bliss and wonder, having been responsible for the death of her children. Sandy and I agreed that her children had crossed over, but Mary refuses to out of a sense of her need to punish herself. Henry, however, has stayed behind sue to his love for Mary, and will wait until Mary has learned to forgive herself and take that final step. He is very protective of Mary, knowing her fragile state, spiritually and emotionally. When Mary has learned to forgive herself and has taken the final journey into the light, it is presumed Henry will follow shortly after.
Other speakers I missed were Zeff West of Knox Co SPIDERS Paranormal, who discussed his use of equipment during investigations, some of which he invents himself. Toni Mayhan, author of fifteen books on the paranormal and psychic development, who talked about her multiple experiences at McPike, and Tim Harte discussed his latest inventions for collecting evidence of the paranormal.
Sandy then announced to the group that we were about to start the “blackout” session. She explained that we would all go into the basement and into the wine cellar. Then the lights would be turned off. We would then be able to communicate, photograph, or even see the spirits in shadow form. She mentioned that Henry could be seen in shadow moving about the room, no matter how dark the room is. Then she provided safety instructions and hints for how to have a better experience. She, being a medium, would alert the group when spirits were present and who they would be. She asked me to sit up front with her, because I could then verify and validate what she was sensing.
The entrance to the basement or cellar was around the back, following a well-tended mulch path that encircled the house. The basement entrance was under the side porch and led to a small room that has seen its best days behind it. There was a small table set up with two computer monitors that were wired to the infrared video cameras running in the wine cellar. We were told not to enter the room to our left, containing the coal fired furnace. It was deemed too dangerous. On the other side of that room was a set of stairs that led up to what used to be the kitchen. But directly before us were the two rusty iron doors that led to the wine cellar.
We started the blackout session by extinguishing the lights and allowing our eyes to adjust to the darkness. This took a few minutes and before long we were about to detect the size and shape of the room simply by the dim lights of the infrared cameras and a small crack in the wall to the outside, which was letting in the tiniest sliver of light. Sandy then called the spirits of the house down to the basement so we could communicate with them more clearly and effectively.
I immediately felt a spirit directly to my right. Sandy and I occupied the far corner of the room, she to my right, with the lamp-stand between us. This spirit felt female, and was standing very close to my right shoulder. Sandy felt her to her left shoulder. I felt like this was Mary, due to my experience talking with Sandy in the open field outside where we spent the morning talking. During that time, I searched for Mary and felt her need to suffer for her children’s death. This same energy was near me now. My right side went ice cold; down my arm and down my leg.
Sandy announced that Henry had joined us, and his shadow was clearly seen by many of us, moving around the room. I took note, then began to try to connect with Mary. I asked her to talk to me and tell me more of her story, so we could better understand her. Of course, I did all this in thought only, as I always do. I rarely feel the need to talk out loud to spirit, as they can hear me when I talk to them telepathically. I had a hard time connecting to Mary; it seemed she did not want to talk. I mentioned this to Sandy, and she agreed that Mary is often reticent.
Just then, I felt the spirit of Henry move directly in front of me. He stood directly in front of my chair and pushed his form against me. He seemed to be telling me not to bother Mary. Henry is indeed protective of Mary as Sandy said earlier. He did not want me talking to her.
Another spirit named Jenna entered the room. I didn’t connect so well with her, despite her being a very playful and prankster personality. But Jenna also moved around the room interacting with those who would ask questions.
Several people were asking Henry questions, including his favorite color – red. I again tried to connect with Mary, as she had now moved to my left side and was very cold there. She seemed very quiet and was not wanting to say much, so I tried to connect to her to earn her trust and get her to talk to me. A second time, Henry moved directly in front of me and gave me the impression he did not want me bothering Mary. I tried to assure him I was only interested in hearing the true story and I would allow Mary to speak her peace, but Henry was very protective and overpowering.
Someone in the group asked about the children of the house. Sandy called out to the two children spirits who visit the house often. I then felt two children, one boy and one girl. I then saw a ball rolling through the room. Everyone was trying to interact with the children. They were asking questions and trying to get answers or attention. A couple of people were using their recorders to capture EVP (electronic voice phenomena) and I hope they were successful.
Just then I felt Mary say something to the effect of, “No one asked me about my children.” She felt sad and dejected, like the child who didn’t get a toy for Christmas. I tried to get Mary to elaborate on her statement, but Henry interjected again, more emphatically this time.
It was about this time that I heard someone ask Henry about his favorite book. Another person responded with, “Mark Twain.” Sandy laughed, and a few seconds later announced that Henry had said that he thought twain was ‘obnoxious.’
Nonetheless, I saw in my mind’s eye a red book. I couldn’t see the title, but I could see that the book was red, brick red. Sandy and I discussed this singular circumstance, agreeing that the color of the book was definitely brick red. I saw a gold scrolling around the outside of the cover. The center of the cover was blank, only red. I could not see any words or titles. The book did not seem to be any of Twain’s larger novels, but I could feel that it was a collections of writings. Sandy and I reflected that Twain wrote for many papers and that he commented frequently on political matters. This reinforced that we thought that this was a collection and not a novel. Sandy and I focused on this for some time, but could not see the title of the book or any other feature than it was red, about an inch or more thick and had gold scrolling around the outside of the front cover and had a blank, brick red center.
We continued to connect to the sprits in the cellar for a few more minutes, but then it was time to bring the session to a close. Once outside, I was approached by one of the ladies that was in the session with us. She showed me her phone. She had found the book on eBay for $40. She was as excited as I; and Sandy was even more excited. I instructed the woman to buy the book if she could. She told me she already had, and would donate the book to the Mansion when it comes in.
The book we “saw” during the blackout session.
For a psychic medium to receive validation like this is more reassuring than you could ever imagine. Often, the best we can do is pass along a message and hope it has purpose or meaning. In investigations like this, all we can do is vocalize our feelings and the communications we receive. But to see instantly what our intuition displays to us in real time is fascinating and reassuring.
After dinner, we went back into the cellar to perform a full EVP and video investigation. Zeff west of SPIDERS Paranormal brought a full array of electronic equipment, some invented and produced himself, with which he would capture evidence. We started the sessions with people asking questions of the spirits. We didn’t have Sandy with us, so she couldn’t call them down into the basement. I didn’t want to intervene with this process, so I remained quiet and let the guys do their work. It didn’t take long. After about the second question, the entire room heard a very heavy sigh. It came from my right hand side, where no one was sitting. This happened about four times. The two people behind me felt a shivering cold energy between them. After another couple of questions, we all clearly hear footsteps on the floor above us. The sound was unmistakable.
Bill Miller, the organizer of the event, called me into the first room of the cellar, where the monitors were. There is a small room to the left that people are not supposed to enter, for safety reasons. Zeff had set a REM POD there near the stairs at the back of the room. To get to it, one needs to walk past the large, creepy coal furnace.
The Rem Pod is a piece of electronic equipment that is designed to measure the electromagnetic field (EMF) around it. If that field is disturbed, the lights will light up. It is designed with a plastic top that glows in the dark, making it easier to find in dark, empty places with no running electricity.
From where we were in the first room, standing near the table with the camera monitors, we could clearly see into the boiler room, and the REM POD on the stairs on the far side of the room. The top was glowing as it should. But periodically, we could see the top dimming and going out entirely. At first, we thought that a shadow spirit was moving to place itself in between ourselves and the REM POD. But upon further inspection, we found this not to be the case. The light itself was dimming to nothing and then returning. Bill had just charged the top with a flashlight, so it should have had a long enough life to last until morning. Yet the top was dimming and returning to normal. We went into the room to inspect it further. While we were standing there, it seemed not to change in any way whatsoever. When we back to the other room and looked in, it was dimming and going bright again.
We investigated until 2 am, then I took a brief nap in my car. At dawn, I headed for home. Bill’s group stayed to take in the sights at Alton.
These are my experiences at The McPike Mansion. I will definitely go back again as soon as possible. And I’ll certainly keep you updated on all my experiences there.
