summary: the two of you get along like oil and water; everyone knows not to pair you two on assignments (although jean still tries all the same). so neither of you expect to be put together on this particular assignment: parenthood.
notes: enemies to lovers dynamic, reader is a fellow Knight of Favonius. i've wanted to write something like this for the longest time. this will probably end up as a longer fic later on but i felt like publishing this drabble now - i haven't written a kaeya fic in ages!

"You can't be serious."
"Oh, but what if I am?"
Kaeya smirks, idly flipping that gold coin of his. The thwack of metal against leather still sets you on edge, after all these years. Like it or not, it's a sound you have permanently associated with the man.
"Then you've got another thought coming. What makes you seriously think that I'm the right one for this task?"
The captain shrugs, finally snatching the coin out of the air and tucking it into a pocket of his unnecessarily tight pants. "The two of us, actually. Ask Jean, don't shoot the messenger."
You roll your eyes and fold your arms. "Of course I'm going to ask her, but I want to know what you think about this arrangement."
Kaeya sighs and crosses his arms over his chest. "I think we're the worst possible candidates for this."
You immediately perk up at his words and lean forward. "Exactly, so we need to tell Jean -"
He raises his hand to stop you in your tracks. "Jean is the one who chose the two of us for this."
Your jaw drops as your arms fall to your sides. "You can't be serious. Us?"
"Like I said, we're now responsible for our new guest." Motioning with his head for you to follow, Kaeya leads you to a room on the second floor of the headquarters.
Pushing the door open, heart stuck in your throat, you freeze in place when you hear a plaintive cry.
"A child?"
Wide-eyed, you whip your head around to see Kaeya, leaning against the doorframe as if he wasn't now a part of the situation. "Whose child is this?"
"Yours, now." A lilting voice from the hallway causes Kaeya to close his eyes in weary acceptance of what is to come. Soon you also spot the signature purple dress of the librarian as she enters the room.
"Lisa, you can't possibly think putting the two of us in charge of a baby is a good idea! Can't you talk to Jean about this?"
You plead with her, gesturing at the crib, but Lisa's mind once made up is not one easily swayed - especially when the decision affects her lifestyle.
"Sorry sweetie, no can do. It's either you or Jean, and she certainly does not have the time to care for an infant right now." Tapping your shoulder with her fan, Lisa smiles in a way that brooks no argument. "Good luck!"
Without turning, Lisa kicks her leg across the doorway, her heel stabbing the wooden frame right before Kaeya's eyes. He shudders, escape plan now foiled. You frown - was he trying to abandon you and the job before you even started?
"Give it your best, young father!" Lisa titters and takes her leave as abruptly as she appeared, leaving the scent of roses in her wake.
The two of you shoot each other glares across the crib. This was going to be your hardest assignment yet.

[YourName] gently laid out the blanket while Shadow placed the basket down. “I can’t believe I’m doing this..” Shadow grumbled out as he took his seat on the blanket, “Oh shut up mister grumble pants, you’re fine.” [YourName] sang out as they sat down across from Shadow.
After digging through the basket and setting everything up from little wine glasses to little porcelain plates, [YourName] made sure everything was perfect because Shadow sure wasn’t going to. “There, now you have a glass and plate and I have a glass and a plate!” [YourName] said, smiling toward their partner in crime. Shadow looked down and rolled his eyes, but to [YourName] it just meant he approved.
Soon, [YourName] started to plate the food and poured apple juice into the little wine glasses that came with the basket. “This is all childish.” Shadow states lifting the glass and gently swirling it in a circling motion, [YourName] rolls their eyes and chuckles “Well, consider me childish then.” they said smiling toward Shadow.
Shadow scoffed, but the date went on. It slightly humbled the man-made hedgehog, seeing his significant other in such a happy state- reminded him why he does this awfully embarrassing stuff. [YourName] softly hummed as they poured more apple juice for Shadow and smiled at the hedgehog.
