So, hey. That bit where Ralsei and Kris hold hands was cute, wasn't it? "What if we held hands while walking across the deadly spikes 😳". Very fluffy very wholesome.

In fact, it's so fluffy and wholesome that you almost forget that Ralsei literally just... walked through what the game defines as a solid wall. Directly in front of the player. For the 2nd time.

Needless to say this has... Implications.

I've definitely espoused this idea before, but the conversation Ralsei has with Kris in the hot spring really encapsulates just how much he knows about what's going on with them. At the very least, that he is willing to concede that there are things about their behaviour he doesn't fully understand. We can link it back to his line in Chapter 3, after being beaten by the Knight, where he'll say this:

This suggests, on some level, that he knows that Kris's motivations aren't as straightforward as they might initially appear.

But the absolute crucial thing about this entire exchange, which I feel is the strongest example of his gentleness and patience with them, is when, even when he doesn't have the whole picture, even considering how bad it COULD be, Ralsei still chooses to believe in and trust Kris to do the right thing. He doesn't admonish, he doesn't cast judgment, he doesn't moralise or transactionalise - he simply gives them space to be... Kris.

It's the most current throughline of his treatment of them from the very start of their time together, where he lets them act out, or make mistakes, and responds with as much grace and understanding as he can muster. To somebody like Kris, caught in so many different webs and designs that aren't entirely their own, Ralsei's words and behaviours towards them must feel like a sanctuary.

And if that isn't love in its purest form, then tell me... what is?

I kind of miss the impulsivity that certain spaces used to allow. oh you want a hair cut today? hairdresser in the corner can fit you in before her 2 o’clock. tattoo of a cobra… sure leg or arm? even concerts, back when you could go to the box office thirty mins before any show. not saying these things don’t exist at all, but everything feels booked five months in advance and 10x more expensive

no because it’s really really important to me that in a world where we’re so used to the heroes punching and shooting their way to victory, thunderbolts* went out of its way to show us that the void is still very much a part of bob, and bob is their friend, so they’re going to accept every facet of who he is and give him a soft place to land, even if that means they’ll have to be the ones to pull him back from the darkness every single time. because that’s what friends family will do for each other, no questions asked.
