not that i am surprised because the show that catapulted richard gadd into fame was all about the concept of the perfect victim being completely made up and harmful to the ways we deal with abuse and the aftermath of it, but i'm reeling over niall being mentally ill in ways that are not quiet and demure and palatable and getting shamed for it and told to basically man up again and again (by his own mom) and yet standing up to ruben even as he's spent over a decade going crazy with the trauma he suffered and even as ruben just picked up where he left off and assaulted him pretty much every way he could including sexually. everyone around him wants him to take it quietly so bad but he won't fit in any expected box

it's the way that ruben's abuse towards everyone else is pure rage and violence, but with niall it is always the abuse of a father. punishing niall like he's a disobedient child: clean the house, mow the lawn, show me a picture when you're done so i know you've done it well. i pay for everything you have.

on top of the emasculation and on top of the way he resorts to sexual violence every single time. it's the way he calls him son as much as he calls him brother.

AND the worst part of it is that it's the making of that bond that creates the vehicle for the violence! ruben insists that niall is family (they both do) and so he's allowed to hurt niall in the way that he learned family is allowed to hurt each other. he does love niall, and so he has to love him in the same way that he learned to be loved.

The way some people talk about Ruben and Niall’s relationship is creeping me out. Ruben has psychologically, physically and sexually abused Niall since they were teenagers and fucked Niall up so much that he’s not really able to function without Ruben to some extent. And people are talking about their scenes as hot.

That’s an abuser and his victim, there is nothing hot about it! Just because it’s two men doesn’t make it hot. If Niall was a woman, would you still find it hot?
