Thank the universe for small victories. Even though I feel like I’m falling behind this week due to personal problems, I had a small victory today. My first oral report went excellently! I was so nervous about it because I did not get to spend as much time on preparation as I wanted to. I know I can catch up with my reading quickly, so hopefully this win will give me the motivation to get through this week.

So while you’re at law school, you’re still human. And life still throws curve balls (like car problems with expensive mechanic bills). Those curve balls can lead you feeling like you’re behind financially and in your school work. It’s going to be ok (hopefully). Life happens, but ya gotta root for yourself. This also means talking to your professors if you need to.

Boy is life not the party I hoped it would be right now. Started law school online is more difficult that I thought it would be. It’s much harder to get organized when everything is spread across seven different websites. Now I know what to look out for, so hopefully things only improve.

If you need something, ask for it. If you need help, go to office hours. If you need validation, talk to your fellow. If you just need a shoulder to lean on, try your classmates. If you don’t reach out, no one will know what you need. This is something I struggle with daily. I didn’t go to office hours in undergrad. I find those interactions awkward and scary. But today I went to office hours because I was convinced I did something wrong on an ungraded assignment. Turns out, I did it almost exactly right! Even if I had been wrong, it gave me an opportunity to see how caring and helpful my Legal Writing professor was.
read your syllabus early! get a cheap planner + write out all of your due dates, maybe get a calender to visualize dates for big exams + assignments, write your assignments out as soon as you get them, make to-do lists in order of how pressing each assignment is, get a feel for how long different types of assignments take you and allot yourself enough time to get them done, rewrite your notes it will help you memorize, take frequent breaks to stretch and refuel, do not forget to move your body!!

Law school is hard. Period. Even if you feel totally confident that you know what something is, law school will prove you wrong. And that is ok! That’s exactly the reason you go to law school. You’re wrong and you learn from it. It is always important to remember that other people need to learn from being wrong too. So, even if you think you know the answer to the cold call, please don’t shout out the answer. You are taking a learning experience away from your classmate. (Also you could be wrong and that would be even more awkward).

Compared to undergrad and the year I took to finish my master’s degree, 1L year has a lot more free time. This can be overwhelming sometimes. I was used to just sitting down and studying for a long amount of time until I had something else to do. Now that I don’t have much else to do but study, I’ve employed the Pomodoro method. It’s a great way to help you focus on one task at a time and it schedules breaks for you. I use the app Focus To-Do on my laptop 👩💻. I feel like, even if I find a more effective method, my brain will at least be conditioned to change task at the sound of the bell.

Fun fact: it’s only the first week of class and I already feel like a mess. And that’s ok! The first week of classes can be overwhelming in any situation, but especially if you have never encountered this material before. What’s keeping me positive is I get to meet my BLSA mentor at the end of the week! If your school offers mentorships programs, you should sign up. Even if you don’t agree with your mentor, it’s good to have someone who has gone threw it be available to you. Also, try to get a dedicated groupme for your section or class. This can be really helpful, especially in the virtual space we are all forced into right now.

Hello! Today was my first day of law school and let me tell you, this was not how I pictured it going. I was familiar with taking Zoom classes (most of my master’s courses were virtual, but law school over zoom is a whole other ball game!). While I was super nervous for my first day of class, I only had one class to attend and the professor was super nice! Wish me luck on this first week!
