“One of Gwendolyn Brooks’s most famous poems, “We Real Cool,” was banned in schools in Mississippi and West Virginia in the 1970s for the penultimate sentence in the poem: “We / Jazz June.” The school districts banned the poem for the supposed sexual connotations of the word “jazz.” However, Brooks herself maintained that that interpretation was erroneous. As she was quoted as saying in Conversations with Gwendolyn Brooks (University Press of Mississippi, 2003): “I didn’t mean that at all. I meant that these young men would have wanted to challenge anything that was accepted by ‘proper’ people, so I thought of something that is accepted by almost everybody, and that is summertime, the month of June. So these pool players, instead of paying the customary respect to the loveliness of June—the flowers, blue sky, honeyed weather—wanted instead to derange it, to scratch their hands in it as if it were a head of hair. This is what went through my head; that is what I meant. “However, a space can be permitted for a sexual interpretation. Talking about different interpretations gives me a chance to say something I firmly believe—that poetry is for personal use. When you read a poem, you may not get out of it all that the poet put into it, but you are different from the poet. You’re different from everybody else who is going to read the poem, so you should take from it what you need. Use it personally.””

These are the people I spent the last few days with. I am feeling so inspired right now–to connect movements and struggles, to speak loudly about the injustices that are right in front of our faces (if we are willing to see them), to be outspoken, to be passionate, to pursue justice. To be radical with my love. Angela connected the state-sanctioned violence enacted against women (sexual violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, intimate partner violence) and the violence enacted against people of color. She linked it to Palestine (and talk about Rachel Corrie). So so much passion and love and giving and sharing and interconnected activism in one room. I am so amazed and blown away and empowered and what a way to end term. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow.

And I think that there is a way....I almost feel like my acceptance of a situation, people don't love the word surrender, they think of it as passive. I love the word surrender because it recognizes that thing that you're talking about, that we are largely out of control. And I think that *we think* we will gain happiness and gain a sense of power over our own lives if we try to control things in every moment. And it's really liberating to understand that we are largely out of control. And in that way, to try to then sort of catch the wave of the universe. And that for me has been this experience of coming into my own power, is understanding the power of creation, the divinity of creation, the wonder and mystery of it all, and sort of just going with it...[looking back at my life] Even these things that were very hard at the time, given distance, I could see how these things made me and opened me, continously opened me. And now as I'm sitting here, know, really confronting my mortality and thinking, everything that I've ever lost, I've gained something greater because of that loss...Folks can tend to have trouble with this way of looking at things. The reason why it has felt so good to me is it almost...how do I put this? I used to believe that difficult things were not supposed to happen. That if you had a life that was bringing daily challenges,...[the snowplow knocks down my mail box or the biggest things, you get a really scary diagnosis...I had gone through my life think these things were not supposed to happen, and that something was going wrong in my life. If anything came that was hard. Making the decision that they come on my behalf, like actually deciding that and knowing that...I know it in my cells now. It has transformed everything....the only thing we have control over is where we put our attention.....it's always really important for me to say that people come to this on their own and it also won't be for everyone [at a given time, in the midst of a certain circumstance].
