The preamble: “The COVID-19 pandemic must not be an excuse to divert investment from HIV,” said Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS. “There is a risk that the hard-earned gains of the AIDS response will be sacrificed to the fight against COVID-19, but the right to health means that no one disease should be fought at the expense of the other.” In sub-Saharan Africa (Nigeria inclusive), an estimated 25.7 million people were living with HIV and 16.4 million (64%) were taking antiretroviral therapy in 2018. Those people now risk having their treatment interrupted because HIV services are closed or are unable to supply antiretroviral therapy because of disruptions to the supply chain or because services simply become overwhelmed due to competing needs to support the COVID-19 response. “The terrible prospect of half a million more people in Africa dying of AIDS-related illnesses is like stepping back into history,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization. “We must read this as a wake-up call to countries to identify ways to sustain all vital health services. For HIV, some countries are already taking important steps, for example ensuring that people can collect bulk packs of treatment, and other essential commodities, including self-testing kits, from drop-off points, which relieves pressure on health services and the health workforce. NIGERIANS AGAIN? @guardiannigeria ... A "well-orchestrated" COVID-19-related fraud targeting multiple American states has been traced back to Nigeria, an internal US Secret Service memo said. The memo, seen by The Guardian, was reportedly sent to Secret Service's field offices across the US on Thursday, May 14. The Secret Service said the fraudsters are exploring the COVID-19 pandemic to commit "large-scale fraud against state unemployment insurance programs." A California-based cybersecurity firm Agari said on Tuesday, May 19, that "some if not all" of those who committed the fraud are part of a Nigerian fraud group Scattered Canary. Although Washington State was the primary target, evidence of the fraud was seen in North Carolina, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Oklahoma, Wyoming and Florida. To carry out the scam, the perpetrators, posing for instance as the State of Washington Unemployment Benefits Programme, sent individuals residing out-of-state Automated Clearing House (ACH) deposits in different names without connection to the account holders. The fraudsters then filed for unemployment claims in different states using Social Security Number and other personal identification information (PII) of their victims, which included first responders, government and school employees. Washington State's commissioner of the state Employment Security Department Suzi LeVine said the rush to pay the claims as quickly as possible may have left states like Washington vulnerable. The Seattle Times reported that 410 out of the 2,463-person staff of Western Washington University were targeted. Although LeVine did not say exactly how much has been lost to the suspected criminals, multiple media reports said the state may have been bled "hundreds of millions of dollars". Member Of A White Garment Church Ties Son In A Sack For 4 Days Over ‘Deliverance’ _ A woman identified as Iya Ayo, a member of a yet to be identified white garment church was arrested on Sunday, 17th of May at Fesojaye community in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, after the single mother tied up her son in a sack for four days in a bid to deliver him from evil spirit. _ Members and Pastors of some White garment churches are popularly known for adopting deliverance methods that violates human rights and the most recent of their inhumane acts was witnessed in Osogbo as Iya Ayo shoved her sacked child into her wardrobe for deliverance because he was accused of being possessed of an evil spirit after stealing a pack of biscuits. _ The woman tied up her son last Thursday until on Sunday May 16, she left the boy inside the house and went to church when a neighbour fumigating his surroundings heard him crying for help. _ The neighbor immediately alerted the leaders of the community who in turn alerted the police, the woman was arrested and her son whose hand and foot were tied before being put in a bean sack was rescued by the police on Sunday morning. _ Chairman of the community, Alfa Shakiru Gbadegesin, confirmed the incident, says the boy’s mother does not relate much with anybody in the community. _ Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Yemisi Opalola, said the woman was arrested and made to sign an undertaking never to maltreat the child. Opalola said efforts are being made to search for the father of the child so the woman can hand Ayo over to him.
