It was two, maybe closer to three in the morning. Dane hadn’t been home in a few days. The hospital had been overrun recently. He felt bad about being away, but his job allowed him to provide for his family. The only thing that truly mattered to him, although in the moment he was particularly only interested in finding something to eat. There were leftovers in the fridge, but he couldn’t be sure from when. After sniffing inside a few containers he decided on a beer and a pint of ice cream. Dinner, breakfast, whatever this was, of champions.
Sitting at the island bar now, Dane sipped his beer between over sized spoonfuls of Rocky Road. His amber eyes scanned the perimeter of the house, making mental notes of everything that still needed to be done. A big project for Spring time was the back yard and setting up a play area for the twins. In the meantime he wanted to finish the crown molding and was looking up at the ceiling in thought when he saw a light come on out of the corner of his eye.
Thank God it had been her day off. It meant she was able to spend time with her babies, her sister, she was able to get things done around the house like the laundry and tidying the nursery and her own room. She was able to relax and allow the day to just pass by. But as evening soon came over, the twins began to fuss which meant it was definitely time for their bed. Over the months since them being born, the brunette found a knack for putting them down, Madison being the easier of the two. It was one simple lullaby and she was knocked out cold, ready to be put in her crib. Dean on the other hand was much harder, demanding to be rocked and sung to, and rocked some more. She didn’t mind though as it allowed her a moment alone with the little boy. The moments she adored, even the ones that were filled with vomit and dirty diapers. Not soon after putting down her somewhat mini-me, she fell asleep moments later, in the comfy rocking chair in the corner of the nursery, while she listened to the breathing of their babies.
Unfortunately, she woke to the sound of ruffling in the kitchen with a kinked new and a somewhat sore back. Rubbing at her eyes, she looked around for a quick moment, searching for the clock that displayed the time. A quiet groan escaped her lips as she padded quietly from the nursery to the kitchen, turning on one of the hall lights, only to spot him sitting there, a beer in hand and a spoonful of ice-cream. A small smirk formed on her lips as she stepped closer, her voice soft and quiet as she spoke. “What, you didn’t think I’d want some too?” She joked, before coming to take a seat beside him. “You didn’t check the oven, did you? I left you a plate of food, but I guess it can be warmed for lunch tomorrow.” She mused, before giving the smallest of shakes to her head, allowing a quiet yawn to overtake her. “How was work?”
