did fledgling lose her chin's black patch between the flashback and present day in the most recent page or was that meant to be an open mouth for the talking?

in a similar vein , ive been sort of nursing a not entirely fleshed out theory about the psychosomatic nature of memory, fear, trauma, etc. and how the body remembers when the mind forgets being visualized with the loss of details of things in the comic, the sensation of feeling the gap without always being able to identify it, or the inverse- knowing something is there that shouldnt be but unable to place why your body reacted to it. a missing tooth that you dont remember losing but keep tonguing the gap. losing patterns visualizing losing memory, royal game escaping the borders of panels as fleeting as the memories being spoken of. its nothing super concrete yet but im definitely intruiged. i love the comic so far!

I saw the theory that "end of the world" is the end of the comic, and it's really interesting when combined with Fearsome's disappearing memories.

He doesn't remember the name of his first love? Well, that was long before the comic started, so why would he remember it? The narrative calls for there to be a first love, but that fox is not really a character as we see the current cast, more so an idea, a backstory thing. Something we, the audience, haven't seen.

I don't know if this interpretation of "the past literally didn't exist because the comic didn't exist, and that's why they can't remember it" makes perfect sense in practice but it's fun to think about.

Another theory that I have is maybe it's an old fashioned mythical ragnarök with a divine snake eating its tail and the mountain happening to reside amidst the scales on that tail rather than a planet. Who knows!

Whatever the case ends up being, I'm so fascinated by what you're doing with Ophidia! I'm locked in on reading this thing and thinking and wondering about the implications!

I am glad you're enjoying the comic! I very much want people to think about the comic and take their own ideas away from it about what's happening. I have my own ideas but I am not going to share them outside of the comic's text, and so I'm interested to see how people are approaching the story.

Idk how I’d tie that in and idk if anyone’s said it before since I’ve only been reading the comic, but anyways I love this, it’s incredibly inspiring to me the way you write and create vibes for the comic like the energy of the comic is amazing, and the energy is like. Thank you! I'm glad you've been connecting with it. Ophidia is intentionally written to capture the energy of surreal horror, and to be open to multiple interpretations. It's been fun to work on.

Updated death predictions!

My first one

-Snipsnap

I still think the old fart dies, and that his body will be full of goo. He says something foreshadow-ly that proves the end of the world is Actually Happening and not just a thing this twink says

-Whirligig

My sweet summer child. Their death will inspire Halo and Fledgeling to act. I think at some point Halo will be like "didn't I have a sibling? Where are they?" And Fledgling will. Not do well.

-Fearsome

Im not entirely sure about him being here but if he and snipsnap die that puts all the high rank pressure on Play Piper. That would bring out the worst sides of her and drive a wedge in between her and Cat

-Cat

Bold prediction here, Play Piper is the one to kill Cat. The wedge between them would get so big that they would get in a physical fight, and boom. Dead. That would be the point of no return for piper. There might also be an attempt to take over from Cat

-Royal game

Yeah idk. Either he lives or he dies before piper

-Play Piper

Dies distraught and alone. The conse-s are quence-ing

-Halo and Fledgling

The kids live! Or at least die peacefully. I hope there's a happy ending, or at least bittersweet. Maybe they just. Leave entirely. Themes are that the old way of doing things was the mountains downfall, and the kids swear to do better this time. Hope prevails, and all

rip Fearsome and Royal Game your asses would've loved Hannigram

If Ophidia was my only webcomic this would be totally accurate, but I fear I simply have not made any characters more Hannigram than these two bastards and it can't be replaced in my mind. There is definitely Something happening with Fearsome and Royal Game but it is not nearly as NBC's Hannibal as them

I like everyone acknowledging that despite the premise of the comic being "everyone is doomed", Snipsnap just has that extra flavor of doomed to him.

the way you draw expressions is fantastic. I've thought this since TDS but they've just been getting better with time, and in Ophidia they really hit. the emphasis on evoking emotion and letting your characters' faces REALLY move makes them so evocative, and at times heartwrenching. lots of people aren't willing to let their characters make extreme faces at risk of the expressions being too strong and that being unappealing, but you really let these little animals cry in an earnest way and twist their faces in shock and rage and terror. I admire that a lot! really makes me feel for the kind of emotional tailwind of their world ending, as they know it at first and more literally with time

Well thank you! I actually intentionally wanted to push the art style of this comic to be "uglier" and more similar to the artists of my current inspirations. I have had a lot of practice with animal expressions so at this point I'm very comfortable molding their faces.

ive seen a couple of theories floating around that "the end of the world" is actually the end of the comic, and that royal game knows this. i would love to add my two cents hehe

we know so far a handful of things-- that a snake will consume the world, that characters are losing their memories and even appearances, and theres some kind of dark liquid mass appearing in various creatures

id like to theorize that this dark liquid is actually ink. as the comic continues, the ink begins to run out, and with it, the characters features and thoughts go with it. unfortunately i havent quite thought of how the snake plays into all of this though unfortunately.. still, the constant imagery of gore / anatomy suggests to me that they are literally slowly deteriorating and that the world is slipping away, and i feel like them literally melting into just ink they are made of could very much tie into what that strange liquid is.

i believe the reynard/vulpes/urocyon story is going to parallel characters, but my other theory unrelated to the one above is that this story is some kind of time loop or repeating destiny. with that, i want to think the snake would be some kind of ouroboros, and that the deterioration of the world and these loops is reminiscent of the serpent slowly consuming itself until there is simply nothing left

maybe these are a little out there or far fetched, but i wanted to talk about it anyway lol. royal game you fascinate me. the panel symbolism is so good im dying to see how it plays out

While I don’t think Royal Game is going to be the direct cause of apocalypse , he is definitely going to make everyone have their last days of their life be as dreadful as they can be. He just gonna make everyone just suffer and break each other apart instead of spending their last moments together in peace. Which is honestly kinda f up like everyone is already anxious and sad about it but now you just making everyone more miserable like Fearsome who just wanted to be boyfriends with you man.

How different people respond to end of the world, indeed. Not everyone tries to make things better.

If there's one thing worse than forgetting it's forgetting but still knowing it was there… If this is why Royal Game is the way he is, he's holding up surprisingly well, all things considered.
