Fate (Das Schicksal) by Hugo Lederer at Ohlsdorf Cemetery, Hamburg, Germany [1905]

Lederer was an Austro-Hungarian-born sculptor active in Germany, best known for the Bismarck Monument in Hamburg, a commission he won in 1902 that established his reputation. This sculpture, carved from shell limestone, was completed a few years later as a private commission for the garden of the Lippert family villa on Harvesterhuder Weg in Hamburg.

The statue depicts fate personified as a female figure who drags a young man and woman behind her by their hair, an allegory of the inevitability of life and death. The house it was commissioned for was destroyed during World War II, and in 1956 the sculpture was relocated to Ohlsdorf Cemetery, the largest rural cemetery in the world, where it remains on view today.
