He generally doesn't pay much attention to strays but they always seem kinda drawn to him anyway. Even the most skittish little animals just kinda decide he's safe
Insists that taking one in is a terrible idea, mostly for the animal's sake tbh lol. Lets out a long, weary sigh like "We cannot be doing this"
Once they take it in tho he gets almost weirdly good at knowing what it wants? Like he doesn't know anything about keeping a pet prior to this but then he almost instantly becomes the one that just magically knows if it's whining because it's hungry or thirsty or needs attention or there's danger or whatever
Tech:
Tech's immediate reaction to the idea of taking in a stray is to point out every logistical issue/all the practical problems that could come up
Once they inevitably take it in anyway, he takes it upon himself to solve all of those problems. Ends up being one of the first to get obviously attached to it
Talks to animals exactly the same way he talks to people lol. No baby voice here. "You appear to be attempting to consume a hydrospanner. I would advise against that course of action."
Wrecker:
Loves pretty much every stray he meets and will interact with them if they let him, but animals can be skittish around him. To compensate he's especially gentle, will crouch down to try to make himself smaller. Tries to have food on him that he can offer
Very happy after they take one in and is pretty painstaking about taking care of it properly and also lovess playing with it. Also takes it on himself to train it
I feel like he’d love dogs and eventually ends up getting a bunch of them once settled on Pabu
Crosshair:
Outwardly acts like having an animal around is SUCH an inconvenience and complains about it all the fucking time
But...he becomes the animal's favorite person anyway. Almost instantly actually. He'll kinda half-heartedly pretend not to care but like he's not actually fooling anyone cause he softens a lot whenever he interacts with it. Sneaks it treats and lets it curl up beside him during downtime
We’ve seen how sweet he is with Batcher but I could also see him getting a cat someday tbh
Echo:
Has a soft spot for strays and tbh wishes he could help every single one of them. Softens a lot and earns nervous animals' trust really quickly because he's really patient with them
Does come off as more practical than sentimental with them though. Doesn't usually go in to pet them or anything unless they clearly want him to, is generally more focused on like seeing if they're relatively safe or have water or whatever
Honestly comes to really like having one around after they take it in and is really touched when it gets excited to see him when he comes back from missions
Rex:
Is adamant that taking in a stray is an awful idea and holds pretty firm on that for a while. Assumes that anywhere the 501st is probably isn't a good place for some little animal
Eventually agrees to "temporarily" keep it IF everyone plays their part in taking care of it, but that "temporarily" is quickly shown to be a fucking lie because he absolutely melts the first time it curls up in his lap and everyone knows in that moment that it's definitely gonna be staying lol
He's sooo gentle with it. Having this little creature that just wants to be around him is unexpectedly soothing to him and his men will often catch him just sitting quietly with it after rough missions
Wolffe:
Rolls his eyes at the idea of taking in a stray. Insists that the idea is ridiculous and tells his men that if they do take one in then he'd better not have to see it around/take care of it
Somehow always ends up with it asleep in his lap or following him around anyway. And like. Once it's in his lap he's NOT getting up. He'll sit there complaining when he could easily just lift it off but nope
Claims to only be keeping it around to “boost morale”. Yeah, his
Cody:
Practical enough to ask himself whether they can realistically care for it before letting himself get attached
Doesn't generally give strays a lot of attention but if there's a friendly one that's lingering around he'll stop to give it a lil scritch behind the ears. Has a soft spot for animals that clearly just want some company
Is really responsible if they take in a stray and becomes the one who makes sure it has a routine. He knows when it eats, when it needs attention, really anything it needs. He's not gonna take it on without giving it his full effort
Fox:
When Fox gets a few spare minutes for a break he'll go outside for some air and has gotten familiar with any strays that wander the area. Has names for them and gets worried if he doesn't see any of them for a while, but would deny that he likes them at all if questioned lol
If anyone suggests actually taking one in though he's firmly against it. Until he gets too attached to some stray that's always waiting for him on breaks and that cries when he has to go back inside. It eats at him enough that one day he's just scooping it under his arm and bringing it back to office like "ugh. fine."
Late nights when he’s up late working he honestly likes having it around to keep him company. Let’s it settle down on his lap and pets it idly as he reads through reports
Male octopus get eaten a lot while reproducing so they usually develop a survival strategy. My favorites are they're usually in a position where they can get out fast or they remove their reproductive arm and give it to the females which they can still use and honestly is more beneficial as they can use it when they find somewhere safe for eggs.
He calls you by several pet names: beloved, dearest, dearest one, and my love. Though these are mainly said in private, one might slip around Rook but that’s about it.
If you get sick, he’ll react in one of two ways. If it’s a light illness, he’ll let you manage on your own and will only step in if you ask. He knows you’re perfectly capable of taking care of yourself. However, if you’re very sick, this man is stopping what he’s doing and is taking care of you, personally. He’s making you food. Making sure you stay hydrated. And will insist on keeping you under at least two layers of blankets. Is not above providing comfort in the form of words or cuddles, if needed.
If he’s sick, though, be prepared to deal with the most stubborn sick person you have ever met. In his past, it didn’t matter if he was sick, he had objectives to fulfill. Nowadays when he’s sick, he’ll have you trying to physically move him to rest in bed, though this usually doesn’t work. Curse you cybernetic legs. However, he will concede to you providing him with a blanket and either soup or tea while he works in his study.
If you are injured, depending upon the severity, he can take care of it or one of the Mandalorians can take of it. Again, goes into caregiver mode. Makes sure you either ice or apply heat to whatever needs it. Will help with dressings.
Maul knows when you’re sad or angry. And he doesn’t need the Force to sense that. Your subtle body language and changes in how you speak are enough. Unless you are visibly upset, Maul would let you bring up the subject of what was upsetting you. But he’s always willing to listen to what troubles you. All you have to do is ask. If the problem is a particular person, Maul will ask if you want him to eliminate them. Partially joking, partially serious. Sometimes you can’t tell which one it is.
Would break at the sight of you crying. The first time you cried in front of him, he felt so awkward. He’s faced Jedi, Inquisitors, and even Sith Lords. Yet one crying significant other leaves him absolutely clueless. So he asks what you need. And you being ever understanding of his lackings when it came to relationships, ask for a hug. Alright, he could work with that.
Now though, he’s great at comforting you. Would pull you into his embrace and rub small circles into your back. Softly wipes the tears from your eyes. Would whisper words of assurance to you, placing soft kisses on your forehead.
He doesn’t often talk about his past with you. Doesn’t like to relive his trauma. You know he had brothers, but that they were gone now. Definitely won’t tell you what happened with Sidious. Maybe many years from the present, but not now.
Makes it a point to never raise his voice at you. All of his self-control goes into ensuring that. If you have an argument with him and he feels himself becoming angry, he will excuse himself and meditate to try to calm down. You are the love of his life, you don’t deserve to be treated any less.
Detests the cold and damp. It’s murder on his cybernetics and joints. When you noticed this, you actually gifted him a heated blanket. As much as he wouldn’t like to admit it, he uses it religiously when it rains or when it’s cold. You’ll find him busy at work in his study with it wrapped around his legs.
Your smile and laugh still makes his hearts flutter. Doesn’t matter how many months or years you have been together. He will never tire of seeing your smile or hearing your laugh.
Speaking of laughter, you’ve actually made him genuinely laugh several times throughout your relationship. While incredibly rare, it has happened.
If you grow your hair, Maul will eventually ask if he can touch it. He’s always been curious about hair since Zabraks don’t have any hair. He would quietly observe you as you brush and style your hair. Mesmerized at how you can transform your hair. He may even ask if he can help brush your hair. It’s soothing in a way for him. Like a zen garden. And if you teach him to braid, oh he’s going to be so focused on trying to replicate how you did. The first couple of times may be a bit loose or knotted, but it clicks after a few attempts.
you know which duo i wish we got to see more of in The Bad Batch? responsible wine mom and chaotic giant little brother. AKA Echo and Wrecker.
they did not interact in the show nearly as much as other pairs. and that makes me sad and wonder what coulda been. they’re such different people who I’m sure clash a lot and i love that about them. they balance each other out; echo is very by the books and grouchy, while wrecker is very live in the moment and cheerful. the few interactions they have in the show are so special to me. i need to and plan on writing more interactions with them in my oneshot fic.
