Controversial opinion incoming: I don't like the end of this book.
Like, this post really sums it up:
Animorphs is not that bad. Cassie's not related to anyone important, at least, and Jake's tie to Tom is mostly just inconvenient. HOWEVER. It's still canon that the Ellimist "stacked the deck" by recruiting Animorphs who are relatives of people like Eva and Elfangor and Tom, and the implication about ~*~superior genes~*~ is still in there.
To me, the reveal about Tobias being related to Elfangor:
Cheapens the message about these being ordinary kids — dumb jocks, bully magnets, screw-ups — who are literally in the wrong place at the wrong time when superheroism gets thrust upon them. Jake is my favorite because he cuts against type for SF heroes: he's not an outsider nerd, he's not talented; he's just some dumb jock who is also kind and brave and optimistic. Giving Tobias the classic SF backstory makes him less relatable, in my book.
Undercuts Tobias's friendship with Ax. Along with the backlash to "they're such good friends they must be in love", I'd like to start a backlash against "they're such good friends they must be related." Because it's still implying that some types of love are more valid than others. The shorms are family before they find out they share genes; do we really need that added element?
Undercuts Tobias's own call to action in the first book. Tobias makes this instant connection with a stranger from another species, in a way that Jake notes only Tobias could ever do, and it ends up pulling all five human kids into the war. There's heartbreaking power to the idea that Tobias is this overflowing with empathy and also naïveté. But whoops, nope, turns out it was a genetic connection all along!
Straight up doesn't make sense? It's a rare case where Animorphs' otherwise pretty good continuity slips up big time — Loren's three husbands, Chapman's contagious amnesia, both Tobias's parents going from "dead" to "missing", Ax's childhood suddenly being illogical. There are so many ret-con gymnastics going on that this twist doesn't feel worth it.
Loses the realism. Animorphs has my love forever for details like Marco not being able to afford admission to the Gardens and Ax fighting tears at the thought of disappointing his dad and Rachel having to be the second parent to her sisters. Tobias having a dogshit home life, just because, and using morphing as a desperate escape hatch — that's realism. That feels perfectly in line with the themes of the series. It feels like things I saw as a kid that no adult, and no other kids' book series, would talk about. Tobias having a dogshit home life because his dad's an alien prince who got time-warped off to fight a cosmic war while his mom was attacked by his dad's ancient enemies and given fantasy!amnesia because of her former role as the first human ever to be mind-controlled... Fuck off. If I wanted fantasy escapism, I'd read a different book.

To be fair, id argue Tobias being Elfangor's son (beyond them seeming to have some connection when they meet) doesn't really make HIM anymore special or fanatastical as a person. Its not like his alien heritage gives him some special powers and he stil lived his life on Earth as an avaerage kid, magical space reasons or not, his life DID still suck for reasons outside his control. Though I would argue that hits on an an issue I might find more with this twist nowadays: It....doesnt really MATTER?
Like, "Tobias is Elfangors son" feels like a twist that could be done in Animorphs (honestly, they couldve just had him leave either by choice or Andalites coming to Earth to bring him back and Lorens memory just erased by Andalite tech, thus hitting on those themes of war and duty and the Andalites kinds sucking.) But him being Elfanors son doesn't really change anything. Tobias's stories are still more about him being a hawk or being with Rachel. Even his relationship with Ax feels like it should....change more considering Tobias is his nephew. Heck, maybe it'd even be cool to see what the Andalite's as whole think on that. Like, what ARE the Andalite rules for interapecies breeding while in morph? Feels like something that should come up. Hell, how does Tobias feel about Elfangor now, since he has to ASSUME his father abandoned him and his mom to go fight the Yeerks? Resentful? Angry? Hurt? Tobias being Elfangor's son isn't really something that changes anything like it should. I'd even argue Marco's mom being Visser one has more effect because it drastically changes how Marco considers his mission in the war and his motivation.
Like, the twist itself doesnt bother me, its more how it feels like it SHOULD really change more for Tobias in SOME personal way.
No, you're right, and to me that's an extra frustration. I think it'd bother me less if it ended up being setup for a plotline where Tobias communicated with the andalites somehow, or it mattered to, like, the war-prince they negotiate the treaty with in #54. But it's basically just a weird little fun fact for the rest of the series.
And yes, all the other family connections pretty much get a pass from me as well. Tom's role is mostly 'surprise, kid; you thought you could ignore the war but it turns out there's already a yeerk living inside your home." And even when that yeerk does become important for the war effort, it becomes important because of Jake -- it steals the morphing cube and gets a giant promotion by holding Jake's family hostage against him. So that connection isn't coincidence. Ax is similar -- he was the only aristh on his Dome ship because he's Elfangor's little brother, not out of luck.
As you said, Eva and Marco feels more coincidental, but even then you can argue that Marco is an Animorph because of Eva. And it's a major plot point that Marco wants Visser One in particular dead. Just like it's a major plot point that Visser Seventeen* wants Jake in particular dead, just like it's a major plot point that Elfangor's death requires Ax to kill Visser Three.
All this space opera crap with Tobias is just... there. It's never important to the story that Tobias is half andalite, other than being another reason (besides everything we already got with Loren) for Elfangor to love Earth and trust humans. And even then, Elfangor says outright in #23 that he neither knows nor feels attached to Tobias. So it's basically just space opera nonsense.
*Visser Seventeen = the yeerk that controls Tom from #6 - #54, and ends up head of invasion security for the Empire. Whose name we never learn. And who might in fact be several yeerks.
Weird headcanon: The letter says Tobias is Elfangor's son, but is there any actual evidence that's true? Elfangor wasn't there when Tobias was born, he only thinks Tobias is his son because the Ellimist told him so, right? The same Ellimist who sent the letter in the first place? Do we as a fandom consider the Ellimist a trustworthy source now?
I would 100% no questions asked become a voluntary controller ASAP as soon as i realized they were invading earth. Not only that, but I'd take it as life insurance. They're going to kill EVERYONE except hosts? YES PLEASE SIGN ME UP
And another thing: That yeerk would have me fixed up so fast. I genuinely think that ANYONE else could manage my life better than I am currently doing.

Maaaan, you're like so perfectly demonstrating why the Sharing's cult model works so well. And all the other cult models for that matter. You get thrown into a society that demands that you "excel" somehow through money-making, baby-making, meaning-making... and then gives you no tools for doing so. And then treats you like dirt for not hitting those bars, and blames you for it.
But the Sharing says that you don't have to feel like that anymore, because they've found a way out. A yeerk can take everything away from you, and can do something "better" (certainly more violent, anyway) with it than you ever could. And like, obviously the Sharing is a lightly re-skinned Scientology, but this is why the yeerks are going after people who are lonely or homeless or mentally ill — they know that an offer of control will seem like a mixed blessing rather than a curse.
I've never personally felt that temptation — for me, the bad mental health days have me wanting to pull a Chris McCandless (giving away all my possessions and going off to die in the woods) because the brain demons think that's how I can best help the world. But when the meds are calibrated and the sun is shining and the grief of it all is at bay, I have time to understand that that's unhelpful and to arm myself for the next time those fuckers come out of the mental woodwork.
All of which is a way of saying: self-annihilation is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. And the problem with yeerks isn't mind-control or privacy or someone else wiping your ass when you poop. It's that they bully "consent" out of you, and then once you give it, never ever let you take it back.

I think Mick thinks Nina's just a super geek having geek dates with Fabian. Everyone else are just spying and trying to get them together. The LARP thing is just one of those dating things they do. Kinda like Degrassi's Anya and Sev.
House Of Anubis: How the OG DutchBelgium show was butchered by its English Adaptation Part 3: Appie & Jeroen
Because part 1 and 2 were well received and I recently got questions for future parts, I hereby decided to finally make part 3!
This one will tackle Jeroen and Appie, known as Jerome and Alfie in the English adaptation.
First of all, let's start with the second lovable himbo of the cast and one of the primary comedic relief characters, Appie. His character is one of the most obvious cases of the English adaptation neglecting storylines from the OG as well as one you could see how different they were going to be from their OG couterpart from the get-go.
For one, because the first OG actor for Appie quit playing in Het Huis Anubis as he wanted to pursue acting school and work on his craft, they had this plotline of him changing race due to it. I knew the storyline was clearly going to be dropped when I first laid eyes on his English counterpart, but aside from that I want to point out that any main character like Nina could have stayed on the show by making her change actress. This plotline's removal is where my stance on all the changes to Fabian especially as I discussed in part 1 stemming from homophobia towards Fabian's OG actor comes from, because a plotline to keep his love interest and have her remain as the leader is right here. No, Nickelodeon wanted a male heroic lead and I can see right through the bullshit.
In regards to his OG actors, Appie's first actor was Moroccan and his second was black like Alfie and there is of course the third actor from the final movie which served as an epilogue to the series really. Where Appie got cursed and flickered between being his black self and being white, as someone who changed race twice was an ideal sacrifice to this cult so they were trying to raceswap Appie again so he could be their sacrifice. This is also the movie where Appie gets together with Amber at long last. Their relationship is so different in the OG, like it goes from a slow-burn to becoming endgame at the very last adventure and giving all the shippers their moment to rejoice.
Also, small fun fact but the first actor, Achmed Akkabi, became one of those rare teen actors who blew up in a kid's show that actually retained a succesful career as an actor. He's arguably amongst the biggest Dutch millenial actors there is as he's one of the few I can actually name that I recall seeing in recent promoted projects such as Mocro Maffia (note to foreigners: Mocro is Dutch slang, originally stems from them copying the Dutch version of the 'N' word to mean a Moroccan gangster instead as they kind of fill that role in gang as well as rapper culture over here that black people seem to do in the US).
He has never been in a love triangle with Jeroen either.
Speaking off the drama the English remake invented in the OG, Jerome being a cheater is too OOC to function. Jeroen literally was a faithful boy in the OG. First, there was Mara but she left after S1. Then in her place, another girl was quickly introduced, Noa who was secretly an Egyptian princess hunted down by a cult. Jeroen loved that girl. He was ready to betray friends and foe, double cross people in what realistically should be an internationally active cult, all just to protect her. The way he fought for Noa and would do anything to keep her safe, that Jeroen being a cheater?! Get out of here! Jeroen was a bad boy, but he was faithful as fuck. Jeroen and Noa were literally the 'bad boy & good girl' trope taken to the next level, and I love the ship (though I have nothing against Maya and her ship with Jeroen. Liliana De Vries is a gorgeous woman, like the OG cast consisted out of so many attractive people I was just a mess as a kid over this show okay).
Jeroen was an icon of an iconic IP, with his catch phrases and overall snarky attitude he was deeply beloved. To this day I low-key wonder if I roast people for being incompetent so often was influenced by Jeroen calling everyone failures all the time. Like the OG was that big to definitely influence the kids swept up in the Sibuna craze and when rewatching the OG all I can say is whenever I watch this guy, 'Alright, I can understand where that trait of mine might stem from'.
Also, shout out to Sven and Achmed's chemistry. They were low-key shippable, which combined with Appie crossdressing once or twice as a joke, makes me feel like Nickelodeon invented the Willow stuff too because Appie and Jeroen were a surprisingly popular ship.

After 7 months, I finally finished my Sentai mega-marathon: from Gorenger to Go-Busters! Now I’ve watched ALL the 41 Sentai shows (and I’m continuing Lupin/Patranger). Next will be Akibaranger. Here is my personal ranking, from the one I disliked the most to the one I loved the most.

future headcanon: Nina after graduation started writing her sibuna adventures. They quickly became a children’s book series. (obviously for reasons of privacy she changed the names) the books soon became bestsellers, and then had a film adaptation. The films have also been successful, despite the complaints of book-loving purists, but with hype for the saga, many theories have also been born, including the one in which the events told are real.
A huge bang littered the surrounding area. The crash blew the yard around her. But the girl felt nothing out of the ordinary. Pain was her constant companion in life. All due to her degenerative disease and failing cybernetics. So. Forcing herself up, proved no different than usual. She brushed herself off.
A minor trip from the sun to the moon then to earth hurts. Gravity's quite a pain. Seriously. But hey. Her kingstone devoured to the suit to fix her injuries. Her eighth cousin's previous work handcrafted into cybernetics. Thus created a more appropriate rider form for the Century King, Shadow Moon. Now. She can enjoy the ability to fight evil like the rest of her family.
The formerly frail 6 year old smiled. She felt herself rocketing up into the air as joy filled her body. Her brown hair swaying in the air as she met the sky. Sure her distant cousin, Sumiko, might have a heart attack... but hey. Her cybernetics appeared fixed... well more stable than last time. She could move her arms all the way without feeling any pain now. In fact, the strange parts utilized in fixing her molded well into her body alongside her new cybernetics created by the cannibalized suit, her natural cybernetics and mutation. The mutation inherited from her great grandfather. And she has the new rider form to enjoy. Whatever the man did, fixed her enough to grant her an actual rider form. "Yes!! I'm fixed!! I'm fixed! I'm fixed! I finally have a true blue rider form! YES!!"
In gratitude she turns to the very confused strange brown haired man. His face scrunched up to analyze her. Everything he knew felt challenged by the pale, brown eyed, wavy long brown haired child. There's strange metal in her body along with other non human parts based off grasshoppers, grasshopper like insects and locust. Parts of her look decrepit at best. She never had an Agito seed, yet she had some grongi genetic information along with some lords and other creatures. Her bloodline had definitely had his touch from the time of Amneris. That he definitely could tell. She had access to an imperfect rider form. One she used a stolen suit cobbled together to compensate for. The newcomer bowed in gratitude, while her words reach sonic speed. "Thankyou! Thankyou!! Thankyou!"
He did not respond. But the girl read his thoughts. "I never did properly introduced myself."
"What bad manners you have, Nina." The girl, Nina, berated herself in a strange imitation of a gruff, older man. Possibly one of her relatives, judging by the tone. She bowed. "Good evening. My name is Nina Martin. Please take good care of me."
"... hm..." He almost laughed, but held it in. Out of all of these people, she made a note to introduce herself because she considered it bad manners. Something to berate herself for. Interesting. "I see."
"I... I want to thank you for fixing my body. I honestly thought my degenerative disease would kill my chance to live up to my family." She informed him. He smiled, "You chose to fight despite dying?"
"YES!" She responded bluntly without a second thought. A human willing to sacrifice it all. It painfully reminded him of Kamen Rider Gill. "There's more to you than meets the eye."
"Great granddaughter of Diane Martin. We even share the same middle name!" The young girl gushed on one of her famous relatives. She almost heard Sumiko facepalm. The genius always refrained from mentioning her eighth cousin once removed. Sumiko's third cousin literally helped make the weapons to fight the Unidentified Lifeforms. ... while crushing on Kaoru Ichijo, but hey. Nina didn't complain. The man's success speaks for itself. A model cop if the brunette American ever met one. Sumiko prefers success through her own merits not those of her family. Hence her preference in refraining from mentioning them to others.
The leader of the Lords didn't understand the significance. Another human hero, he assumed. The other cops look at her in shock. They knew who she was. Battle Fever mentioned by one. Another points out a Sokichi Banba, someone their direct commander, Sumiko, really disliked as remarked by the other. He can hear some mild cursing from the ear piece. Nina might been told not to reveal that fact about herself. Humans are fascinating creatures.
The girl twisted herself to the right with her arms, crunching her fists. She places her left arm right with her hand open like she's ready for a karate chop. Then her right arm to the left the same way. She slowly moves her hand clockwise. When it reaches to her shoulders, she swished both hands to her right, her right arm fully extended while her left is forms a capital l in front of her body. She proudly stated the word she wished to say for all her life. "Henshin!"
The power she felt intensified as her kingstone bearing belt bears visible. With a flash her true mutated form appears before her body completely covered by her more bulky armor than the 80s Shadow Moon. Silver in body with blue vest like middle instead of the silver and black of the original. The Gorgom symbol for Shadow Moon plastered on the left side. The black replaced with all Silver instead with blue shorts with blue stretching down to her thighs instead of the black bottom. The rest is silver. Her blue boots remind the cops of the boots worn by bōsōzoku gang members. Her red bug like eyes replace the green eyes. Her helmet also bore bigger eyes while her head matched the original if only the bottom was blue and sharper mouth. The two horns also few centimeters longer. Her grasshopper features matched the original if only more buffed thanks to the extra armor. The sleak, thin silver appendages wrap onto each part of her body. Her hands held blue motocycle gloves like covering over them than her predecessor's more gauntlet like version. Her weapon appeared to be a black, thick metal spear with a large green tip
The third cop's pants filled with water marks. Babbling he's to cute to die as the other two roll their eyes. G3's hand impacted the unit's face when the third cop imitated a headless chicken, cursing, start ranting about killer moons. The gruffer one mumbling harshly under his breath, "I need a pay raise from dealing with these idiots. Kami-sama. I cannot believe I left the army for this."
The man promptly faints in a sea of urine. The Overlord watch the scene before him in pure bafflement. What the hell was that? He turns to the new rider who introduced herself.
"I'm the child of the moon, Kamen Rider Silver!" The new rider exclaimed. The Overlord turned to the other cops confused. The lead cop in Rider Armor notes. "It's like Kamen Rider Black RX only the moon."
"Oh." There's other riders not bound by the Agito seed. He thought as the G3 operator paused. He turned to her. "The moon?"
The girl annoyed, responds sharply. "Yes."
"Why would that be important?" The Overlord asks. He missed alot over the years it seems. Gruffier, muscled one responds equally coldly implying history with figure. "Gorgom's Shadow Moon. Real bastard of a creature. Piece of shit wouldn't go down."
"Uh. Hello. I'm stopping the villains here!! Honestly!" The girl fumed, stopping the ground in anger. The poor leader of the Lords stared as the child finally acts her age. "..."
"Shadow Moon?" The girl looked at the guy calling himself the Overlord. She informed him, "He's dead. Kamen Rider Black too. Lots of history. But both now have proper successors, born on a solar eclipse as expected of them."
Something her distant cousin failed to understand. The Kingstones tend to be peculiar in temperament. There's something charming about it. It really makes each transformation special. The girl thought. Though Sumiko eschews the idea of mysticism especially when it comes to some of her relatives powers alongside cybernetics. Poor Sumiko needs to accept the reality of our family's legacy. Like or not. Cybernetics is part of it.
Nina couldn't understand why the poor cop cannot accept cybernetics. It's part of the family. Besides, she made some that's currently inside her six year old cousin. For my babysitter, Sumiko-san sure knows how to keep a girl happy. Still she needs to accept chan as a suffix. I'm family. She then bowed. "I'm rather new. But prepare yourself."
He flicks his wrist. This send her back. She brushes herself off. She watches as the soldiers fire at him. This allows her to sneak behind him. A quick Rider Punch meeting his fist. He knocks her down despite missing her face by three kilometer. This caused her to demorph as she fell on her butt. He smiled. "Cute."
"Not bad for such a beginner. I can see you have quite a good future my little advocate." He mysteriously told her. She turned her head. "What?"
"You know what I mean. It's in your heart, body, mind, and soul." He left in a flash. The cops surround her. The G3 operator, Mikoto Hikawa, frowned. He felt his heart beat once more. "Do you have any idea what you did?"
"I took pieces of the unfinished G4 unit, the broken G2 unit, the prototype version of G3 before Sumiko-san fixed it to create your version and some of the scapped ideas. Molded it into one armor. Casually went into battle with said untested armor. Got shoved into the sun which bloody hurt by the way. Missed the Earth on my escape and crashed into the moon. That also hurt. Thank everything for cybernetics, huh?"
The man rolled his eyes. No one I know is such an odd duck than Sumiko-san's cousin. Though I feel she's not telling us everything. She happily stood by to take notes on their operations. The sole reason why her family sent her here in the first place to understand police work. But resented not going into the thick of things. The fact she had gun training scared him. Constantly running into things or fiddled with things she thought could help. She even performed communications unprompted to help. Ultimately creating her makeshift, untested armor... which she wore in her rush to fight the Leader of the Lords. How she found him is anyone's guess. Fought valiantly despite everything, but ended up in the sun. This completely vaporized said armor without killing her. Hell. She survived the trip to space without any damage. If she said is true. The impact of her on the moon should have killed her. Yet, it didn't. Invoking the cybernetics as the reason of her survival. Cybernetics, her go to excuse on why she's alive despite everything. He seen her medical records. The girl won't make it past 16 if things continue the way they are. She can't even act her age half the time. The make shift armor showed up in that new form of hers. One invoking the image of that terrorist from the 80s. Hell. She even refers to herself as a child of the moon and mentions that Black and Shadow Moon have heirs. "Born appropriately" on a solar eclipse no less. Yet. Despite her apparent status as Shadow Moon's heir, she's obsessed with doing the right thing and wants to fight Gorgom much like Kamen Rider Black. To the point she's willing to die for it despite her illness. It was nice how she took things seriously despite her preference in writing, history, archeology and egyptology. But her cowboy cop attitude definitely needed curbing. She's lucky she's not dead yet. ... Sumiko-san'll kill us if she died. ... I almost got killed. He pressed his hand to his heart imitating a heart attack a his gruffer partner originally from the army laughed. "You're killing me!"
"I got so much moonlight, it's not even funny. I now have a rider form! I totally can help now!!" She went on. Her Kingstone loved the moonlight. That's probably helped unlock her true rider form. The cobbled up armor helped too. Tony Stark, eat your hurt out. The two blink. The gruffer one looked at her. Slightly bashed her head with a playful tap. "Kid. Nice of you to help. But leave the back up for someone who can at least touch the pedals of a car."
The American born girl stuck her tongue out. She cried out, "Honestly. I want to help!"
"I know, Nina-san. But let's not do it by rushing in. Our boss would kill us if you die out here. Let alone the commander in chief. " Mikoto informed her, rubbing his forehead. He liked her, but man did she prove the adage about Americans at times. Shiro Mizuki laughed. "Your cousin got a mean right hook."
"Well. Duh. Fighting the enemies of justice is a family creed! She learned how to fight like the rest of us." She exclaims pumping a fist in the air. She helps the two place towels all over the yellow lake. The two call in reserves to ... help pick up the unconscious cop.
The brown haired female cop rushes out of the car. Her brown eyes gazing into Nina's brown eyes harshly. Pinching the younger girl's cheeks, she screams, "You dumb brat!! Do you have any idea what nearly happened to you?"
"A moonbath?" Her six year old cousin cheekily. She receives much more force this time. She mumbled an apology. "I. I just wanted to help!"
"Help?! You could have died!!" The other roared. She looked at the poor girl's face. She kneels to get even to her size. "Nina, your six years old! Leave this to the professionals, okay."
"Then what good am I?" The small girl inquires bitterly, tears falling from her face. Sumiko sighed. "Nina. You're not a disgrace."
She rubs the girl's head. Smoothly, she informed her, "You did good trying to distract the guy from the targets. We managed to save some lives. The various Unknown managed to fight off the other Unknown while you distracted their leader. This allowed us to save multiple people."
The cop hugged her cousin. "You're not a failure."
An army officer walks up. She glances at the girl, thinking. Sumiko continues to walk her cousin to the car unaware of the woman's thoughts on future plans.
my friend (who is a cis female) asked me today to stop using the word “girlie” to address her sometimes because she said it made her “ears all crunkly” and so I said no problem obviously
So i just want to take a second to give you a friendly reminder that gender dysphoria is not just experienced by trans/nonbinary/anyone and everyone else under the genderqueer umbrella! Cis people feel gender dysphoria too and thats okay! :)
