The Foo Fighters' new record is due out in early November, and to celebrate the making of it the band teamed up with HBO to make the new series, Sonic Highways. The show premiered tonight, and featured an incredible first episode. The recording of the album took place at different studios, with different guest musicians, and happened all over the country, which makes this a musician and audio engineers dream show to watch. Sonic Highways (also the name of the album) will be an eight episode show, produced by Dave Grohl himself. The show has the band visiting a bunch of different cities all across the map and points out musicians from these towns, filled to the brim with musical history. In an interview with Billboard magazine, Grohl describes the show: "It’s basically the history of American music broken down to the cultural roots of each place: Why did Chicago become a blues capital? Why did country go to Nashville? Why did the first psychedelic band, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, come from Austin? How did the second line rhythm make its way to New Orleans? It’s crazy." If Grohl producing the show and being in the band wasn't enough, he also handled the booking and interviewing of guests! I don't want to give too much away, but even in the first episode there is loads of gear for engineers to drool over. The first episode focuses on Chicago, and features folks like Buddy Guy, Steve Albini, and many more. Grohl believes after 20 years there has to be a new way to get a feel for the cities you're playing in, and that that'll influence the way a song is created, recorded and mixed. If this first episode, and new single also released today, is any indication of the album to come, then we're in for a real treat. If anything, it'll really get you excited about music, culture, and storytelling. Check out the show's page here.
