(Note: This is a volunteer position, not a paying job although living expenses will be subsidized.)

I must admit I don’t understand how you have to pay to volunteer :/ Though it likely provides much needed money for the charity/program, it also greatly limits the people who can “volunteer” at the program. I’ve love to go work in-situ and actually help out, but I do not have the money to drop into something which is only a stop gap position (though probably very valuable in terms of life experience and CV padding).

There are no fees for Long Term Volunteers. They just need to be sure they can afford to support themselves for six months - OFI helps to arrange a home-stay, but the money for rent and food is given directly to the local family). In addition to transportation and visas, OFI does require that volunteers have medical insurance and a variety of vaccinations and health tests, which are most volunteers' main expenses after rent.

For the Short Term programs, OFI does collect a fee. Short Term volunteers come to Borneo for 2wks at a time, generally don't speak any Indonesian, and need a bit more assistance. The fees that the Short Term volunteers pay cover their food, lodging, transportation, and (a good chunk of) the supplies and equipment for the project they're working on (building a boardwalk, a bridge, etc). 

Some organizations use volunteer programs as a way to raise funds. OFI doesn't. We selectively chose a small number of skilled, passionate individuals whom we believe can make a difference at our field operations.

Indonesia's children see ravaged environment in their future

A generation ago, Borneo was one of the wildest places on the planet. But decades of logging and oil palm plantations has changed the landscape of Borneo forever: in fact a recent study found that the island has lost 30 percent of its total forest cover since 1973. In the face of this large-scale environmental destruction, a new study finds that Indonesian Borneo's children have a pessimistic view of their future.

Indonesia cracks down on illegal burning, investigates more suspect companies

Every year, thousands of hectares of Indonesian forest are illegally burned by development companies. However, Indonesia’s Minister of Environment, Balthasar Kambuaya, is optimistic that legal charges over such fires can be completed – even though he has just three months left in office.

The OFI Long Term Volunteer Program offers individuals a rare opportunity to travel abroad and witness firsthand the impact and realities of wildlife and habitat protection, by working at OFI’s Orangutan Care Center in Pasir Panjang, Kalimantan. The OFI Long Term Volunteer is an unpaid position designed to increase OFI’s impact and to offer participants a unique insider experience. Orangutan Foundation International protects 6,000 wild orangutans in Tanjung Puting National Park, in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Facilities include the Orangutan Care Center, which rehabilitates 330 young orangutans and prepares them for return to the wild, 16 guard posts throughout the park and numerous staffed feeding stations. Volunteering for OFI can have a big impact — on your life and the lives of the thousands of orangutans we fight to protect. Each year, OFI is grateful to receive many kind inquiries from volunteers willing to spend weeks, months, even years in Kalimantan, helping in the Orangutan Care Center or in Tanjung Puting National Park.
