Conradyn Cunaeus (Dutch, 1828–1895), "Allegorical Depiction of Loyalty and Love" (detail)
1928 "Mesanges" bracelet by Rene Lalique. From Frederick Sidney Cook, FB.
A french one a friend sent me, we send each other pictures of doors for.... reasons.
The direct translation is "door out of use" and "just like us all", but the french word for "out of use" also means "doomed". So it would be something like "door doomed, just like us all".
Official ominous sign
Hunger Drones: Season One - Start!
After breakfast and a few moments of rest from Fractal's introduction to everyone, a buzzer sounded throughout the facility as the many Contestants were summarily ushered into what looked like repurposed shipping crates, just big enough for one drone to fit. Once the door closed behind you, a screen on the inside blazed to life as Fractal could be seen smiling as brightly as ever.
"Allllright everyone, I know breakfast was a little rushed and hectic, so I'll go over the rules again while explaining it to the Beneficiaries!~"
Your container lurches forward with the sound of scraping metal and grinding gears, Fractal pulling out a clipboard from within her jacket with a lower arm while an upper one holds her oddly designed mask to the side.
"Rule One - The Rule of One! The game ends when there is only one or none of you left alive, with that Contestant being the official Season One winner of Hunger Drones. How you get to that point is up to you- Forge alliances, go solo, whatever it takes!~"
Fractal begins to walk with the camera as she heads to a platform of some kind, standing on it while continuing to speak.
"Rule Two - No Leaving! Any attempts to flee past the borders of the arena will result in premature death via the core devices and/or arena systems put in place. Remember, the enforced borders are there for more than just for you!~"
Your container stops suddenly, almost throwing you right against the screen before starting to raise up along with the hostess's platform.
"Rule Three - Patience! When your container is open, do not step onto the arena floor until I give the go ahead. Failure to follow this rule will likely involve your untimely destruction via arena defenses!~"
Although her platform continued to rise, yours had just stopped as the grinding noises ceased as a buzzer rang out and the walls of your container fell apart. It seemed to look like you were moved to a large and wrecked lobby of some kind, the welcome sign for 'Cabin Fever Labs' hanging on a hook from the tiled ceiling as a large crate sat in the middle of the floor. You could see the others as well, all arriving in their own transports in a circle a few meters away from the supplies.
"Rule Four - Limited Outside Intervention! While your Beneficiaries are able to help at various times, they are only permitted to send what is requested of them. Any violation of this will result in the removal of all Beneficiaries associated with the Contestant~."
Fractal's platform finally stops with a hiss as she takes a seat in an ergonomic office chair, the wheels rolling her off camera for a moment before a hand grabs it to record herself at a control console of some kind, many different switches and buttons with differing labels, her mask set gently on the top of it while the clipboard was tossed to the side.
"I hope everyone's excited, because I know I am! I'll finish setting up the arena proper and I'll let you know when we can start with a classic countdown sequence. In the meantime, get a hold of your surroundings! It might be helpful~"
The screens then switch off, leaving you to yourself for the time being.

After a brief goodbye, Pinson had gone into the crate.
This was real. Truly real.
As he listened to the rules, his mind was racing. So Pinson began thinking of how one like Espoir survived Neo Arcadia, and how to obey but be invisible.
So he waited at his crate. Wait until told to move.
"Allllright, I hope I didn't keep you all waiting for too long! The games start in three! Two! One!~"
Just as suddenly as Fractal appeared on-screen, the red countdown had commenced and ended with the security alarm going off, apparently having it strung up as a makeshift horn of sorts for inside the arena blares.
Hunger Drones Season One was officially underway!
"Well... Not bad, I guess..." Pinson's mind raced, and he thought of Espoir's own survival.
Move deliberately, quietly, lay low.

Raven Girl / Connectome, Royal Ballet (2013)
(StalemateAU)
Faun had found a plastic pumpkin, rolling it around and chirruping at it. He was playing! Actually playing!
Cyn would catch him, all floofed up, kicking the pumpkin around.
"I didn't know you enjoy plastic pumpkins this much, Faun!"
As Cyn emerges from the shadows to greet the Sapphire Drone, her appearance seems to have changed: A faux white flower coming from the top of her head and little red booties on each centipedal leg of hers... Oh man, that's a lot of booties-
"Happy Halloween~"
Faun jumped, before looking alittle embarrassed. "Ah... It was just fun to roll around."
Murder Dromes Headcanon- The 'Dumpster Pets'
I thought about the pasts of J, N, and V, namely their past jobs before being discarded and then found by Tessa.
J: Tessa obtained her first, likely as a birthday gift. J was once a loyal Corporate Drone that did everything right. This did not save her when the company swapped all current Corporate Drones to get new ones. Like PCs, these Drones were refurbished for general sale. J's personality somehow remained with little change. Tessa chose J, and then began customizing and modding her. Overall, James Elliot humored this as hey, his kid was turning 12 and outgrowing dolls, right? It's a phase, RIGHT?
N: N was found at the dump, where Tessa was likely going with J to find parts. N's past job was being a nanny/caretaker of young children. N's soft nature and playful traits made him a beloved friend to the child(ren) he looked after. Was he perfect? No. However his gentleness and Golden Retriever mindset made him a treasured playmate. He was discarded after his playmates grew up and sent away to school. Tessa found him and revived him, delighted that despite his memory loss, his personality remained! Hope J likes a companion (she doesn't).
V: Found around the same time as N, V was a Domestic Servant Drone that was kept for housekeeping. However, V was discarded due to episodic, frustration-based aggression to other Drones (but never humans). This frustration was mostly from a visual sensor glitch (corrected when Tessa made her glasses). Upon revival, V's personality was skittish, nervous, and timid. She feared becoming aggressive again because she remembers her discarding. N became close to V, even helping her manage negative feelings. V was used by Cyn as a guinea pig for her Solver experiments.
Cyn: I am unsure of Cyn's origins. She may have had a motor glitch that meant she wobbled and was unable to properly work. She was discarded and then found by Tessa. Cyn was in the worst condition and took far more time to rebuild. With vulnerable software and weak 'health', Solver was easily able to take root and mutate her AI.
