Girls Keep Out: Female Video Gamers Face MISREPRESENTATION and CO-OPTION
should i do some goddammned feminist literary criticism on this piece of shit wikipedia article or work on my game?
Oh, apparently, Iâll be raging about an unwarranted, bandwagon AP article from someone who didnât get to go to Chicago this week.
Iâd like to be a productive human someday, not triggered all the time by these bloatfly harpies invading my safe spaces...
for linkâs sake, GAMING?
No one has a clue how many microagressions Iâve suffered at the hands of mean girls, and well-meaning girls over my âgrossâ habit of gaming,Â
and now yaâll want IN? i call bullshit... you just want to throw mud at a âboyâs clubâ you ainât good enough to be in.
of course, back then was a different era, an era when parents were marketed gaming systems as an alternative for their boys to âshopping,â something women used to be good at through practice. (you should know, once upon a time, there was no wal-mart...)
Parents approved of the expense because it was a much less costly hobby than skateboarding, if one factors in medical bills. The boys could happily take risks, risk-free, and also probably gang-free.
Also, it actually improved their boysâ attention spans, an increasingly important, and new, requirement for men in the âSpace Age,â as opposed to more labor-oriented occupations for men previously.
Girls were still required to do the same thing, however; be compassionate and social, gather the best provisions, fluff the nest. None of those things are improved by sitting in front of a CRT for hours working on pixely perfection. So, society tried to âhelpâ me stay away from all that nerdy stuff, for my own good. By whatever means necessary, in some instances. Have I been clear that no-fucking-body LET me play video games, yet I played them, however I could, for hours a day.
No, the boys didnât let me have a turn on Mario. I had to wait until they rage-quit or tired of the system, sneak in to their rooms, surreptitiously memorizing warp codes.
No, my parents laughed at me when I begged for an atari, pointing out that I could just share the commodore with my (now systems-manager) brother. PC, and by that i mean, personal computer, not politically correct, wasnât in their vocabulary. I traded doing his chores for time on Test Drive.
No, I didnât whore for items, like so many girls and fake girls did on Everquest and World of Warcraft. As anyone knows who plays MMORPGs, most female characters are played by men, and I simply played the game, allowing my gender to go unnoticed. If I began a personal relationship with a fellow player, I might tell that person my real gender, or not, and occasionally, myself and another female might have been playing together for months without considering whether any âdonglesâ might be involved.
And, No, currently, when interacting with females in the real world, I am reticent to bring up my passion, because at best, I get a polite blank stare, and at worst, they begin to gush about candy crush. But seriously, I face much more massive social pressure from adult women to âstay out of games,â than any x-box tough guy could muster.
In these many years of gaming, I have encountered a million men, and my invariable experience is similar to that in the real world. When âgamersâ or âmenâ or whatever you want to call us,believe they are un-invaded by judgmental, prudish, censoring âbitches,â or whatever you want to call them. they are free to make fart jokes.
And, when âhoesâ (owywtct, unverified) show up, they get showered with admiration, praise, items, and PLing. These silly âfemaleâ lamers tease awkward boys mercilessly, defrauding them of real time and money spent on in-game or real-life items, sometimes leading them to believe a real-life relationship has developed, and then accuse them of stalking. Men online are vulnerable and victim to sexual and emotional abuse by women constantly, and a few men (or women? who is to say?) probably did make insensitive comments from the arrow-slots of anonymity toward over-sensitive squishies.
AND THIS MEANS IâM NOT WELCOME IN GAMING, HOW?
NO ONE is welcome in gaming.
no one LETS you game.
no one CARES in gaming, so get your social circle elsewhere
(and they are, but they have to bitch like an ex.)
You let your team down, they are gonna hate (YOU, you dick-cheese, donkey-punched, useless, know-nothing, kill-yourself, fat, grey, wanker twat stick simian... you.)
You get S-class. No one else gets that for you.
You lead a guy on, heâs gonna be confused.
You donât have to check a gender when you join a guild, folks. Â
Have you skin-less goons even ever played a game?
real games destroy you, sans gender,
and then you get-the-fuck-back-up
and try again.
In gaming everybody gets PWNED! And then...
Stop the hate. stop the butthurt. stop the censorship. Â
