Happy Pride everyone
Iāve moved!
For the sake of convenience (and being able to directly follow you guys instead of having to send anons with my @), Iāve moved to a new blog. Iāll be taking some time to get things in order but expect me to be more active again and soon!
My new blog so I can actually follow you guys back and not be a mysterious anon!
Dust, Dust Everywhere
The shack was more or less in shambles. The front door was missing with the screen door hanging by a hinge as it clacks against the frame with any wind strong enough for it. Dust covers the floor visible from the outside and the windows all had their blinds and curtains drawn. The sign, once mounted, had been dislodged and fallen away to reveal its outline that had been worn there from many storms and nights.Ā āOrlandoā it said but some of the letters had rotten in particularly poor weather to leave it asĀ ārandā.
Inside, a phone can be heard ringing with an old bell tone. It was near constant and simply had no delays between failed calls. Even with power long cut and bills left unpaid it simply would not stop ringing. There was a chill in the air here and a storm was coming in...
A Phone Call
āIs there anybody out there?...ā The phone dangles from its hook, static just audible behind the voice.Ā āHello? Is there anybody...ā

He gave a nod but now felt a bit out of his league. āKeeps growing back? Sounds recursiveā¦ā His speciality was cleaning up the mess of others and not exactly understanding what caused it but working in Gravity Falls had sent him more than a few peculiar jobs where picking up on things was essentially unavoidable. āAnd if itās coming back thicker each time⦠think itās a wood spirit? Something vengeful?ā That was effectively the extent of his offering of explanations here, the handyman pulling a small set of shears from his waist to test the garden.
With a snipping of a branch he simply watched the spot closely. To his surprise the spot grew back visibly, albeit slowly, but then he couldnāt help but squint around him. āI think⦠It all grows, no matter how much of it is cut back.ā That branch definitely was not this low before.
His attention then turned to the fountain to give it a look over. āCan you sense anything? Err⦠is that how it works, sensing things?ā
āI canāt⦠I canāt sense anything specific,ā Abbie explained haltingly. āUnless itās really strong. Then youād be able to feel it too.ā Abbie had no innate magic of her own, not that she knew of. Unless there was something that you needed to activate the tedious, ruin-based spells and barriers she set up. All she had working for her was a lot of previous experience, some powerful friends, an unhealthy sense of curiosity, and an acquired taste for adrenaline. (More a survival mechanism than a personality trait.)
āItās more like a gut feeling but thatās just, you know. SubconsciousĀ observation stuff I think. The air feels different, something like that.ā One didnāt even need much of her experience here, to tell something was off. It would take more effort to deny there was something supernatural going on. Every inch, every leaf of this place was steeped in energy so thick it made her hair stand on end.
āBut. I can set up spells that will tell me about whatās going on. And hopefully get rid of it.ā Abbie made her way to the crumbling fountain and brushed her fingers against it. There was a feeling, like a current, like she had placed her hand inĀ Kellās river, of something rushing past. She snatched her hand back like it had been burnt.
āIāve met wood spirits.ā Abbie twisted her hands, trying to rub away the feeling and taking deep breaths.Ā āThis is stronger.ā It gave her the same⦠chaotic, ancient feeling as Obscura had. Abbie didnāt scare easily, perhaps not the best thing for her health, but that demon had kept her up shivering and alone, hidden under her bed.
Orlando was, suffice it to say, pretty unnerved. Normally the messes he had to deal with were already inert or just dead bodies - the amount of body sized blood stains he had cleaned up could be counted on two hands where one finger was normally too much - but this was above and beyond his normal work.
"The lady that hired us... Did we ever get a name? Or an address?" He cast the snipped branch to the garden floor. He had intended to turn back to his partner in labor when suddenly he sprang back, shears held as if a weapon. "Watch your feet! Trimmings move!"
As promised the little branch, once dropped, had begun wriggling where it fell. For a brief moment it seemed almost ready to start on some path but it ran out of whatever energy that had sustained it, the thing partly burrowing into the ground before falling still.

He gave a nod, testing the pockets of his vest with idle, yet practiced hands. he probably fiddled with his pockets a lot. āIām basically like this always. Canāt afford a secretary and messes donāt stop because Iām off the clock. I fall asleep at my desk pretty often.ā
He was seemingly in a chipper mood, even if a bit confused for the job, but as they made their way back the garden became a bit too thick for such a neighborhood and the trees a bit too menacing. Rubbing more sleep from his eyes he couldnāt help but explore a bit visually. āFor a rich neighborhood, this garden seems a bit⦠untamed,ā he commented, tugging up his flashlight for the darkening road ahead. āAnd⦠goes further back than I thought it would. Is that a fountain? Whoād have a fountain in a garden like this?ā
Abbie frowned up at Orlando.Ā āBut you can respond to them in the morning.ā Still, she focused her attention on the job. Carefully, but steadily, she navigated the tangled grass. The bushesĀ were thorny snarls of branches.Ā
āYeah.ā Abbie stopped, a good foot or two away from the fountain.Ā āI⦠I donāt like it. The fountain.ā She twisted her hands. In general, gardens were best a bit natural, in her opinion. But the lady whoād hired them insisted that no matter what she did, it all grew back. Darker and thicker than before.āI tried to set up some containment spells around it but they all failed. Iām going to have to remove the actual spell. She wants you to have a go at the garden, I think.ā
Whatever this magic was, it was powerful, and Abbie found herself reluctant to touch it. But she was pretty good at curse breaking. And thatās what this was, certainly. A curse.
If only she could figure out how it got there.Ā

Despite working with her - and on a few occasions for her - he was always pleasantly surprised to see Abbie, his eyes lighting up somewhat. āOh, hey there, bud.ā
He dug his hand into the nape of his neck and gave a shrug at the talk about the job. āJust been waiting here, really. Figured that if the lady thought I needed to know she would tell me.ā Despite another yawn chasing his replh he really looked about like he always did for work. Stepping to the side he gave a nod. āC'mon, letās get this over with so we can get back to watching the phone, yeah?ā
Abbieās face softened at the affectionate name, and that shiny, for-business look faded a little. Some frustration leaked into her voice. This was⦠hard and a little scary, even, and it had been a while since a job had given her so much trouble.Ā
āThat⦠that would be nice.ā She rubbed her temples.Ā āShe left a couple hours ago. I set up some wards but. Here.ā She started making her way slowly to the back, glancing at Orlando to make sure he was with her.Ā āYou alright? You seem kind of tired.ā

Orlando had been given the call and a place to show up but not quite told who heād be working with. Perhaps it slipped the womanās mind? Perhaps she didnāt view it as important? Didnāt really matter in the end as he showed up in his every-purpose set, a tool vest jurry rigged to carry cleaning tools of varying normality, some very strange and with unknown origins - even to him (especially to him) - but usually he made use of the bulk of his vest on these āno questionsā jobs.
He was standing by his van with a flashlight on his waist and his fleece lined jacket on his shoulder. It wasnāt too cold just yet but the later it got, no doubt it would get cooler. āSo,ā he hummed, āwhoām I with this time?ā He checked his watch and gave a yawn. Probably another long night, but he was used to it at this point.
Abbie caught sight of the van first. She was hunched over, doing something with the ground on her hands and knees. When she saw the broad-shouldered man, she stumbled to her feet and half-jogged over, waving.
āHey, Orlando,ā she greeted. Business as usual: it was not the first time their paths had crossed on a job. It had been nearly a year since they first met, she noted. Abbie was still holding that same, beat-up, cast-iron pan that she tossed around like a weapon, silly as it was. But she also had two knives on her belt (silver) and a good amount of spell supplies in her backpack.
She looked sweet as ever. She smiled at Orlando, gestured to the path leading to the back of the house.Ā āI came here earlier today with Ms. Obrien but I needed to go back to get some more stuff. Theā¦ā Her smile wavered, the only hint that it wasnāt quite genuine.Ā
āYou should probably just see it yourself. What do you know so far?ā

It was on the wealthier side of town, and that was what made it strange.
Odd things happened, sure. They happened everywhere. But they liked to keep it hush-hush on the north side of town, where the houses were tall and white and the gardens so manicured they gave her the willies. For things to go so strange that Abbie heard about it, that meant somethingĀ for sure.Ā An odd noise or two around where she lived was expected. It was almost stranger when too long went by without her hearing a haunting song floating through the woods, without her seeing strange lights in odd colors floating through the garden and vanishing. But up there⦠it just wasnāt talked about.
So when a lady with fur around her shoulders and too many rings had walked into the bookshop, asking about setting up protective wards, glancing at the door and keeping her head down, Abbie had volunteered to go set them up herself. Because it was clearly something. And she wanted to know what.
Admittedly, the money didnāt hurt either.
