hi hello my name is oscar and this is my main blog

i'll mostly use this blog to link to all my other blogs (that I feel like sharing) so that if i follow someone, they can find the blog i would have wanted to follow them from if that makes sense? e.g. if i follow a helpol blog to be mutuals, they can follow MY helpol blog rather than this one.

honestly, i think i'm going to remake my blog

i sort of gravitated away from the Helpol community a while ago, some people may have noticed my lack of activity here. moving houses has really drained my energy and motivation to worship, but that's only really a small part of it

now, the bigger issue: the ableism i've faced here is frankly... disgusting. i know there's ableism everywhere but jesus christ this community is just sad. dont even get me started on the elitism and general rudeness

i'm still a Helpol, i might mention it occasionally when i redo my blog, but i don't like this community anymore. i'll probably be steering well clear from blogs heavily associated with Helpol unless we're friends

i don't know what i'm going to do yet but i think i'll keep all my more popular content and delete the stuff that got a few notes only

anyways. that's pretty much all i wanted to say, so... yeah. have a good one

and i found this little patch of ripped paint from the blutack, except it was under another poster and it wasn’t new, like it didnt rip off right as i pulled the covering poster off? except i dont know how it would’ve gotten there because it was under one of my first posters. ive literally never moved this poster, and it wasn’t there when i put the poster up

worshipping Apollon (and about to worship Achilles) have made me realise it’s okay to be pretty and feminine if you’re a man

i’m a trans guy and often feel like shit because i’m still very fem-presenting (not in a financial or supportive place to transition in any way)

and like, Apollon is literally labelled the most beautiful god. so it’s okay that i’m not hyper-masculine

same with Achilles who pretended to be a woman to avoid being sent to war. it’s like i’m pretending to be a woman to avoid having to face my family’s judgement

idk. that’s just my thoughts. of course, there’s Aphrodite, and I am starting to worship her, but it doesn’t quite feel the same. probably because i’m not a woman and Aphrodite is

but yeah. little yappathon, my bad, but every day i seem to find new reasons to love Apollon (and Achilles)

not to mention both of them have had same-sex relationships like my boyfriend and i. i view Apollon as one of the patrons of lgbt boys and men

some helpol reminders

(from a mostly revivalist perspective)

• candles aren’t reliable for divination. don’t use candles for divination. please at least try to get a pendulum or something if you want to do divination. candles are just too easily influenced.

• no, the gods aren’t mad at you (unless you killed someone or burned down a temple). just because your candle flickered doesnt mean theyre mad. just because they didn’t answer your prayer right away doesnt mean theyre mad.

• the gods CAN reach out to you. it happens to a lot of us. on the other hand, you don’t have to wait for a god to reach out. worship whoever the hell you want.

• you don’t need an altar. you could just have an empty space you dedicate to praying in and that would be fine. also, you don’t need a BIG altar. it could be a mint box or something and that would be fine.

• you’re allowed to eat offerings. if you’re not in a position where you can waste food, just eat the offerings. not everyone is privileged enough to burn or bury all their offerings and in fact the ancients often ate parts of their offerings too

• the myths aren’t meant to be taken literally, but rather metaphorically. don’t disregard them entirely but don’t treat the gods like their myths literally happened and theres physical proof of them happening

• anything can be a devotional act. having a glass of water could be a devotional act.

• offerings dont need to be big or exquisite or expensive. grab a flower from your backyard or something. offerings dont even have to be physical (re; devotional acts).

• it’s okay if you struggle to find information about the religion. not everyone has access to them and it’s privileged to think everyone has to read ten books on the subject (while that would be nice, we need to be gentle with those who struggle to do research on their own).

• gatekeeping isnt okay. it doesn’t matter where someone learned about the religion, they should be welcomed and treated with respect.

• same goes for age, ethnicity, and previous religion if they had one. young polytheists shouldnt be shamed. people who aren’t greek CAN be a helpol (this even happened in the ancient times, generally as long as you could speak greek you could take part in rituals, no matter your ethnicity).

• you don’t have to take part in every single holiday/festival/etc. you could just take part in those for the gods you worship. also, it doesnt have to be complicated. you could just take some time to pray to the gods the holiday is for/about.

remember, your practice is yours. it can be as complicated or as easy as you’d like it to be. don’t let people on the internet dictate your practice.

(but if someone is trying to educate you on a topic you may have gotten wrong, please at least humour them. it’s rude to outright say “No I don’t care”, especially if the topic is regarding actual ancient history)

i have a pretty big altar right now but i’m so excited to get a place of my own where i can really splurge on my altar. being a teen helpol can be so limited, but i’m definitely one of the lucky ones whose family isnt religious and whose family IS super oblivious to altars

but i think if i had my own place, i’d have a lot more. i’d finally put a picture in the picture frame, i’d have more candles, more crystals…

although i think i equate my own place to my own money, which influences this line of thought

Okay, so I don't mean to be disrespectful, but, as a baby helpol, I get so many intrusive/impulsive thoughts while I pray or in general.

Like I'm praying to Aphrodite and Poseidon at the sea and suddenly I remember all the times I peed in the ocean when I was a kid, or I'm just walking around and suddenly the Greek mythology/Greek mythology based media fanfics I wrote (most of them probably disrespectful) before I got into the religion. And I'm like... "Fuck, would they be mad?"

Firstly:

Secondly: intrusive thoughts are unfortunately just a part of life, and I think people with mental health issues are particularly susceptible to them (not accusing you or anything, just a statement).

The gods understand that we’re mortals. We have flaws, that’s what makes us human. No one can be perfect, and no one can control their thoughts, especially intrusive ones.

I completely understand that it’s uncomfortable to think that way, I get thoughts like that too. I think a LOT of helpols have experienced this at least once.

I know it might seem dismissive of me to say, but they’re just thoughts. Thought crimes don’t exist, thoughts cannot hurt or impact anyone other than yourself. However, if you let yourself act on intrusive thoughts, that’s when it can become bad. Actions can hurt others, thoughts cannot.

TLDR; you can control your actions but not your thoughts. Thought crimes don’t exist. The gods understand we can’t control our thoughts, and they wouldn’t be upset because we thought something about them.

Also, some (if not most) helpols are of the belief that the gods are not omnipresent. They don’t/can’t hear everyone’s thoughts all the time, unlike what Abrahamic religions tend to believe their god can do. The Greek gods respond to direct calls for them, but they do not inhabit our minds all the time, they don’t watch us all the time, they don’t monitor our thoughts to decide if we go to Tarturus or not. Our actions are what decides our character, not thoughts. No one can know what we’re thinking unless we tell them.

I promise the gods are not and will not be mad at thoughts. Thoughts are harmless.

i think a lot of people in helpolblr don’t understand syncretisation.

theres so much talk about “helios is the sun and apollon is the sunlight!” and “apollon isnt the sun god!”

helios and apollon were actually syncretised during the roman period. also there can be multiple gods of one aspect?

anyways apollon can be a sun god or he can be a light god, both are valid ways to see him.

while helios will always be the personification of the sun itself, he and apollon are both gods of the sun.

please please please research syncretisation guys. it’s a huge aspect in a lot of religions and helps us understand the gods in the way they were understood in the ancient times.

same goes for artemis and selene.
