So I was listening to my friend finish ZA last night and they got to the final battle with Urbain and I cannot stop thinking about it actually

Because I see so many people complain about how the rival just wanted to take the spotlight from you and be the hero and get the glory but like

They just didn’t want you to have to die man

Imagine hearing what Naveen said on the rooftop—that the members of Team MZ could die because of AZ’s mistake. Imagine dedicating your life, or at least your time in Lumiose, to helping people because people helped you, and you’ve come to love the city and its people because of that. Imagine hearing that your friend—one of your closest friends—is going into the most dangerous spot when they’re a tourist who didn’t ask to get caught up in any of this.

Imagine seeing them win, and hearing Naveen’s words again—that they could die, because Urbain wasn’t strong enough to stop them.

Urbain knew the risk, and he knew he didn’t want his friend dying for something they didn’t even ask for. He’d rather be the one to die because at least he has ties to the city, he has ties to the disaster with Ange, and he doesn’t want his friend to get killed because of something they didn’t ask for.

And the only way he can stop them—and the inevitable guilt of letting them go up there when he’s Team MZ’s leader and the one who should be sacrificing himself—is by insisting harder than they do. Even if it means he looks like a jerk in the process

The reveal that Urbain's (and Taunie's) mother was a member of Team Flare raises so many questions about their character and motivations which I'm hoping the DLC will answer.

I have no doubt they genuinely have a strong desire to help others, but I can't help but wonder if at least a portion of that desire is also because they may wish to atone, for lack of better wording, in their mother's place.

Or perhaps it's also possible Urbain and Taunie fear facing the consequences of their mother's actions, similarly to how Grisham and Griselle became involved with Team Flare due to their own parents and are looked upon negatively by some. Building up a good reputation may better shield them from judgment if the truth were to ever become public knowledge.

Regardless, I can't say I've ever been so invested in the canonical characterization of the opposite gendered protagonist (technically, since Urbain and Taunie are palette swaps of Paxton and Harmony respectively) before.

Thinking about how good it would have been if the game had just explicitly said "Floette likes the rival better and that's why they get to go with her to try and shut off Ange"

Something something Floette was revived against her will at the cost of thousands of other lives, and now 3000 years later with another crisis, she gets to choose who she wants by her side to try and prevent it.

Something something Floette is a war veteran with one of the strongest fairy type moves in the series and was probably sent to war BECAUSE of her strength and when she gets to choose she doesn't choose the strongest trainer she chooses her friend who's been trying to make her home a vibrant place with lots of guests.

Something something Floette gained a mega evolution because of the Ultimate Weapon that made her flower so powerful it acts on its own and she can't control it but at least she gets to choose who's by her side when things go to shit.

The point is for once it is her choice

What’s funny is that people see Urbain’s “I should be the one to be up on that tower” as “I’m petty and want to be the main character” but I see it as “I should be the one in danger and die for the city, not my friend who’s just a tourist.”
