“Conjuguant anormalité et anomie, le terrain vague est donc l’anti-espace public. C’est une manifestation parmi d’autres d’une crise de la ville industrielle, qui est aussi une crise de la ville bourgeoise. L’espace public devrait être le corrélat de l’espace privé et de la matérialisation de l’idéal politique de la “cité” moderne. Cet idéal est constamment invoqué pour masquer les structures conflictuelles inscrites dans le développement urbain, mais il résiste mal aux faits. Le terrain vague est l’un de ces faits. Il est même devenu, sur fond de légende métropolitaine, une figure exemplaire des dysfonctionnements de la normalisation et du contrôle qui s’exercent sur l’espace urbain. Cette figure correspond aux valeurs et aux conventions anarchisantes de la contre-culture des années soixante aujourd’hui largement institutionnalisée.”
