It is funny how shit happens. I was at my friendās clothing boutique in Brooklyn. Williamsburg, Brooklyn that is. I was born and raised there. Ā The shop owner, Carlos, has an entrepreneur mind and puts it to good use. Pays his bills, networks, promotes and continues to earn a living with a hustlerās mentality. Him and I were chatting when this young buck, White kid, 20-years-old ā I was told ā waltz in looking like a hipster or beach bumā¦ same shit. Carlos introduces me to the kid. I say hi. I didnāt say whatās up or wuts up or yo! I said hi. Carlos tells him that Iām a writer, which Iāve been doing for the past four-years for magazines, newspapers and blogs. I even wrote an article on Carlos. The kidās eyes popped open and said if I can write an essay for his girl friend. Heāll pay me $100. The essay was part of a graduate application process that is supposed to state why do you want to be in this graduate program. The administration doesnāt even grade applicants for the essay. They just want to know why youāre interested. I know this because I was accepted to a masterās program. But hey, who am I to judge somebody offering me $100. āSureā I said. Iāve done this before for White kids during my undergraduate.
Ā The kid, Mike, gets my number and I his. Tells me to follow him on Instagram. āSureā I said but I donāt. Mike text me the PharmCASās (Pharmacy College Application Service) information on the essay. āNo Plagiarismā the PharmCAS instruction says. I thought that was funny and still do. Because here are these two privileged White kids ā their mommies and daddies are paying for their college education ā as they scam the system, while I had to work full time to pay for my night school classes. So I wrote the essay even though I had no idea what pharmacists do other than legally sell drugs written on a prescription by a doctor.
Ā I wrote the essay and sent it. Apparently White Mike's girlfriend didnāt like it and said ā according to White Mike ā it wasnāt personal enough. Girl, I donāt know you! I donāt know what classes youāve taken. I donāt know where you worked and what you did at work. I donāt even know your name. But fine. Here is a story of an imaginaryā¦ ummmā¦ grandfather that you love very much. And with four hours of research and writing I wrote her essay, again.
Ā White Mike text me that she, his girlfriend, is not going to use my essay. She had somebody else write her essay. It's amazing that this girl is focused on not doing the work herself. Makes you think what kind of pharmacist she'll be, if she makes it out of school. But hey, at least I learned what a pharmacist does. White Mike text me what the other person supposedly wrote for his girlfriend. Why did he do that? I donāt know why that kid did that.
