I've never paid particular attention to movie soundtracks, beyond "oh this sounds cool", but I re-listened to parts of the phm soundtrack just now on my commute and I was this close to crying at 7:42 in the morning in a train full of sleepy people ą²„ā āæā ą²„
Started with "A Moment" and let me tell you I Had A Moment. It's one of my favourite scenes in the movie, I cried in the movie theater both times. The reverent swell of the music, the awe, the emotion. You can pinpoint to a millisecond when the Petrovascope turns on and Grace is bathed in glittering red light.
The choir devastates me, I've always been very moved by choirs and this line from the composer kept running on loop in my mind: "the choir is humankind. The whole of humanity is with Grace, cheering him on". Oh my Godddddd

Then I kinda skipped through to "Time Go Fishing" and it lures you in with a cheeky lil fast-paced intro, yay, adventure! And then it cranks it up and never lets go. I felt like I was hunted for sport the entire time. 7 minutes of relentless tension with barely two seconds to take a desperate gulp of air and it plunges you right back in. My heartbeat was probably up in the 90s. Even towards the end, where it gets those hopeful swells of the orchestra, yes, they're breaking orbit, they'll make it out: you can hear the grating sound of sirens underneath it all. They're not in the clear they just don't know it yet.
"Excessive Centrifugal Force" continues the beloved tradition of constructing around you like a boa and now id adds the crunchiest most discordant strings that go wwwwEEEeieiwww so your bones, too, can feel them spinning out of control. It's a jackhammer of desperation and wrongness. Unlike its cousin, it's only 1:32 min long, but it manages to sound like if hyperventilating was a movie score.
After this deluge of sound, you'd think "Rocky Sacrifice" and its slow and tender vocals will bring you relief ...SIKE. It's utterly devastating. It sounds like an eulogy, like a dirge. Rocky's choice almost certainly will doom one species to death, if not both, but he has to try. The sound reminds me of this contradictory feeling you get when you are running on pure adrenaline: you're both in a haze and everything is a bit subdued yet you have crystal clarity on what needs to be done.
The visuals that go with it of course are pure pain. Grace looks so peaceful, passed out and crushed against the panel. Almost like he's sleeping, face lax, and oh boy if Rocky doesn't have massive trauma around colleagues looking like they're asleep but actively dying *chewing on drywall*

i dunno if this is the opposite of gifted kid burnout where you've been told you're not as intelligent as the people around you and so you consistently keep trying to measure up to everyone and study hard and give of yourself until theres nothing left except that bitter realisation that you will always never be enough
