What can I say? To me not much can compare with the striking blue-green hue of the 1997 pocket of exceptional aquamarine from Medina, Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Those few ‘glassy gemmy’ crystals spared from the waiting gem cutters wheel have almost ‘legendary’ status. The ‘sea-green’ colour defines the ‘variety’ name, but plays havoc with the light appearing both greenish and blue alongside a clarity that’s presents an aura that is hard to define but easy to see. This one a perfect example; long prismatic doubly-terminated crystal showing beautiful etch figures, growth hillocks and fantastic dual tapered terminations which was so indicative of the find. As you turn there is an almost concentration of colour at the ends, and the exceptional limpidity of the crystal is easy to see just oozing ‘quality’. Only one of a dozen or so crystals from this famous find, numerous people consider it the finest aquamarine known for its size. Thanks to Gail and Jim Spann (collection) for letting me escape with this one for a while, just awesome 👍🏻
