I don't think I really miss any of them anymore. Those relationships ended a long time ago and I've had the time that I needed to process everything and move on.

He knew he could be a charmer, so he usually added some humor to his lines. He ran a hand through his hair, before massaging her hips softly. Once he finished with those he got off her back, staying on his knees next to her on the bed. “You can turn over now.”

“I know that you’re right, it’s just easier said than done. I always prioritise my classes and my grades over everything else”, Arden admitted. “Don’t ever change, Grant. You really are a breath of fresh air”, she said, laughing softly. When Grant had finished, she carefully rolled over so that she was lying on her back; leaving a lot more of her body exposed to him.

“I’m sure you’re still more mentally put together than I am,” Este admitted, shaking her head. “Man, you just had to fall for someone who’s about as emotionally vocal as a rock, didn’t you?” she teased, flashing Arden a grin. “Sounds like a plan. I would ask you to talk to Skylar, but since we already know how she feels you don’t have to.”

“That’s because you don’t give yourself nearly enough credit and you give me way too much”, Arden insisted. “Are you really surprised? You should just be proud that I haven’t fallen for someone that’s ghosted me”, she pointed out. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m really happy for you but I’m also a little envious that you know where you stand with Sky and I still have no real clue when it comes to Liam”.

“I guess you have a point.” She chuckled. “The hayrides are a nightmare because I’m not tall enough to climb up onto the seat by myself. But everyone else seems to have a good time on it, if you were planning on spending tickets there.” Inez sighed. “Everyone seems to be saying that. Maybe I’ll do something unexpected, then. Like kiss him. That’s pretty straightforward, right?”

“That’s because I’m very wise”, Arden quipped. “The hay ride is cute but I think I’ll be spending my tickets on the scarier rides”, she told Inez. “That’s because his level of obliviousness is noticeable to anyone that spends more than five minutes with him”, she teased. “That’s definitely straightforward and even Nate wouldn’t be able to misinterpret it”.

“You were just using my friendship for spooky halloween rides?” Ivy asked, chuckling softly and giving Arden a nudge. “I feel that. I definitely used to be able to handle dairy when I was a kid.”

“That’s exactly it. I was starting to think that I had wasted my time by befriending you so I’m glad that the investment is finally paying off”, Arden joked. “I guess that’s another downside to adulthood”.

Grant smiled at Arden, leaning on her door frame to keep from swaying. He thought he was playing it cool, like he wasn’t drunk as a skunk. “Arden, baby.” he grinned again. “Ooh, snacks!” he said excitedly, standing up straight, completely losing his train of thought of flirting with the woman in front of him. He walked into her room slowly, still teetering around quite a bit, before finding a chair and sitting in it. “Does this spin?” he asked, before spinning in the rolling chair. “Weeeeeee!”

If there had been any doubts about Grant’s level of intoxication, those quickly went out the window as she saw how excited that he got over the promise of snacks. She couldn’t help but laugh as he wobbled his way over to her desk chair and started spinning around in it. “Given how much I’m assuming you’ve had to drink tonight, I think the desk chair is probably a bad idea right now. I refuse to clean up your vomit”, Arden informed him. “Why don’t you take the couch or the bed? I’ll grab you something to eat”.

Confused, Alix gave Arden a puzzled look as he adjusted the sleeve of his jacket. He looked down at his clothes—black slacks and a button up were the uniform requirement. Definitely not meant to swim in—before looking back up at her and letting out an unsure laugh. “I can swim perfectly fine but I’m not exactly wearing swimable clothing.” A sane person probably would have taken this as the perfect excuse not to go. After all, it was late and, again, any sane person probably wouldn’t accept an offer from someone they barely knew like this. Alix, on the other hand, was more than curious about where this—where she would lead him.

“Don’t worry, I wasn’t expecting you to swim in your work uniform”, Arden laughed. “You wanted to do something a little bold, right? I’m presuming you’re wearing boxers or something, just swim in those. I’m planning on swimming in what I’ve got underneath this dress”, she told him as she started to lead them in the direction of the Monarch University swimming precinct. It didn’t take them long to get there, Arden letting them both inside with the key that she always carried with her. “This place is so much better after hours”.

Takes no guy bullshit. Female boss. Check.” She did a tick in the air. “I mean, Alfie got me in to a playboy bunny outfit if that’s anything to go by but everything’s casual.”

“Trust me, it’s worth the effort. He’s one of the best people I know”, Arden said, a fond smile on her face as she spoke about her friend. “That’s me to a tee. You should see me in a power suit”, she laughed. “Oh my god, please stop talking. I do not want to know how my brother managed to get you into a playboy bunny outfit”, she groaned.

“I can’t blame you. I mean that’s the very reason I ended up in the army.” Esme confessed. “I have to say I much prefer the sorority house to there so I don’t blame you for loving it too.” She added. “From everything I’ve seen so far, it’s a good fit for what I needed.”

“Wow, I didn’t realise that you were in the army. What was that like?” Arden asked, more than a little curious. She wouldn’t have guessed that a stint in the army was part of Esmeralda’s background. “I’m really glad to hear that because we feel very lucky to have you”.

“Yeah, I could tell that the Halloween carnival wasn’t really your thing. You were a trooper though”, Arden said with a smile before thanking Sky for the coffee. “I’m great, how are you?”

“I really don’t know why I tolerate this shit from you”, Arden said with a dramatic sigh. “Wait, is Esmeralda your ex?” she asked, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion as she tried to put the pieces together. Based on some of the comments that Esmeralda had made at the after party, it seemed like she and Alfie knew each other quite intimately.

“sorry A, i just want to turn in something good even if it is entirely my fault that i procrastinated” she huffed, slumping down into her stool as she continued to scroll through the pictures. “thank you for doing this for me arden, genuinely, i don’t think anyone else’s model’s are going to be even half as hot as you” she assured, turning her camera around to show off one of the shots that was one of her favorites from the day. “are you doing anything after this? i kind of want to go get ice cream or something—i don’t know i feel like i deserve to treat myself to something after surviving midterms” 

“It’s okay, I get it. That’s why we’ll be here as long as it takes, I know what it’s like to want to turn into the perfect piece of work”, Arden assured her best friend. “I’ve already agreed to model for you, you don’t have to try and butter me up now”, she teased in response to Vedette’s compliment. “That’s really good, I think your lecturer is going to love your work”. Vedette really was incredibly talented. “My whole afternoon is free because I wasn’t sure how much time you’d need. We can definitely grab ice cream after this”.

“It is, even if he came here without even saying he was moving here” Skylar mused, yet it was understandable they hadn’t talked much since Grace passed away. “He won’t, anyone can prove I said those things” she chuckled. “Do you think that could work? If it does we can do that, I kinda need to move standing in these heels it’s so painful”

“Oh really? That’s surprising, you guys seem really close”, Arden commented. It was strange to think that the cousins hadn’t communicated about the fact that they were going to be attending the same university. “You could always take off your shoes, I don’t think anyone is going to judge. You can get away with a lot at Halloween”.

“God they should have put you here.” She chuckled, remembering how many horror movies she’d been forced to sit through in high school, all on account of Arden’s love for them. “Yep. There’s a Harley Quinn costume laid out on my bed with my name on it.”

“Maybe next year”, Arden said simply, making a mental note to talk to the organising committee ahead of the 2022 event so that she could be placed at her dream stall. “You’re going to look phenomenal, I can’t wait to see you in costume”.

Ever since her birthday, Arden and Jackson had started hanging out again. It wasn’t exactly like it had been before all of the drama but honestly, Arden was just glad to have her friend back. As they were on the track and field team together, they had both attended the competition at another local university today and were now sitting next to each other on the bus ride home. “I think my legs are going to fall off, they feel so tight right now”, Arden complained. “Still, it was worth it.
