“Okay, AP Psychology with Mr. Osmond...room A24,” you whispered to yourself trying to maneuver through the crowded halls of East High. Your mind was completely all over the place, quickly becoming overwhelmed with trying to remember your locker number and combination, all your classes along with their room number, and the two story floor plan of the school. “A13, 15, 17, ugh! I just want to find my class. Is there a whole other hall with just the even numbers?”
“Good morning, students! Please make your way to the gym for our annual back to school kickoff,” an announcement came over the intercoms of each hallway.
“Where even is that?” You become frustrated while staring down at your map of the school. “Okay, down the stairs and second door on the left...or right? Am I going the right way?”
You looked up to make sure you didn’t run into anything or anyone, just in time to find out it was too late. You bumped into a figure, causing them to jerk forward. Your schedule and books were sent flying to the floor.
“Ow,” the figure grasped, turning around to look at you. You hadn’t brought yourself to look at the person as you bent down to gather your belongings.
“Are you ok—“ “I am so sorry. I was looking down at my map trying to find the gym and i wasn’t really paying attention,” you sigh, keeping your eyes glued to the floor. You stood up to find an attractive guy staring back at you in confusion. His chocolate brown curls hung over his forehead as he stared down at you.
“...It’s a...It’s no problem,” he quickly flashed a light smile. You returned smile and sat in an awkward silence for a few seconds before he spoke up again, “So you’re new I’m guessing?”
“Yeah, I-“ “You’re new and are socializing with two juniors that are at the bottom of the food chain? That’s pretty risky business,” his friend cut you off that he was speaking to prior to the entire incident.
“Dude?” The brunette mumbled, slight offended, over his shoulder to the red head. The red head shrugged and looked at you before turning back to the brunette, “I’m just being honest.”
The brunette shut his eyes and took a deep breath before looking back at you, “Don’t listen to him. He thinks playing Call of Duty everyday after school makes him highly qualified to shoot a gun.”
“Because it does,” his friend furrowed his brows before closing his locker shut, “You’re just jealous that I have the perfect sniper shot and you don’t.”
“Dude, I barely play,” the brunette argued back.
“You were just at my house yesterday—“ “Anyways, I’m Ricky,” the brunette introduced himself, offering a toothy grin.
“And I’m Big Red,” the red head waved.
“Wow, okay. That was a rollercoaster. Anyways, I’m Y/n,” you say as you smiled at them. You look back down at your schedule and bit your lip.
“Is there any chance that either of you can show me where the gym is?” You ask, trying to cover up your desperation.
“Yeah, sure,” Ricky nodded, “you can sit with us too if you need.”
“Thanks that would be actually be-“ “Why ruin your chance to be popular like that?” Big Red cut you off once again.
“Dude, you have got to learn how to shut up and quit cutting everyone off like that,” Ricky groaned.
Big Red shook his head ‘no’ and began walking in the direction of what you assumed was the gym. Ricky nodded for you to follow.
“I’m sorry if Ricky seems rude. I promise he’s not. Him and his ex just kinda broke up this morning...” Big Red whispered as he strolled beside you. Ricky’s jaw dropped and looked at his friend in disbelief, “Dude, I’m right here.”
You just stayed silent as Big Red continued to ramble, disregarding Ricky being in the middle of you two, “she met this new guy at librarian camp over the summer.”
“Librarian camp...that’s a thing?” You raise an eyebrow. Big Red shrugged his shoulders. Ricky started walking backwards to avert you and Big Red’s attention to him, “No, it’s not...at least I don’t think it is. And we’re just taking a break...”
“Moving on, Big Red, for you information Ricky hasn’t been rude at all,” you chuckle.
“See, thank you, Y/n. I’m happy we meet you, I may need a new best friend by the end of the day,” Ricky pointed at you, falling back into line with you and Big Red.
“Hey, I’m right here. What did I do wrong?” Big Red questioned.
Ricky furrowed his eyebrows at Big Red, “Red, what haven’t you done wrong?”
“Hey!”
-
“Please hold your applause,” a lady was spoke into the microphone after the principal made a few announcements. She set the microphone down and grabbed a huge t-shirt cannon sitting next to the podium. “Go, Wildcats! Yeah.”
She fired the cannon at a random kid in the audience, completely taking him by surprise .
“My name is Ms. Jenn, and when I heard that the high school where High School Musical was shot had never staged a production of High School Musical, the musical, I was shocked as an actress, inspired as a director, and triggered as a millennial...” she trailed off.
You and Ricky looked at each other before mouthing, "millennial?”
He bumped his shoulder with yours lightly as you both silently chuckle to the coincidence.
“I think you owe me a soda,” Ricky whispered over your shoulder before smirking at you slightly. You rolled your eyes at him before turning your attention back to Ms. Jenn, “Auditions are tomorrow after school. This show could change your lives.”
As the student body dispersed, the three you made your way to your first periods.
“Okay, I have to go this way, good luck with your first day, Y/n. Nice meeting you! And I’ll be waiting for that soda!” Ricky yelled as he turned right down the hall. Big Red and you continued to walk towards you first period that you both found out you had together back in the gym.
“That musical thing sounds ridiculous,” Big Red remarked as soon as Ricky left.
“I don’t know, it kinda sounds fun,” you smile, observing your surroundings while trying to memorize the layout of the school.
“Actually? Don’t tell me you’re a musical geek,” Red whined.
You shook your head, “Not really.”
Big Red looked at you and urged you to go on.
“I preformed in like two plays my freshman year. One of which was Hamlet and I played a very small role and the other was Mamma Mia. Gosh that was a disaster,” you sigh to yourself.
“What happened?” He frowned at you.
“Stage fright got the best of me as the lead. The beginning was a nightmare, total word vomit, but once I started to sing and the night progressed, I was okay. Ever since then though I’ve always worked behind the scenes,” you explained.
“So are you going to try out?”
“Possibly,” you smirk at Red and walked into first period with him.
The seats were already assigned so you said goodbye to Big Red and found your seat next to a tanned girl with wavy brown hair. You smiled at her and took your seat.
The girl smiled back and glanced down at your shoes, “No way! I love your shoes. Doc Martens are pretty much the only shoe I own.”
You turn your attention back to the girl and followed her gaze to your jet black boots, “Oh thanks! My mom got me them for my birthday last year.”
“I kid you not when I say they’re pretty much the only thing I ask for every birthday and christmas. I’m Nini,” she held out her hand. You gladly accepted it as your smile grew, “Y/n.”
The teacher walked and waved to everyone, “Hello everyone, thank you for finding your seats. I assigned seats so that partnering would not be an issue as for the person you are sitting next to will be your partner on this first project that is due next week.”
-
“Wait so hey, when works best for you to work on the project? My mom won’t mind us working on it at my house just as long as I give her a heads up,” Nini asked, watching me pack my backpack.
“Do you wanna do it this weekend? I have to help my dad unpack this evening and I have auditions tomorrow...the weekend is the best for me,” you cock your head slightly at her after rambling. Her jaw slightly dropped as a look of excitement flashed across it, “Are you auditioning for High School Musical...the Musical?”
“Maybe! I just think it would be something cool to do and a nice way to make friends since I’m new and all,” you suggest.
She nods, “I thought you were new! I will have to introduce you to my best...her name is Courtney and she has the biggest most brightest personality ever. Also, I’m auditioning too. What part do you want?”
“See that’s where the maybe comes in. I don’t know if I want a part so I was thinking about just talking to whoever is in charge and see if I can be a backstage hand or something,” you sigh, shrugging your backpack on. Nini looks at you understandingly and grins again, “That sounds awesome!”
“What about you?”
Her eyes light up as she looks away for a moment, “I really want to play Gabriella. My boyfriend, EJ, he’s hoping he gets to be Troy so we can be that annoyingly-cute theater couple.”
“That sounds...overwhelming, yet...romantic,” you state as you ponder over the thought.
“Okay, anyways, this weekend is perfect and see you tomorrow,” Nini says before waving to you and leaving as soon as the bell rung.
-
“Hey sweetheart, how your first day?” Your dad smiled at you as you walked into the kitchen from the garage. He turned his head back to his computer while still listening for your response.
“Pretty good,” you explain, grabbing a water from the fridge. Your dad looks up at you from the island and raises an eyebrow.
“I mean did you make any new friends? I want to hear that you’re making some friends. I don’t want you to take on the rest of high school by yourself, hun,” he gave you a sincere look.
You shrugged and grabbed an apple from the fruit basket on the lift hen counter. “I met a few people. Also I’m gonna be home slightly late tomorrow, I’m trying out for the musical.”
-
“No. Absolutely not,” Big Red groaned at Ricky who was currently pacing around his basement. Ricky shook his head at his friend.
“Okay, I know it’s crazy, dude, but she has to see me in a whole new light,” Ricky reasoned while Big Red turned off his gaming headset to listen better.
Red shot Ricky a ‘wtf’ face before stating, “But we hate musicals.”
Ricky sighed, “I don’t hate musicals. I just think it’s weird when people, like, burst into song in the middle of the street.”
“Dude,” Red started, “That’s a musical...”
“Okay, look. I’m auditioning for this thing tomorrow, and nothing is going to stop me,” Ricky stated, pointing slightly at Red.
“Do you even know the plot of High School Musical?” Red asked moving out of his chair to stand in front of Ricky.
“Of course!” Ricky snapped one disbelief, “It’s about Zac Efron dancing with a basketball.”
“Wrong! It’s about the character, Troy, having to choose between being true to his friend, Chad, or following his heart with Gabriella,” Big Red explained. Ricky scrunched his face lightly and gave a questioning look to his best friend.
“Why do you know so much about High School Musical?” He asked.
Red hesitated, “They...uh...They play it on loop at my allergist’s office...Look, the point is, you’re out if you’re league here, man. Alright? You can’t pull this off.”
“Dude, yes I can.” Ricky turned to grab his skateboard.
“Alright have fun getting ridiculed by the entire drama department for mocking them and our almost new friend,” Red sighed.
Ricky furrowed his eyebrows and slowly turned to eye his best friend. He mumbled, “Y/n’s gonna be there?”
Red nodded, “She talked about it on the way to first period.”
Ricky paused for a moment. Was he sure he wanted to do this? Try and get his ex back? Or did he want to explore a new friendship?
“Ricky, you see something in her don’t you?” Red smiled.
“What? No,” Ricky snaps back and shook his head quickly.
“Really? You didn’t seem so sad when I told her about your break up this morning that had happen five minutes beforehand. You simply just shrugged it off,” Red cocked his head.
“Red listen, I’m not gonna embarrass myself tomorrow. And after I audition, Y/n is gonna wanna be our friend ten times as much and I’m gonna win Nini back,” Ricky grinned before leaving to return to his house and watch High School Musical. He could’ve sworn it was just a movie following Zac around, spinning a basketball on his hand.
‘Let’s just hope I’m not fucked,’ he thought to himself.
