[This is my AU which is a mix of both the Disney movie as well as the book itself. Jehan and gringoire are included in the au!]
That necklace. Oh dear, God that necklace adorning her neck was enough to make him weak. Just the sight of the white pearls resting atop her collarbone, contrasting with the soft, fleshy pink color of her skin alone was enough to fluster him. Once she tilted her head up, he got a view of the whole column, taking in every ridge and detail. The man quickly averted his gaze, how could he allow himself such freedom for his eyes? To roam the neck of Parises gardener. But even after looking away, the only thing clouding his mind were the thoughts, the thoughts of wrapping his calloused fingers around that delicate column, feeling every breath, every hitch and swallow against his palm. To run his fingers along her jugular, relishing in every shiver emitted from her when he brushed against the pulse point.
He shook his head to rid of the intruding thoughts, rubbing his temple, eyes cast down in an attempt of modesty.
Shame, shame, shame.
A man of his stature faltering just for a woman's neck was simply laughable, embarrassing even. But who could blame him? A man locked up in the palace of justice most of the time did not have the opportunity to speak to women most of the time.
But when she arrived, when that sweet saint (as he called her) tended to the flowers outside the hall, even with her hands in the dirt she was able to complete her task with an unspoken grace. Disgusting, he needed to take a hold of himself, such behavior was filthy, not fitting for a man like him.
But when she stood straight back up, her emerald eyes glancing back at him, he felt his resolve melting as quick as wax beneath molten lava. The liquid drops of the candle resembling his vulnerability dripping into the ground, surrounding his feet. His whole being laid bare before this woman. Before this sweet, unfairly treated woman.
"Sir Claude?"
The sound of her gentle tone brought him back to reality, snapping out of his conflicted trance.
"Yes, Jonquille?" he asked, waiting for her words, his stern expression wavering slightly in the process. He had expected a question, maybe a request, or.. Something - not for her to gesture to his feet that were trampling a few daisies.
"Those dasies had just bloomed" she continued, a worried frown in her brows, an indirect request for him to spare those flowers from death, especially when they had only just sprung out.
"Ah." the judge exclaimed, taking a step to the side, not making a move to distance himself from Aurélie, - instead he took the opportunity to subtly step closer.
"I apologize. I should truly be careful around such delicate surroundings.." he was unsure whether he was talking about the flowers anymore.
"that's fine, the fence isn't set up yet anyway." the woman reassured with a soft smile. The sunlight casting a warm glow upon her rosy cheeks, accentuating each freckle and mole. Her expression only serving him a worsening feeling of weakness, if he hadn't bit his tongue to ground himself, his knees would've bucked.
"the fence?" he echoed, his clueless response only causing a tilt of curiosity from the woman. He could not simply admit his thoughts and lay himself before her, to tell her how much he wants to kiss each of her pearls, trailing a path up her jaw. He finally caught her gaze before the context slid back into his mind. "Oh, but of course." Claude shook his head, disappointed at his own disfocus.
"is there something on your mind, my sir?" Aurélie questioned softly, noting his own distracted state.
"No." he replied rather quickly, before adding, "Although i appreciate your concern."
Our dear Aurélie might be gullible, but she is not a fool, with a quiet hum, she reached for his hand, causing a violent shiver to shoot through his body, gaining a blink of surprise from the woman before shifting her focus back to their hands.
"you are tense." she observed, lacing their fingers together, each movement, each simple twitch of her skin against his was enough to render the man utterly submissive. But she was right, his shoulders were raised a bit too high, his jaw clenched and his elbows stiff. Claude swallowed hard, his digits trembling in her grasp.
"it is normal for me to be tense, Jonquille. I am always on my guard."
The minister's eyes flickered from her face back to their hands once more, unable to hold her gaze, filled with shame.
"then perhaps you should lower it when there is no danger around?" Aurélie suggested.
Frollo shook his head, "you never know when danger might appear. You can never be completely sure of safety."
"am i the danger? Do you not trust me?"
The question hung thick in the air. Would he admit his shameful attraction, or avoid it as always?
"No, you are not the danger." he started, his grip on her hand tightening a mere fraction, "and i do trust you. I have no reason to think otherwise."
He finally lifted his head to look into the woman's eyes, his breath catching in his throat, like a man cornered in a dead end.
"..I simply cannot ever be a hundred percent sure, my dear."
A soft smile tugged at the corners of the gardener's lips,"so you do trust me. But you are afraid."
He nearly flinched at the accurate reading, "you read me like an open book. Be careful, anyone else could mistake thine empathy for a mind reading spell.. And it would be a shame to lose you to a crime of witchcraft." Claude warned weakly, obvious that he didn't mean the threat.
A deep sigh escaped his lips before he averted his gaze, "i suppose i am.. Afraid" the word but a whisper. "although i am not completely sure what it might be about." the words came out of his mouth with an unexpectedly gentle tone.
"Well.. Fear is a difficult thing to conquer. And i want thee to feel safe around me, so.. I will gladly do everything that i can to earn that trust, to earn your comfort."
Jonquille bit the inside of her cheek, her hand releasing his own, moving up to her lips as if it would push the words that she had just uttered back inside her vocal cords. Had she been too bold? Were her utterances too honest? Too vulnerable?
The only thing that truly had bothered the Judge, was the loss of her touch, of her warmth, a flicker of melancholy disappointment in his expression and an empty, hollow feeling of void in his gut. He had to fight back the urge to either plead for her hand again, or to simply grasp it himself.
"that is.. Kind of you" he admitted, having to refocus his thoughts to remember what she had just said.
"it is not often that a woman like you decide to waste such energy on a man like myself." was this a hint at his age? At his cruel tendencies? Or something else entirely? Who knows, for not even Frollo has a single ounce of an idea to what he might be implying, it was as if his mouth was moving on it's own.
Aurélie gave him a dumbfounded look, shaking her head, "caring about another person is not a 'waste' as you put it. You speak as if you are a burden to me, which you are not"
Claude raised his head to get a better look at her face, searching for any sign of deciet but found none.
"You perplex me."
"is that negative?"
"...No,"
"Not at all." he added.
Aurélie let out a soft breath, turning her gaze to the flora behind her, picking off the leaves that had started to brown, almost on reflex.
The judge's eyes seemed glued to her hands, analyzing every twitch of her digits. There was a subtle, grace which followed every movement she made - or it might have been all in his head - which he refused to believe.
"why do you turn away, Jonquille?" he questioned, his voice uncharacteristically soft, tinged with his worry about her distance.
The woman looked back up at him, "oh, i was not thinking. Or.. More accurately, i was thinking - got lost in thought" she replied.
Was she truly so absentminded?
"i see, what weighs upon your mind, my dear?" he questioned once again, allowing himself to lean down a bit, wanting to be the center of her attention, yet secretly seeking her warmth.
"it is truly nothing, it just went silent and my mind drifted back to the flowers"
A simple answer, really. Maybe even too simple for Claude to even think about believing.
"you must be very absorbed in your work to be thinking about flowers all the time." the Minister commented, his gaze flickering from her hand back to her face, until he once again realized that he couldn't hold her gaze much longer, turning his head in an almost dramatic matter, staring menacingly at the blooms.
The display was amusing, but to Aurélie it was admirable, to see a man fighting his most vulnerable state. She found it cute, adorable even. "it is easier when your worries are towarded to flowers rather than people. Less of a burden"
That sentence caught his attention, tilting his head curiously. "oh? Do you often find yourself concerned with the matters of other people?"
Aurélie nodded, "i do. But don't go thinking that your problems weigh upon me. You are different."
Her words struck him with intrigue, listening intently. For they had just spoken about burdens, and how she should not worry about his problems. She had stated that Claude's feelings were not a burden, yet now she speaks of flowers being less of a burden than other people's mindly troubles. A confusing thing indeed.
"i am different, you say?" his tone gained an unsure note to it, as if not fully believing the woman.
"yes, my sir"
A silence stretched between the two while the judge awaited her elaboration, but gained no words.
"in what way?" he pressed.
Aurélie looked up at him, pursing her lower lip in thought, "it is difficult to put words to my true intentions"
"try for me." that sentence and the low, gentle purr that accompanied it was enough to coax her to speak.
"Well.. There is always a difference between what you care about.. For example, your family, say your brother, Jehan perhaps, your son Quasimodo. Their feelings are a shared burden, are they not?"
The Minister nodded.
"so when you walk along the path and deep into the city of paris, when you reach the bustling streets, you may speak to the baker for instance. Conversation leads to him opening up about a dilemma which he is facing. - you only listen for the moment and forget about it later on. "
Claude's brow furrowed slightly, not in agitation, simply confused as to where she was going with this.
"as for me, i keep thinking about it. Wondering if i could ever find a solution for his problem, even though it does not concern me in the slightest."
"so, what you are saying is that familial burdens - or.. Ah, problems are not burdens as much as the problems of the common folk is?" the poor man was trying his best to understand her view.
"not common folk, just generally other people whom i am not quite acquainted with."
"so, strangers?"
"sometimes, yes."
Claude shook his head, a hand coming up to rub his temple.
"Alright.. So what you are implying is that you simply care too much?"
Aurélie smiled, clapping her hands together, "indeed! Ah i was so worried that my explanation would be confusing"
The older man could only shake his head with a soft sigh, yet could not deny the pull of a smirk at his lips, "a little, but i am glad that i caught on." he paused, "but how come flowers come in to this? Is it because you try to concern yourself with the care for them, rather than the people you do not care for?"
Aurélie blinked, her smile dropping in fear of being misunderstood, "oh! No, no, i do care for them!"
"yes, but you wish you didn't?" he raised an eyebrow.
"i-.." she sighed, turning her head away, "you put it so bluntly, it sounds harsh. I am not a harsh woman." her fingers intertwined into an almost pleading gesture, albeit unintentional.
Claude's expression softened, he should be minful of his words, he scolded himself mentally. Could not bare to upset his dear angel, oh no, that would be a disaster.
"i did not say that you were, my dear" he began, "do not worry about misunderstandings. There is nothing you say that could taint your image to me." the lady had no idea how high of an image he was speaking of. Unaware of the marble pedestal which he had placed her upon. For in the minister's mind, she was the embodiment of light, true purity, sometimes his ideas grew strong enough to even idolize her at times. Seeing a form of divine light, rather than the mortal woman she is.
His words seemed to calm her down, although slowly, she let her hands fall down to her lap again, still keeping them intertwined.
Once Aurélie looked up, a soft smile spread across her lips, "i will try to keep that in mind.."
"Truly a soft soul, are you not?" Claude murmured, the words like an accident, as if a warm caress, yet he gave no reaction or sign of desire to take them back. The gardener had noticed how he had gentled by the time their conversation lasted, but this sentence alone was enough to raise curiosity and even a tinge of surprise.
The reaction we had expected only appeared after a moment of silence with Aurélie simply staring at him in intrigue. The minister cleared his throat, folding his hands together.
"Very well." he said gruffly, trying to muster up an excuse "i should get going, i have.. A scheduled lunch with my boy." he shook his head at his own reminder of his adoptive son, like a duty he wished to avoid.
"oh? Lunch you say? So soon?" Her voice betraying disappointment which tugged at his heartstrings. Aurélie glanced over at the soft lights of sunshine reflected by the water of the seine. Soon indeed, it was barely even noon.
"yes, i have not gathered the supper yet, need some time for that aswell" he spoke as if in thought.
"perhaps we could.. Meet again? When you aren't occupied by work, that is." he looked at her expectantly, trying his best to make his request sound casual and not a desperate plea for her attention. "I'd like that" she smiled, "I'll be free by the evening, we could.. Find somewhere else to meet." she looked over at the garden behind her, taking in the greenery peeking out between flowers. Bushes of lillies, roses and hydrangeas huddled up together in neat, symmetrical shapes, each clipped and loved by the same woman who gazed upon them with boredom. "you might have grown sick of seeings this garden all the time."
Her words felt like an insult, "grown sick? Oh by god, no. This is the-" his body language became almost animated, gesturing dramatically towards the blooms, the neatly clipped grass and the fountain. "the result of your ever so persistent labor, my dear, Jonquille!" the second confused glance from her made him cool down again, retracting his hands. "..do not underestimate your work." he later simply added.
But the desire to meet at another place was not foreign, somewhere away from the judgement of the cathedral itself. Somewhere to break the familiar routine.
"but if you wish to reunite in another place.. Why not the seine? It is quite somber at sunset."
Aurélie hummed at his suggestion, to her it was almost intimate, an invitation from a man who wanted to spend time with her outside of work hours, outside of coincidental meetings. It was enough to warm the sweet woman's heart.
"Sounds lovely."
"then it's settled. It was nice speaking to you, mademoiselle Jonquille." his steps were hesitant, not wanting to move an inch further from her presence.
"same goes to you, Sir Claude" her nervosity glued her in place despite the urge to embrace him, latch onto his arm and never let him go.
The reluctant nature of the departure left the two simply staring at eachother, minds swirling with unspoken thoughts and desires.
Right as the minister descided to look away, Aurélie stepped forward, seizing his wrist gently and pressing a feather light caress of her lips against each hollowed cheek. The touch was almost electric, Claude stood frozen in place, eyes shot wide, the same skin which Aurélie had kissed - now colored by a deep crimson.
"á plus tard, Monsieur.." were the words that left her gentle lips once she pulled away.
"..T-tard.." the dramatics of his turnaround caused his coat to billow behind him in an almost violent manner, leaving only the echo of his shoes against the hard flooring of Notre Dame as he disappeared out of sight.
