The Journal Readers (c.1660-1670). Jan Steen (Dutch, c.1625-1679). Oil on panel. Sammlung E.G.Bührle.
Three men read the journal, or newspaper, as a woman listens. The composition of the painting is balanced and economical. The order of color is pure and fine. The purple, brown, and green of the clothing are subdued by a definite gray-brown tone; The red jacket and the woman’s white hood are the brightest, bringing the focus on the newspaper and her.
