Julia: yeah we don't use the label of dad or father. either sperm donor or douchebag. david if we're feeling generous. but yeah, my mom has really pulled through, she gave everything she had to make sure that we still had a good life. she's the best. Julia: I could definitely be into helping with that, maybe we could even rope tina into helping if she's not swamped with making costumes for people. speaking of halloween, that's when you and jackson got engaged and he hasn't said anything yet to me about if you two have set a date or anything. have you guys planned much yet?

Owen: fair enough lol. 😂 but yeah, that's exactly why i definitely would love to have some actual bonding time with her here soon, so fingers crossed! Owen: sounds pretty perfect to me! i'm good at what i do at the shelter, but i'll always take a little more help for the finer details like this. you know what? that's a great question. and honestly? can't really say we have. i think we've both been thinking pretty similar in the way that we can take our time with this. i mean, if we're planning to spend the rest of our lives together anyway, what's the rush? Owen: ...that being said, though, we ARE coming up on almost a year now, huh? probably about time i maybe start bringing it up a little more with him. 😅

Gotta say, I really don't get more frequent reminders that I'm probably not ready to have kids than I do when I go to the grocery. I was there today just grabbing a few things and I see this kid just bawling their eyes out and, even though I know it's probably just a tantrum because they're not getting their way, my heart starts hurting and it genuinely upsets me. And if that's how a child crying makes me feel when it's not even mine then, phew... yeah, definitely not ready. Not that I'm in a rush or anything, for the record, but still. The curse of being a softie, I guess.

Julia: yeah of course. and you're very right about that, I mean she pretty much raised me, jackson, amber, and marley all on her own. marley was like pretty much at that age where she could start doing a lot more for herself, but obviously still needed a mom and all. Julia: well even if you're not entirely up to speed by halloween, you can still give it a shot and I can always help patch up whatever needs patching up in time for the town party or any other halloween parties you plan on going to. and if it's not sewing then... yeah I'm sure we can figure something else out. maybe something to do with cats or the shelter? not really sure what it would be, but we can figure it out.

Owen: and honestly, that's so impressive. i have a ton of respect for anybody that's a single parent, whether they chose to be or not. jackson's never talked to me much about your dad and i don't really ask him to, but from what i do know, i think millie's extremely resilient and i think she's gone above and beyond when it comes to how well she raised all of you. Owen: well, now that we're talking about it... provided i do get those starter sewing lessons from your mom, maybe our thing could be working on some cute costumes together for the animals at the shelter. we always try to have a halloween event to drum up some more support and potential homes for them. nothing too crazy, just a small event with snacks for people to come and see them and, obviously, hopefully agree to adopt them.

Julia: oh yeah that makes sense. considering how there's always some stereotype about in-laws, especially with the parents. not that I can imagine anyone having a bad relationship with my mom anyway, but unfortunately I guess it happens... Julia: definitely! she loves getting the opportunity to teach sewing tips and tricks, that's where I learned how to make my own halloween costumes. watching her when we were all younger and then eventually she let me handle a needle on my own. hey then maybe you and I could have making our own costumes be our own sibling-in-law hobby together or something lol

Owen: obviously definitely still need to get to know millie more, but yeah, in all reality, i don't think i ACTUALLY have anything to worry about. she seems like an absolute saint, honestly. Owen: wellllll not sure i'll ever be THAT good, but i'm definitely willing to try and see if i can pick it up. 😅 if anything, i could at least get good enough to assist with yours if you wanted me to! and, regardless, even if it's not sewing, hopefully we will find our own little sibling-in-law thing one of these days!

Julia: not that there's any big secrets in the rose family or anything, but why exactly are you asking? pretty sure you're already in my mom's good graces just by being the person who's made jackson smile a little more than usual, even if it's still not a whole lot. Julia: but um, I don't know if it's really an interest, but she did always seem to enjoy sewing when we were kids, fixing up old clothes and making our halloween costumes.

Owen: i guess i just realized that even though there's no reason for me to think she doesn't like me, i haven't spent a lot of time with her one-on-one. and, i mean, she's going to be my mother-in-law! i don't want to just assume i have a good relationship with her. i'd rather make sure of it and have her see that i want an actual relationship with her beyond just her seeing me as her son's husband. does that make sense? Owen: sewing, huh? well, i have no idea how to sew. maybe she'd like teaching me a thing or two. you think that's a good idea?

You know, I have to admit, as much of an animal lover as I am, it's also true I really don't know much about sea creatures or, honestly, really think about them all that much. I feel like I'm not informed enough to have an absolute favorite, but I mean... in my mind, if all the stories about them are to be believed, it's hard not to go with dolphins.

New - what would you do if you won the lottery?

So, little known fact - and, yes, I'm being sarcastic since it's much of what I talk about these days - but I'm getting married. So, if I was lucky enough to win the lottery, however much is needed to pay for the wedding and everything else would be the most immediate use, plus our honeymoon. I doubt it'd be anything too crazy, though. Neither of us are really the types to go out of our way for some sort of big, expensive wedding.

Other than that, definitely putting quite a lot of it away for a rainy day and then... maybe spoiling our pets with a bunch of new toys since I can't help myself.

Right? Some people just wanna be miserable and make the world miserable with them. And yeah, I saw it. I'll be honest, even if a movie doesn't necessarily interest me, there's still a chance I'll sit in on it if I have the time. Honestly, it was pretty great, definitely a top tier Pixar film in my opinion, with the message and everything that it's giving. I definitely recommend it.

Yeah, I tend to distance myself from those sorts of people. Like they say, life is 10% percent what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. I know that's not always the easiest saying to follow, but it does ring true. Well, great! I'm glad to hear it got your stamp of approval. I might just drag Jackson with me to see it then. What good is a future husband if he's not gonna see movies with you, huh?

One of my favorite parts of working at the theater is honestly just people watching when a movie lets out. You can immediately tell who loved it and who’s about to rant the whole way to the parking lot. Take that new Pixar movie Hoppers, for example. The marketing didn’t give much away, and without spoiling anything, there’s a twist that caught a lot of people off guard. Some people loved it, others… not so much, especially a few parents who definitely weren’t expecting it to get a little intense for their kids. It’s kind of interesting seeing how differently people react when a movie isn’t exactly what they thought it was going to be. Like you see people complain about a trailer giving too much away, but then when the promotion keeps it more vague, people can still end up getting upset with the outcome of the film, you know?

What that says to me is that nobody will ever be completely satisfied and that's just how it is, honestly. Difficult to remember if you're a people pleaser that likes to think otherwise, but... yeah. And, yes, on occasion I am also one of those said people pleasers and I am big enough to admit that. On the subject of that movie, though, have you seen it yourself? I was thinking of setting aside some time to go see it.

I need everyone to weigh in on something important. If you accidentally make prolonged eye contact with a raccoon while taking the trash out at 1:30 in the morning and it doesn't run away, is that a threat or some kind of mutual understanding? Because we stared at each other for a full ten seconds and I feel like we exchanged some kind of legally binding agreement.

You know, babe, sadly I'm not really an expert on raccoons so it's tough to say. I'm also a little offended I'm only finding out now there's one lurking around outside our place. My next suggestion would be I take out the trash with you next time and hopefully it pops back up. Not only so I can fairly give you my judgment on this supposed legally binding agreement, but also because I also want said legally binding agreement.

Oh trust me, if I though I could handle a whole farm on the edge of town, I would totally be down to do that! Of course, with it being just me by myself and not exactly having the means to be able to hire help and also the fact I literally just bought my own house like a year and a half ago that I'm still paying on, it just is not in the cards for me at this time. Visiting a wildlife animal sanctuary would be a great trip! I haven't been to one since probably when I was in college, but the one in the Poconos is pretty nice!

Yeah... I'd say that makes sense. For me, I just don't think Jackson would really be okay with me taking in a bunch of new animals, let alone any that aren't normal domestic pets. Our place is pretty full just with us, the dogs, and Artemis. But, hey, we can dream, can't we? Good to know! I definitely want to get that put together soon if I can, so you'd definitely be welcome to come with if you want!

Did anyone see that article about raccoons apparently becoming more domesticated, but then some raccoon biologist ended up kind of debunking it and saying it's not accurate? Honestly, I'm kinda bummed, because who wouldn't want a raccoon for a pet, you know? Yes, I'm aware I have two dogs and three cats as it is, but I can't help but love some of those adorable woodland creatures. Like opossums, too! I'd love to have an opossum as a pet.

I mean, you know me, I'm the last person that would ever judge you for wanting some less common pets! If I had the space for it and the expert knowhow to properly care for all of them, I'd probably have a whole zoo in my house. Alas, though, I think animal lovers like us will just have to settle for actual zoos and things like animal sanctuaries. Speaking of, I still am dying to organize an actual trip to an animal sanctuary sometime soon.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun just a little bit, since it's not until June, but I do like to be prepared: does anyone have any suggestions or requests for Pride events at Coda this year? Last year's Rainbow Menu got a lot of positive feedback, and since it'll also be our second anniversary I'd love to have another open mic night to celebrate, but I'm open to new ideas! Just because we always do an open mic night doesn't mean we always should, you know? And since it's the people of Ashford Valley that have helped us make it this far, I want to hear what you guys want in the future, too!

Well, first of all, I'd like to humbly request you do this menu again this year. I don't even remember what I was so busy with last Pride, but I know I didn't get a chance to try any of these out! As for suggestions, though... I'm not sure I have too much more to offer. I mean, as far as I know, open mics have proved successful so far, so if it isn't broke, don't fix it, right? Oh! Maybe something like a Pride-themed singles mixer? Or... maybe not. I'm not even sure those are still a thing in this day and age.

Well, with ugly Christmas sweaters being a thing and Christmas being a winter holiday, it makes sense to still correlate sweaters with winter! And oh, um... well I don't think there was more than 5 total phases. Between being the quite kid to the kid who faked a speech impediment to goth vampire-ish vibes to emo to bohemian chic... And now I'm pretty much the last three all wrapped up into one, plus a little extra!

Wow, those are... definitely phases, alright. I'm kind of impressed. Or, actually, impressed may not be the right word depending on how you take that. But, hey, nothing wrong with experimenting with your look at all. Me, personally, I've always just found comfort in my hoodies, flannel, and maybe the occasional cardigan. Especially at this time of year. At this time of year, you'll probably hardly see me without a cardigan on.
