“Should I consider it an amazing twist of fate that Amazon Prime Day fell on my birthday? Not that I’ve bought anything substantial, but I’ve already got six orders of neon glitter gel pens on the way and the day is still young…”
“You act as if I couldn’t get those for you from the supply closet for free, Winslow. Still, happy birthday, kiddo. Another year closer to become a granny, isn’t that exciting?”
“Okay bottle cap collecting is where you’ve gotta stop. Take him to a theme park, take him to get a burger, play mario kart.”
“Hey, bottle cap collecting can be very fun and informative... or so I’ve heard. I think that’ll keep him entertained for about a week at the most--- I’m doing my best to be creative, but I guess I’m more boring than I thought.”
“You could bring him by the day care, they have camp for older kids. How old is your son? They take kids up to the age of ten.”
“Really? He’s turning seven in a few weeks, and he’s a really sweet kid. I’m just doing my best to give him the best summer possible, but apparently, my idea of fun is right out of the Fifties handbook, which isn’t all that appealing to him.”
“If you ever need a baby sitter to de-bore him, I’m totally open.”
“Are you actually good with kids or is this a mercy thing? I mean, on his behalf, not mine--- I think he’s getting tired of my waffles, but I’m not a guy who knows how to cook very much!”
“Oh no no, O, I swear, she was looking at me funny– you too, although she might have just found you handsome which is completely understandable. She knew I was on to her, though, and that’s why she complimented me. To throw her off.” Her brow furrowed in frustration as she settled contently beside him. “Owen,” she scolded, though her lips curled into a small grin, “That’s not funny– it could be very serious.”
“You know, you seem to assume that people look at me because they find me handsome quite a lot, but I’m convinced that such an opinion is pretty much exclusive to you--- nobody else sees me that way. Not that it matters, I’ve got you, so I’m already shooting high beyond my weight. And yes, I’m quite sure that she genuinely loved your flowers. I don’t know if you’ve realized this, Lillian, but people genuinely love you and aren’t trying to kill you.” Owen chuckled, guiding the blonde towards the front entrance of his home. “Mm, wait,” he murmured, pulling his girl loser and resting his forehead against hers. “I’ve got to savor this moment with you, because the moment we step in there, I won’t be able to kiss you the way I really want to until Will is asleep.” Pressing his lips against her nose and cupping her jaw, the teacher flashed a dazed grin, “I had a really good time with you tonight, Lil. Even if you were quoting crime statistics most of the evening.”
“You’d think having the whole summer off would be a relief, but I’m actually losing my mind--- and I’ve still got until September! I’ve built three birdhouses, a tree house, and I’m pretty sure my son is getting bored of how many times I’ve suggested taking up a bottle cap collection. What else am I going to do?”
“I have got to stop watching crime shows– especially when I’m alone. I’ve been convinced that every person who has walked into my shop the last few days has been following me and has a thing for blondes who love flowers and eat fries twice a day. That’s not crazy, right?”
“Sugar, as I have been trying to explain for the last two hours, the woman was only following us because she wanted to compliment your selection of bouquets,” Owen chuckled, though kept a firm arm curled around Lillian’s waist nonetheless. Leaning in with a conspiring whisper, he uttered with attempted seriousness that was derailed by his cool grin, “Unless you think you’re being followed because of something else, eh?”
“And how exactly did this injury occur?”
“Oh, well, William just got a bit too excited about his new bike and took a bit of a tumble,” Owen shrugged, placing a gentle hand on his son’s shoulder. “This is more of a precautionary thing--- he looks fine enough, right?”
“Just go away.”
“Oh, I didn’t mean to intrude, I just--- is everything alright, ma’am?”
“Oh thank goodness, I don’t think I could would be able to go on after seeing you and my sweet William that worked up over something silly. Especially if it’s directed at whatever child we muster up,” the blonde beamed, her cheeks growing red from her fit of giggles. “Oh honey, you’re not that bad– you have your moments of maturity and when you win, it’s pretty impressive. So long as no one gets hurt, of course. Although you may make me eat my words with Monopoly. How can three grown men get so competitive? Is it the testosterone? Is it old rivalries? Is it an alpha male thing? Or just a thing brothers do? I sincerely don’t understand it. Honestly, I expected to get some sympathy from Olive but now that I think of it, I’m sure she just grins and is proud of her manly men. But thank god for Jenny. Poor girl. I’m sure your grand, flaming gesture was incredible, truly. And while I love you, I just don’t trust the fire. Plan B, though, I’m sure when it comes to you it’ll be much better. And more appropriate.” Those his smirk softened, Lillian’s only grew as she watched him move closer. “Ah, your lips are the problem now,” raising her chin, she dropped her hand and allowed her fingers to curl against his chest as she removed any gap between them, “Agony, hm? If they’re in agony, then do you think you should really be using them too much?”
“Nah, Sweet William is quite certainly gonna live up to his nickname and end up being a much better functioning adult than I could ever manage to be,” Owen chuckled, content with the idea that his son, even at his young age, would sprout into a much more well-mannered chap than the rambunctious Harrison kids ever managed to be. Despite what they lacked biologically, William was proving to take after Lillian’s graceful timidity; it seemed fitting that two of the most important people in his life would become such mirrors of each other. “I think you’re slightly biased and unwilling to admit what a total idiot I can be, but that’s just because you’re achingly sweet, which is one of the millions of reasons I love you. See, I don’t know if it’s an alpha-male thing or just a weird competitive streak, but it’s always been like this--- we could turn anything into a race, even when it came to who could finish their ice cream first. Jenny, of course, would take the slowest and always end up having more ice cream, so she turned out to be the unofficial winner of our dumb games. I sincerely hope that whatever other children we end up having don’t continue the cycle; even I know how pathetic we’re starting to look. I’ll be an old man trying to prove to my brothers that I have the coolest Life-Alert… granted, seeing as I’ll be right beside you in my old age, I’m pretty sure that’s the best victory of all.” A rueful smirk etched itself over his lips, hanging his head in shame, “God, how do you cope with how sappy I can get?” With Lillian nestled adorably against his chest, Owen felt his entire being warm, tingling the tips of his fingers. “I think you’re just trying to torture me if you’re attempting to deprive me of kisses, sugar,” Owen whispered, placing a hand on the small of her back. “In which case, I’ll have to figure out a way to get you back in return. And I’m sure that you’re aware that I don’t always play fair.”
