On Magatsukami: A Few Noragami Thoughts

Imagine being me, minding my own business on a Saturday night and doing absolutely nothing Noragami research-related, when I read the following sentence on a random page on the Fatal Frame wikia:

In Japanese mythology, Magatsuhi-no-kami were kami of disorder and misfortune that were created when Izanagi, returning from the underworld (Yomi), performed Misogi to purify himself.

You mean my efforts to research magatsukami (禍津神 magatsukami) in mythology were unsuccessful because the name is spelled differently (禍津日神 magatsuhi no kami)?! Literally one kanji difference! Adachitoka’s so sneaky!

Anyway, explanation and thoughts ahead.

Ok just rewatched wudm and the thing that grabbed me the most this time around was how much of it was built on storytelling, narrative, and the relationship between fact and fiction. I think this film has some really interesting things to say on how we all rely on these narratives and storytelling devices, whether it's faith in God, detective stories, police procedurals, someone we trust, or our own mythologies to decipher real life when that isn’t always practical or truthful, but they can still bring us comfort anyway and there is always a reason to believe in something to a healthy capacity. What it lands on, that having faith in and grace for both ourselves and others is the most important/practical use of that belief to enact real change in the world, is just a perfect way to handle these themes without getting too meta (although the meta-ness of Blanc's aspect of this theme playing out is great and provided some much needed humbling for him).

I think it's incredibly sad that all tumblr wants to focus on with batman arkham shadow is scarecrow simping. Like... Camoflaj themselves have admitted to getting an actual psychologist on site for their script??? This is the most focused and caring the arkhamverse has been with these characters and yet??? People have just been reducing the entire effect Arkham Shadow has had to just one character??? What about the arc's of Harley & Batman?

What about the potential conflicts; the angst & comfort of this Bruce & Dick as they adjust to each other?? What about the discovery that Bruce is the guy who mercilessly beat on you from Dick's perspective? & Discovering that the entire mythos of the Rat King was a lie conceived from Harvey Dent's ill mind?

Bruce being forced to confront his change in ideals as of the end of Shadow, & learning the best ways to help the mentally ill & unfortunate following the game? Given that voicemail he received, poring his heart & money into the asylum in hopes of bettering his villains with the desire to one day see them rehabilitated, only to see the facility close a decade later & therefore your hopes with it?

So much potential has been unearthed by this game, yet no one seems to be interested in investigating it??? I hope this story receives more recognition but I'm doubtful given what the tags seem to be consumed by.

Or future encounters between Joe & Bruce? Joe is not sure what he's expecting at this point, & Bruce??? He's not sure what he's feeling, he's not ever going to be able to forget, not sure if he's ever going to forgive 'crime itself' for taking his parents away, but Joe as a person? He might have just forgiven him the moment he discovered who he was.

Give me a fanfic of that one moment in the comics where in Joe's final moments, Bruce (The Batman!!!) is the one to comfort him when he's all alone. Joe has spent his 20 years fearing that moment where they meet, yet at that time? In that moment Bruce is ready to forgive what has happened. He still considers Joe in part his worst nightmare & a friend all rolled into one, but he's beginning to accept that he's human. & so are the criminals he's faced.

Give me those human moments in the Arkhamverse when it's mostly been focused on the mythology of the characters.
