If you are reading this,
Hello.
How are you?
Auguste Rodin, Lovers
Dolores and Karla. Europe, 1961. Kodachrome slides.
Watch me build a life and feel fed. I’ll leave hurt at the door. I am so painfully full of love. I could even say my heart is simple, again.
— Kayleb Rae Candrilli, from “Transgender heroic: all this ridiculous flesh,” Water I Won’t Touch
Last night I dreamed I had an affair.
A fleeting moment.
A kiss in a stairwell.
A face buried in my neck,
His hot breath.
My deep sigh.
Finally, it wasn’t your kiss.
Finally, it wasn’t your breath.
Finally, a man who wasn’t you.
I woke like a bird seeing its cage had been open all this time.
Two nights ago I dreamed you and I were standing in a room with blood red walls.
And my face was everywhere.
My face a thousand times, drawn, painted, sketched.
On scraps of paper,
Bar napkins,
Canvas,
Fabric,
Flower petals,
Bed sheets.
A shrine to my hair wisps and flat mouth.
You stood next to me and said the room smelled like death.
And as you turned to leave,
You dropped a single lit match.
I burned with all of my selves.
