I was interested in the effect UB was having in gendered representation in MTG, so I did some "research" to check how many men and women are represented in standard UB sets. The methodology is somewhat flawed, but is as follows.
I conducted a scryfall search for legendary creature cards with only women in the art and with only men in the art. I used art tags instead of sets to capture bonus sheet cards and commander sets. Example:
Avatar 60 men, 32 women
Marvel (including spiderman): 283 men 113 women
TMNT: 78 men, 18 women
Final Fantasy: 136 men, 53 women
LOTR: 118 men, 18 women
None of these are even close to 50:50 especially when you compare to some recent magic settings:
Bloomburrow: 19 men, 15 women
Ravnica: 76 men, 56 women
Strixhaven: 15 men, 13 women
Eldraine: 27 men, 28 women
While I understand that these cards are based on pre-existing properties that have flawed representation to begin with, is this not hurting our game by rolling back representation that has been built up over caring designers over decades?
Hello everyone! Kawada Studios is currently in search of several voice actors to fill supporting roles for the demo of Extra Credits with Athena.
We've set a payment of $0.35 per word spoken, with $20 dollars as the minimum payout.
These include:
Rector Zeus — Male, 40–60
Athena’s father and the leader of Olympus University.
We’re looking for a warm-hearted voice actor who can capture Zeus’s overwhelming pride for his daughter, his tendency to embarrass her in front of others, and the eccentric personality that's always bubbling underneath the dignified exterior.
429 words across 56 lines
Payment: $155
Nike — Female, 18–25
A confident, athletic go-getter and a member of Athena’s inner circle of friends.
Think Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony: competitive, energetic, outspoken, and endlessly driven. Nike is one of Olympus University’s most decorated track-and-field athletes.
91 words across 17 lines
Payment: $40
Note: Nike is being designed as a Black woman, so Black actresses and actresses from other POC backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
Hephaestus — Male, 18–25
A reclusive but kind soul beneath a harsh steampunk exterior.
Hephaestus spends most of his free time tinkering in his workshop and generally prefers the company of robots to that of other deities. He is also part of Athena’s friendship group and quietly nurses an unrequited crush on her.
93 words across 14 lines
Payment: $40
Artemis — Female, 18–25
The resident gossip of Olympus University.
Years spent hunting wild game have somehow translated into an extraordinary talent for spreading salacious rumours about her classmates—especially Athena and Medusa, both of whom she holds a particular dislike towards.
45 words across 7 lines
Payment: $20
Note: Artemis is currently being designed as an Indigenous American woman, so Native American and Indigenous actresses are strongly encouraged to apply.
Ahura Mazda — Female, 40–60
The head librarian of Olympus University and one of two Zoroastrian deities working there, alongside her daughter, Ahriman.
Ahura Mazda is widely respected by the Greek faculty and shares a friendly rivalry with Zeus over board games.
4 words across 2 lines
Payment: $20
Note: Our version of Ahura Mazda is female, and actresses from Persian, Iranian, or Zoroastrian backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Sphinx — Female, 40–60
An exchange professor teaching at Olympus University and a transgender woman.
The Sphinx is calm, intelligent, composed, and quietly dislikes everything Medusa represents. She prefers giving her students riddles rather than traditional tests, though she occasionally struggles to manage classroom behaviour—particularly when one green Gorgon girl is involved.
43 words across 9 lines
Payment: $20
Note: Egyptian and transgender actresses are strongly encouraged to apply.
