hello, all. welcome to my brand new shiny personal blog! previously i was at dangermousse and owljolson, but one i haven’t touched in a grip and the other got ravaged by a random shadowban for who-knows-what reason. also, they’re both old as all hell and it felt like time for a fresh start. maybe i’ll delete them some day, but for the foreseeable future, i’m leaving them up as archives.

i really hate to do this, but i'm bringing this post up again. my temporary job ended a month ago and i'm still looking for a new job to replace it. i've had a lot of initial interviews, and a second-round interview yesterday that i feel very hopeful about, but nothing solid is currently on the horizon. even if something good does happen soon, it'll take a few weeks to officially kick in and also pay me.

as a result, i am again super royally screwed financially at the moment. i've gotten a little unemployment insurance this time at least, but i'm dead-ass broke and in another 'will i be able to make all my payments at the end of the month' situation. i've tried looking into assistance to lower some of my monthly payments and other things, but i was essentially refused help until i'm fully employed again. this economy and country sucks and i'm so tired.

if you can help out or even just reblog so others can see, i'd really appreciate it. sorry for clogging your dashboard again.

it's really funny reading very old books that were written long before the concept of the autism spectrum was introduced into general societal knowledge, because sometimes you'll see a character described as "this is my friend, he's terrible at social cues, he takes a while to process and talk about things, and sometimes he'll just blast you with random hyperfixation facts he knows" and just go I Know What You Are

they were just some guys. the whole point was that they were just some guys. they met in Eden. Aziraphale didn't like Crowley because he met him as an angel and saw the good in him. he met him as a demon on a random day that was the most important day in the beginning of the world because they both made it that way. they met and they quite simply hit it off. they kept meeting again and again because they sought each other out, not because some red string of fate twirled by god forced them together. two like-minded emissaries on earth. they liked each other from the start and neither felt bad about it at all. they both recognized that angels and demons were the same. they were equals. they challenged each other and grew together but also they were lazy bastards who didn't care about humans all that much. they cared about their earthly pleasures, like driving irresponsibly fast and hoarding treasures. they wanted to save the earth mostly for egoistical reasons, though humanity as a whole and as a concept had also grown dear to them. they were never more important than anyone else. they were not god's best or specialest little angels or grim-dark generals or leaders of armies or people called upon to make decisions on behalf of anyone. they weren't even good at what they were supposed to do, often consciously so. one was not better or smarter or more right than the other. they were some guys and they didn't give a fuck and they gave all the fucks and cared so much and they were truly, absolutely bastards worth knowing. their friendship and love story was so grand because it was not grand. they were supposed to be just some guys.

something that really bums me out about books these days is how cheap and shoddy a lot of the cover art is, especially on digital versions

cover art on a lot of books used to be so interesting and expressive, even the cheap mediocre novels or the art that had nothing to do with what was actually in the book would draw you in, it was art made with love by creative people, it's a big part of why browsing old used book shops can be so fun

nowadays so much stuff is just ai-generated slop, the cheapest shittiest vector art you've ever seen, or photos from the mediocre live action adaptation

like, i was first made aware of the hollow man (also known as the three coffins) in wake up dead man, because rian johnson is a john dickson carr fan (was very surprised to see he'd written the forward to a modern possibly-digital-only release of the problem of the wire cage), and i was very intrigued by the book, and i quite liked the original edition cover art version they used in the movie, and some of the old alternate editions of the book were pretty fun to look at as well

then i went to look at a current official digital version and

a slightly more modern version of this is terry pratchett discworld novels where the original uk editions had fantastic entertaining colorful illustrations, but then the us editions would be bland solid covers with a bit of essentially clipart because we're not allowed to have fun i guess

finally got around to seeing project hail mary, movie was fun and cute and very nice to look at, best alien buddy in a while

between this movie and the artemis missions i hope a bunch of people have gotten inspired because we need more good scifi media and love for science and the terrible beauty of space in the world

there should never have been any good omens after the first season and its adaptation of the book

no pre-fall origin story stuff for crowley, we should never have seen him as an angel, we should never have seen or learned anything about him or aziraphale or anybody else that happened before eden

everything else after the first season is floundering around looking for something to do and adding in information that wasn't needed and which didn't quite work and in some cases went directly against the original story

we didn't need a finale about destroying everything for the sake of free will, free will is literally what the original story and first season was about, and this ending renders everything that happened before completely pointless, it kills off everybody and everything and destroys all the effort that was taken by the characters and the uncertain but very much there positivity of that initial ending, and gives no real closure for the characters that have been around so long and that we have been reading about and watching for so long

good omens is a story about a bunch of nobody people, including a nobody demon and a nobody angel who need no detailed biographies, coming together to fight destiny and choose free will and hope in the face of everything, and they got an ending, one that's pretty open-ended as to what could theoretically come next, but an ending nonetheless, and a satisfying one

i hate to use a term like 'slap in the face' because that feels overly-emotional, but this finale feels like it was made by people who did not understand the original story and its message or the characters at all, if they even read/watched it in the first place, resulting in us getting what we got, and no sappy why-do-they-look-like-that fanfic AU happy ending can make up for that
