Actually, people are good by nature and youâre a fool if you think otherwise.
When you sneeze in public, strangers will say âbless youâ, even though they donât know you.
When you ask for directions on the street someone will show you the way, even though they have nothing to gain from it.
People squeeze their legs against the chair so you donât have to hop over them on your way to your seat in the theatre, and make funny faces to make babies laugh, and purposefully step on leaves to hear them scrunch, and hold the door open for someone leaving behind them, and ask what floor youâre heading to when you enter the elevator, and send others photos of things that reminded them of them, and recommend each other songs, and ask if anyone else wants a coffee because theyâre getting one, and make videos teaching how to sew a button, and wish on shooting stars, and share fun facts, and listen to others rant about things they donât even understand, and let you cross the street first, and give a bit of their food to others, and laugh at jokes they donât find funny to make you feel good, and listen to kids talk for hours about nonsense, and let you know your keys fell from your pocket, and they may be strangers, but with every little gesture theyâre saying âI love you, I love you, I love youâ.
God, I needed to read this today. Humanity is overwhelmingly full of hope and kindness and itâs very easy to forget that these days.
Hereâs one increase in traffic that wonât have you pounding a car hood: The cityâs waters have been rife with sightings of marine life all s
Thank you for sharing this! This is another one of those situations where we are just now seeing the noticeable, dramatic payoff of years and years of quiet, unnoticed environmental work.
âExperts say years of conservation efforts have resulted in some of the healthiest waters in generations, with booming fish populations, clearer ocean waves and more chances to interact with our urban aquarium.â
This quote also really got me:
ââIt never gets old, itâs always thrilling,â said Celia Ackerman, a naturalist with American Princess Cruises who captured the images. As a child growing up in Brooklyn, Ackerman couldnât wait to move out of the city so she could study marine animals. 'I would have never imagined I could enjoy them here right in my backyard.ââ
Not only that, but theyâve recently introduced millions of baby oysters into the waters to continue the clean up process!Â
Itâs fantastic news for the health of the Hudson River as well as the harbor.
I would die for Big
I was in⊠I think 6th grade when we went on a school field trip on the Hudson. Part of the trip involved briefly dredging the river and âhelpingâ the naturalists leading the trip identify the different species.
I will never forget how excited they got when they identified the small (1-2ft) sturgeon. We nad no clue what the big deal was with a big (to us) greyish fish.
It was the first time they had seen a sturgeon that far down the Hudson.
That was nearly 30 years ago.
About 15 years ago, a friend who lived near the Hudson told me they they didnât see a point in trying to âsave the worldâ because everything was screwed already and it was only a matter of how long until the end.
Which is to say that the Hudson and nearby ocean have been healing a bit at a time for decades and often the healing is invisible to everyone but the experts.
That working to fix things matters, even when you canât see the progress.
That this absolutely amazing milestone is the result of thousands, perhaps millions, of people working in science, in industry, in education, in civil engineering, to make hundreds or thousands of seemingly âlittleâ changes.
Our actions matter. Work for structural change. Believe in the change you canât yet see.
:)
Antarctic sponges live on a time scale we can barely comprehend.Â
UPDATE: WHAT THE FUCK
old boys
it took me 3 times reading this post to realized that (wild) meant living in the wild and wasnât just a casual remark on the longevity of these organisms
Maximum longevity: 15,000 years (shit dude)
Aurora borealis dragon on labradorite for @jackdaw-kraai
My ancestors, watching me dump an entire stick of cinnamon, two cloves, an allspice berry, and a generous grating of nutmeg into my tea, sweetened with white sugar and loaded with cream, while I sit in my clean warm house surrounded by books, 25+ outfits for different occasions, and 6 pairs of shoes, in a building heated so well I have the windows open in mid-autumn:
Our daughter prospers. We are proud of her. She has never labored in a field but knows riches we could not have imagined.
I like this so much better than the idea that our ancestors would be embarrassed or ashamed of us for being âsoftâ or some crap like that.
My ancestors, watching me stuff my face with fried chicken while studying: She eats like an imperial concubine and can afford to study like am imperial scholar. WE MADE IT
She eats like an imperial concubine and can afford to study like am imperial scholar
My ancestors watching me use my stand mixer while living in a small apartment and attending university: Thou hast kneadeth bread in FOUR hail marys??? FOUR??? And thou ist poor as a churchmouse, yet liveth in a fine cottage with four pounds butter and fresh berries in thy larder!! And two featherbeds! And thou attendeth the Kingâs college, as a lord!!
My ancestors being like:
Look at this fine young lady! She can paint she can sew and embrody, she sings and read
And without a wealthy father to pay for that, plus she is florid in the body! She doesnât know hunger!
We did it!
Me: /wearily studying/
My Ancestors: TRULY SHâ what? They? A little unorthodox, but reasonable I suppose. TRULY THEY PROSPER, FOR THEY LIVE IN A DWELLING WITH MANY ROOMS AND ONLY THEIR SPOUSE TO SHARE IT WITH! THEY HAVE DOGS WHO DO NOT PERFORM A FUNCTION! THEY HAVE MANY BOOKS AND DO NOT HAVE TO SPIN THEIR OWN YARN! THEY BATHE AT A WHIM WITH GENTLE SOAP FREE OF LYE! OUR DESCENDANT BRINGS HONOR AND PRIDE TO OUR LINEAGE!
Me: /yawns and sips my coffee/
My Ancestors: /cheer wildly/
Me: *hunched over at my desk nursing a headache.*
My Ancestors: âTruly, we prosper; see here, our infirm descendant need not even work on her poor days, but has the luxury to rest as she sees need! A doctor attends to her illnesses; her clothes are warm and free of pests; she cares for exotic and dangerous animals within her own home! We have found the height of luxury!â
Me: *treats myself to a pineapple and a bunch of bananas*
My Georgian ancestors: ZOOTH SHE HAS BOUGHT A PINEAPPLE! NOT MERELY BORROWED ONE! TRULY SHE HAS ACHIEVED FAR MORE THAN WE COULD KNOW!
me: [puts on warm socks and a blanket, is now warm regardless of the weather outside]
My impoverished Russian Jewish ancestors:
I think part of the reason why we feel so sad is that weâre too far away from raw, numinous experiences. Like you know that post with a picture of the unpolluted night sky where people are reacting in terrified awe not realizing thatâs what the stars really look like?
I think itâs like. You need vivid experiences that canât be easily repeated. You need elemental things. I donât mean this in a crunchy hippie just-try-yoga way I mean this in a way thatâs likeâŠweâre inside all the time and most things we experience are scheduled ahead of time. When there are sidewalks, we follow them, and thereâs always some boring place to go. You need things that no one has any control over and that no one can sell for money.
You need to be outside in a storm and see lightning strike very close to you. You need to meet a wild creature and have to stand very still and almost not even breathe and watch before it vanishes. You need to be alone somewhere very big. You need to go to a place because it looks interesting and be at the wrong place at the wrong time. You need to climb over a fence instead of going in by the gate. You need to hear the exploding sound of a huge flock of birds flying. You need to watch live theater performed by kids on a low budget. You need to be lost somewhere. You need to be barefoot somewhere. You need to sing with other people who are singing. You need to get soaking wet with all of your clothes on and come inside shivering.
hitch your heart to one small thing
reminds me of this!

wish list for people who donât want anything
aka possessions which are just possessions, but which have noticeably improved my quality of life: for when people ask you âwhat do you want for your birthday/Christmas/graduationâ and you instantly transform into St Francis and pledge fealty to Lady Poverty because your mind went blank
nice. new. sheets. I cannot emphasize this one enough. if youâre still using the same sheets you had in college, you should probably get new ones. get yourself some 100% bamboo rayon sheetsâtheyâre silky and perfect for summer and great for sensitive skin! or, if youâre cold all the time, flannel sheets!
kitchen knives. or even just one really good kitchen knife.
new curtainsâblackout if you are a creature of the night like I am
fleece lined anything, but especially sweatpants and hoodies. wool lined socks are also good. if you donât have the option of coming home after work and putting on an entire outfit that is loose and fuzzy, you should change that, because you deserve that option.
cookie sheets with a layer of air between the top and the bottom. the bottoms of your cookies will never burn again.
kitchen scale!!! no more leveling off flour with a knife and getting it all over the table!! now all your measuring is just shoveling stuff in and out of bowls like youâre at the beach. baking is both more accurate and also way more fun.
coffee bean grinder. if you want to upgrade your coffee experience, this is a great one-time purchase. just-ground beans have a much better flavor than pre-ground.
CDs!! ask for a gift card and expand your physical music collection! or a collection of the DVDs for your favorite show!
A few more things!
Good luggage. Whether itâs a suitcase or a duffel bag or even just packing cubes, itâs all helpful!
Good art. If itâs someone you trust, you can ask them to surprise you with a piece they like, otherwise you can have a few back up suggestions of ideas (I saw a framed piece of just the hands from Michaelangeloâs The Creation of Man and have not forgot about it since)
Good good pillows or fluffy blankets to go along with those nice new sheets from above
Office supplies. Pens, markers, sharpies. All the sharpies.
Coffee travel mugs (can one have too many?). If they say they still want more ideas, also ask for a bag of their favorite beans/tea
Look around your house, what do you have that is still from college? Ask for a better one of those.
And for the future planning, especially if youâre me and forget things: make a document of âthings Iâd like but donât want to buy for myself frivolouslyâ and then select items from that for a wishlist.

HEY LADIES . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . DID YOU KNOW UHHHHHHHHH

So whatâs next? You heal. You grow. And you help others.
It is exhausting!
