‘You ran away from home?’ ‘When I was about sixteen,’ said Sirius. ‘I’d had enough.’ ‘Where did you go?’ said Harry, staring at him. ‘Your dad’s place,’ said Sirius. ‘Your grandparents were really good about it; they sort of adopted me as a second son.’
(and I know this set will probably be confusing to some people since a lot of people like Kristin Scott Thomas as Walburga but she’s always been Mrs. Potter to me)
The boys are back in town
It wasn’t often that Sirius was, well, serious, but every now and then a situation called for it. Normally, James’ fancy for Evans was fair game, but ever since that run-in with Snivellus during the O.W.L.s last year, Sirius had felt so bad for his friend that he had completely laid off the teasing. So when James said “she,” Sirius just nodded and started to move off. He felt bad for his mate, really. He’d never been rejected the way Evans had done to James, but it had to suck royal hippogriff.
“Probably,” he answered James, not bothering to comment on Lily. “He’s usually ridiculously early.” He barked a short laugh and continued, “And Pete’ll barely make the train, like always.” He didn’t mention that ever other year he’d been even earlier than Remus, as he would get up early to Floo to his Uncle Alphard’s, who always had a portkey waiting to allow Sirius to avoid his parents and brother.
Just as he kept silent about Evans, James would about his family. It was an unspoken thing between them, to be there for each other but not push, something Si was extremely grateful for. Moony was enough of a mother hen for all of them, he thought wryly.
All those depressing thoughts were pushed from his head by the very attractive sight of a sixth year Hufflepuff who’s name he couldn’t remember. He nudged Prongs with his elbow and nodded at the girl, appreciating Muggle fashion very much in that moment.
Even if James was hung up on Evans, he could still look—might even cheer him up a bit!
There was never a time that James ever truly minded whatever Sirius dished out to him about Lily. In all honesty, had the situation been reversed, and Sirius been the one with a feeling he just couldn’t shake for someone -- James would probably tear the mickey out of him too, at any given opportunity. Completely ranging from frilly sing-song taunts to crude drawings and the like. What any good brother would do, really. However, things had changed and even though James still had feelings for Lily - it wasn't all just fun and games. Maybe because they were getting older. Maybe because the world was revealing itself to be darker than before. Things were strange and complicated now. James wasn't quite so confident anymore, and he was extremely grateful that Sirius had taken to understanding that, without him having to voice it outloud.
"He really is. Probably already in his school robes, too." James added, glad to have a topic other than the redhead to joke about as they moved off the platform. "I wouldn't be surprised if he'll be clasped hands with his Mum, running to make it. Remember that, after holiday? Pretty impressed she actually ran faster than him." This part was easy. They knew one another's topics, and they could grace over them without a hitch or awkward pause in the conversation. There was never a search for the right thing to say, because the other just simply knew that it didn't need to be. Even if they didn't know what it felt like, or what it was like to deal with it, they knew that the other was there, and that was what mattered most.
James had been distracted for a moment, simply taking in the milling about of other students, some with parents, others not. There was a particularly terrified looking young one - had to be a first year -- and then there was an elbow in his ribcage. Not harsh, but enough to pull him out of his own actions and focus on whatever it was that Padfoot wanted him to see instead. Looking over to the Hufflepuff in question, there was a slight raise of James' brow. She certainly was a looker, he'd give her that. A small scratch of his chin, he glanced over to his best friend again and grinned, "Why don't you go over there and sit pretty? Maybe she'll give you a treat."
The boys are back in town
Returning to Hogwarts had never been so bittersweet Sirius thought as he sauntered casually through the barrier that separated Platform 9 ¾ from the Muggle side of King’s Cross Station. In the past, leaving for school had been the highlight of his year, as it meant getting away from those tossers he called family, but this year was different. Instead of sulking the summer away in his dark bedroom, Sirius has spent most of the past two months staying with the Potters, and that made all the difference in the world. Gone were the rantings about Muggles and Muggleborns, the speeches on why Purebloods were supreme–and how the Blacks were the best of the bunch, the glares and snide comments about “good for nothing, blood traitor Gryffindors.” In their place were warm hugs, jokes over family dinners, and rousing Quidditch games around the estate. It was, without a doubt, the best summer he’d ever had, and for once leaving for Hogwarts wasn’t the only bright spot on the horizon.
Still, he couldn’t wait to see Remus and Peter again, or have the chance to put into action the pranks he and James had spent all summer brainstorming. Not to mention he’d be totally lying if he said he wasn’t ready for a glimpse of freshly-tanned female yearmates. Hey, he was only human.
All in all, even with his glorious summer, he was pretty glad to be back. Sixth year was supposed to be the best, the break between O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s, when you were finally old enough to get into all the best kind of mischief. Oh yeah, this year was going to rock.
Stopping a few steps away from the entryway, Sirius waited for James to pop through the portal before he went in search of the other Marauders.
James may or may not have been lingering on the platform for a moment before going through, because he had caught a glimpse of a familiar red-head. Over the years, James had tried to gain her attention and affections with little to no luck. Every now and again there was a glimmer of... well, lack of disdain, but after the events that had piled up last year, James was fairly certain that he would be lucky if she ever spoken to him again. Granted, he had been a prat, hexing Snivellius in the first place - that wasn't the worst of what had transpired that afternoon. Still, Lily had made it clear not to talk to her. So he only looked on from a distance as she and her parents had arrived at the station.
Catching himself, there was a sigh, before heading through the portal where Sirius would be waiting. Their conversations had been steered away from the topic of Lily for a while, and focused on pranks they could accomplish this year. It was a relief and as much of a welcomed distraction for James as he was sure it had been for his best friend as well. Immediately stepping beside Sirius as he had made it through - it had been long enough to know that one needed to get out of the way quickly, or else there was likely a cart and trunk to be rammed into the back of the heels with the next person coming through. So off to the side, James adjusted his glasses, already scanning for the others.
"Should probably move off soon." James said, a quick glance to Sirius, "She's here too." He didn't have to say who, or why. He'd know. Hell, James probably didn't have to say anything at all, really, Sirius probably could feel all the weird confusion and emotions that seemed to surge around James in the the wake of her. "Moony is probably already on the train anyway, yeah?"
Filch: What are you brats doing in my office?!
Sirius: Oh, you know…
James: Breaking into your office…
Sirius: Repossessing our personal property…
James: And going through your private files, for good measure…

I expect you’re tired of hearing this, but…
Well lads,
I’m starting to think he’ll be in hiding from you and Sirius for probably the whole year. But my chocolate stash is getting low so this trip really needs to happen.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that they’ve made you Head Boy. I mean, I think it’s brilliant and all but did they even take a look a your detention record before making the decision?
We can't have that now, can we? Your furry little problem always seems a bit worse with a resounding lack of chocolate.
Apparently not. Either that or it was a criteria that no one knew about.
Well lads,
"My thoughts exactly. Yeah, and Meadowes keeps harping on us to go visit her and all. It’s still bloody weird you’re Head Boy now. Your badge is even shinier than Moony’s was when he first got it. How did it even happen, did Dumbledore say anything?"
"Aye, yeah. Be good to visit with her. The only thing that he really said to me about it was that he thought it'd be a good thing. What with all that happened and everything, I guess he meant that the focus that it takes would help or something. Still think I'm one of the last people that would've been chosen. To be in that room when he announced that to the rest of the professors..."
Well lads,
"As well you should, you are my forever Prongs. Hogsmeade Trip with Moony and Peter if he decides to show himself? You need a little more irresponsibility in your life Prongs my boy."
"Until the end, mate. You better believe it... I feel like I'm already suffocating with all this formal crap. Like a really cruel joke this is."
Well lads,
Prongs, you know that I can’t say no to a trip to Honeydukes. Not even if I have to break fifty school rules to get there. Where have you been anyways? Padfoot and I thought you might have drowned in the lake.
Ace. I know Padfoot will be up for it too, and Wormtail if he ever decides to pop out of hiding.
Ah, yeah that. I was...I had a lot of meetings to attend. I've been around, but they've just had me so busy since the start of term. Sorry about that, mate.
When are you going to tell your friends you're the new Head Boy? Are you finally making your way over to the straight and narrow?
The straight and narrow. Right. That's a good one.
S'far as tellin' them, they'll find out here soon. Sirius already knows, but I expect the others will soon, too.
Is your mum doing okay?
Okay...Okay as she can be? Don't know about it, now that I'm back out of the house for term and all.
How was the rest of your summer?
"An adjustment, more than anything. I mean it had some better moments comparatively... but you don't just bounce back, you know?"
Where did you even go any way?
"I've been here, I've just been...busy."
