New Addition: Zamioculcas Zamiifolia

Name: [none]

Type: Zamioculcas Zamiifolia (ZZ plant)

Comments: I saw this plant in a garden centre, all three crammed into one far too small pot (the plastic was stretched from the roots needing too much space, I had to cut the pot off them). Immediately repotted them into individual and bigger pots.

The roots look like this if anyone hasn't seen them:

Needs:

Bright to low indirect light (will grow slower with less light)

Well draining soil - allow soil to dry out completely before watering, this plant can survive without water for months!

Probably toxic to cats and dogs (there is some debate about the severity of issues caused by ingestion)

Tiger Tooth Aloe - Update: Fresh Roots!!

This is the one I had in that small glass by itself!! It's been just over a week! I've put it in a pot now, hopefully it will thrive!

Sadly some of the others didn't make it, I'm not sure if they needed more space in the water or if they were just in a worse state already.

New Addition: Thanksgiving Cactus

Name: [none]

Type: Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata)

Notes: My grandma had one of these, they're absolutely gorgeous! I used to have one from a cutting from a friend's plant years ago, but I went away for uni term break and it dried out sadly, so I've got another chance now!

Needs:

Shade/partial sun exposure

Well draining and airy but moist soil

Mostly safe for cats and dogs (ingestion of large amounts might lead to digestional tract upset)

New Addition: Tradescantia Zebrina

The colour is more purple irl! I walked past this guy in a shop and couldn't resist... Hope he thrives under my care!

Type: Tradescantia Zebrina (Wandering Dude)

Notes: beautiful purple colour, I repotted him as soon as I got home, and I'm really excited to see him grow!

Needs:

Bright light

Keep moist, water when top inch of soil feels dry

Perry the Parlour Palm - Update

He's got a name! Literally decided as I was typing the title. And he's growing so well!! It's such a joy to watch the new leaves uncurl.

I've finally given him some fertiliser (I've legit just not fertilised any of my plants ever until now, oop)

Tiger Tooth Aloe - Updates

I know some of these also look really crunchy, but my good, two days after I put them into water they'd already started shooting out fresh new roots! When I first got the cuttings a few years ago they looked much worse and bounced back fast, so I have hope!

New Addition: Pothos

Just got this recently! While repotting it from the pot I bought it in I accidentally separated off one bit, so now I have two. Oh no, whatever will I do (/s).

Name: [none, though I keep accidentally calling it Porthos, so maybe that]

Type: Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

Notes: I'm really excited for this one, it's a plant I've wanted for ages, and I really hope I can make it trail all over my living room.

Needs:

Bright but indirect light (leaves will turn light if it gets too much sun and may turn fully green in too little light)

Ordinary, well draining soil, not too moist

Water when the top two inches are dry, it will also start to droop when it needs water

Aloe Veras - Update

So I'm down to like 11 aloe veras now (I lost 3 to root rot recently and decided it was time to give them all a makeover)

I've not had enough pots or good soil mix for all of them, but The Internet (TM) told me that you can grow them in water, so I figured I'd give that a try. Until recently most of them have been in shared pots with spider plants, which took up the entire soil space with roots, which I think is why they all look a bit crunchy rn. I'm really having to remind myself to not overwater them now by remembering their lost brethren.

I'll see how this all goes, they've not shown any signs of recovery yet in the water, but it has been less than a week.

Type: Dragon Tree

Notes: No issues with this one either, it dropped a few leaves when I didn't water it enough once, but recovered very quickly when I gave it enough water again. I've got it in standard compost at the moment and I'm not having issues with that. It's grown to about twice the size it was when I got it (which was about 5 years ago)

It's probably not getting enough direct sunlight here (neither am I though tbf), but we're both coping about as well as can be expected.

Needs: Well-draining soil full sun/partial shade (leaves may burn in direct sunlight) don't overwater!

Type: Parlour Palm

Notes: I got this when it was 1/3 this size and only had two tiny leaves. It's grown very cosistently with no issues. It keeps getting more leaves which is always fun to see. I recently finally looked up the proper soil mix for this and repotted it (it also needed a bigger pot anyways), but previously I had it in standard compost without any issues.

Needs: indirect light, light shade is also okay fast draining soil don't overwater!

Safe for cats and dogs!

Type: Peace Lily (baby, came off my bigger plant when I was taking dead leaves out)

Notes: Very chill plant as well, copes well with the lack of light here, always flowers when I forget to water it for a while. I hope this baby plant makes it, but the roots looked good when I potted it, so I have hope.

Needs: Water when the top 1/3 of the soil is dry indirect light generic compost works well

Type: Aloe Vera

Struggles I've had with them: Quite a few, the original plant died last year (root rot), I need to remember that aloe vera's are the kinds of plants I need to just forget I own and only water very very occasionally. I've now swapped the soil for a better mix for aloe vera's as well, hopefully that will have them perk up again

I have more of these, probably about 10 at this point, they keep spawning more children all the time

Needs: well-draining soil bright, indirect light (window sill in Scotland has been working well for me, so "bright" is relative) let the soil dry between waterings, then water thoroughly

June 2021 vs February 2026

Name: [no name yet, open to suggestions]

Type: Echinopsis (probably - according to various plant identification websites I've tried, unsure about the species as well), the flowers it had when I got it were fake and I removed them.

Size (tallest one) : 8cm (2021), 42cm (2026)

Struggles I've had with it: None. This one is the chillest of my plants probably. I didn't even get proper cactus soil, it's in simple compost. I briefly considered changing that recently, but with how well it's been doing these last 4.5 years that felt unnecessary. Might reconsider if it starts looking a bit sad in the future.

Needs: bright light/direct sunlight (mine's doing well with no direct light) very well-draining soil let soil dry out between watering, then water thoroughly
