A neat reminder of who is the king of surf films!
Phil Stutz, who tends to some of the town's top studio executives, explains the need to make decisions quickly, alone and on instinct, and "microtransactions" that get you respect — even when you've been fired.
A few good reminders about leadership and human nature.
Greenpeace have made a powerful, cinematic, environmental and musical statement with this video.Â
The sound of the ice crashing is stunningly terrifying. Like electricity running through the piece at high voltage.Â
Well worth a watch and a campaign well worth fighting.Â
A phenomenal tribute to the physical art form and craft of filmmaking.
There’s almost a sense of mise en abyme as you watch and listen to sound being made while watching a film about sound being made!
EXPERIENCE
As an adventure filmmaker with a background in fashion films ... this latest video campaign from Chanel is ticking all my boxes!
Slick - Clean - Adventurous - Cinematic - Landscapes  - ClassÂ
(It’s also interactive!)
This was passed on to me from Kirk Williams - a friend of a friend that works in film with me. This is Kirk’s film and it speaks for his talent and a filmmaker but what’s more inspiring is his talent as a human being.
The film will say it far more eloquently with far more heart than I could convey here in a short blog post, but he is a prime example of someone who just won’t be put down and succeeds no matter what the obstacle.Â
There’s also beautiful cinematography in here and some sweet drone work, so for the film nerds take a peek!
I’ve recently had the privilege of being able to work with a talented drone operator ...
Larkin Carey of Falkor Aerials, whose work features in this montage, is one of the most adventurous and talented pilots out there. I’ve watched him carry his custom built drone across a raging river in Alaska (nearly losing the whole rig during a dangerous river crossing) and up a snowy ridge-line at 18,000ft in the northern Indian Himalayas.
This last one was a highlight. In the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir, it’s a mission just to get the drone into a country where they are banned not to mention an area where drones are synonymous with death and destruction.Â
With the phenomenal effort of my fellow producers at 1iOpen Productions we achieved the first civilian drone flight in the region. As I write, I’m currently rendering the first draft of the short film documenting how we did it.
Relating back the posted video... look out for the glacial shots - that’s Larkin and my colleagues filming and cutting our story from Alaska. We lost a camera and nearly lost an executive producer for that shot.
A beautiful yet copied style of video from Salomon.Â
They say copying is the best form of flattery, so who is Salomon flattering in this video? I blogged about Leonardo Dalessandri’s video Watchtower of Turkey in my first Tumblr post, and my most recent post referenced Dalessandri’s edit style in a Vincent Urban video about Japan. I’ve also seen the edit style in Rob Whitworth’s flow motion timelapse videos on various busy cities just as Dubai and no doubt other editors have noticed this style around the traps.Â
Is it new? Was it Dalessandri’s first? Have we all followed suit?Â
I love watching trends ripple through an art form. It’s how a community of artists should interact, learning, appropriating and growing from one another. However! Grow is the operative word here. The danger is simply copying. In order for there to be any progression in any form of human practise, be it science, art, philosophy, music... once the practise is mastered we must add our individual contribution to it.Â
We’re all different for a reason, so let’s not get stuck in copying the cool guy.Â
A Life In The Boys Club
Recently I had the honour to be published in the online magazine She Explores. They asked me what it's like to be the one woman in an all-male crew.
It is a topic I can write extensively and passionately about having experienced the best and worst of working in close quarters with men.Â
The full article and it’s beautiful presentation can be read here, however I feel the entire experience and any advice you care to take can be summarised with; “You must be good at what you do, physically and mentally.”
This film is a collection of audiovisual moments and memories of a 3-week railway journey through Japan in 2015. We were whizzing through the country with the Shinkansen…
It’s been a while since I’ve taken the time to write or post anything, but this wonderful edit by Vincent Urban inspired me to share and get posting again.Â
I see Vincent has used a lot of the same edit and sound techniques as used in Watch Tower of Turkey by Leonardo Dalessandri, and I don’t blame him, it’s certainly a style worth trying to appropriate. It’s highly engaging, rhythmic music and sound engineering driving the mesmerising visual cuts... It’s as film should be; a seamless integration of sound and visual to evoke an emotion and tell a story.Â
These short travel pieces - rich pallets of exotic imagery - certainly evoke emotion - desire to travel in this filmmaker’s footsteps. The only thing lacking is story but at 4:00 minutes it’s not a serious film crime as the tempo of this video races you to it’s exciting end before you realise nothing’s happening.Â
I have visited Japan a few times and can vouch this is representation of the country isn’t far from the truth... just note it’ll take you much longer to experience what this video delivers in 4 minutes.Â
I look forward to exploring more of Vincent’s work as I delve into his portfolio.Â
