Every hockey player ever being a white privileged man and growing up to be right-wing is so annoying to me. 'Cause I'm European, and these American sports being dominated by a certain race or political ideology seems so weird. Like, what I don't get is; are there no people of colour in Canada or in any of the American "Hockey" states? Not to be accusing anybody of anything, but I feel like hockey has a very unaddressed systemic racism problem. Am I crazy for saying that?

I agree that it is a predominantly white sport but I don’t think that people of colour are necessarily barred from playing it or making it to the big leagues. From what I know (from friends who played growing up and people who are literally getting drafted in the next few years) it’s literally just commitment. And commitment to hockey that has the intention of making it to juniors or more comes with a lot of money and sacrifice. And I’m not saying that people of colour don’t have the opportunity or capability, because they do, but I think traditionally there are stereotypes around who tends to play hockey. I see it like that for most sports, like basketball in North America having a higher proportion of black athletes and even soccer which is the most universal sport being dominated by Europeans and South Americans.

There are so many amazing players that aren’t white in the NHL and I'd love to see more, but I really just think it's limited because of tradition.
