Pachyderm will be performing new songs from their forthcoming album, MAXIMUM, for the first time at Divan Orange, Montreal, on the 22nd June 2017. The show is to raise money for the vinyl pressing of the album, which is due for release, September, 2017.

The band are playing two sets – 9.30pm and 10.45pm.

Also there will be DJ Sons of Suns playing a mix of psych, krautrock, electronica, and rare groove, throughout the night.

This year for Montreal’s Nuit Blanche (27 February), Brothers and Sisters Records is bringing musical Propulsion to the indoor ice skating rink Atrium Le 1000 (located inside Bonaventure Metro), with an evening of live performances and DJ’s from 5PM to Midnight.

pachyderm will be performing two sets over the course of the evening. The band are notorious for playing in atypical spaces such as underneath the Van Horne bypass, on top of a tug boat, and for Nuit Blanche in 2015, an indoor, public swimming pool. pachyderm will be playing songs from their recent album Two Weeks of Spring, which reaches into the netherworld between Eastern and Western musical traditions and fuses it all with the power and the fury of rock.

Electronic-duo V O Y E U R will also be performing a set of beat driven, night-time soundtrack music, to send skaters spinning around the arena towards the midnight hour.

Finally, DJ’s Sons of Suns will be mixing up some soul, disco, rock’n’roll and psych music between the live sets to keep the triple lutzing going on in the rink.

The Atrium Le 1000 ice rink will be illuminated in a red ambiance for the event.

This event is a co-production between Brothers and Sisters Records and Atrium Le 1000.

Two Weeks Of Spring was recorded live and improvised and that shines through; it has a natural flow and spontaneity that is refreshing in this day and age of overdubs, over-production and 'cut'n'paste' recording techniques. The level of musicianship is equalled only by the level of imagination and the distillation of global reference points. It is an album that brings new meaning to the word 'soundscape'... a work of consumate skill and beauty.

Festival L’éclair – 31 October – La Passe : All nighter of bands/DJ’s/dancers and festive freakiness

DONDEpiano and Brothers and Sisters have joined forces for the first time to present Festival Éclair, an all nighter of bands, dancers, DJs and festive freakiness, which will be held at the anarchist library La Passe, Downtown Montreal (1214, de la Montagne).

Starting at 9pm and continuing until dawn, several groups who have distinguished themselves in 2015 on the local music scene will be performing: opening the night in the main room will be synth-prog power trio Room Control, pachyderm will reinterpret their album Two Weeks of Spring launched earlier this year, Yokofeu will revive their flaming performance from last Francouvertes, and FELP and CHIENVOLER will dramatically raise the temperature of the room.

In a second room sonic experimenters V O Y E U R will be improvising mini-sets throughout the night and will do a full performance at 2am, followed by DJ sets by FELP, Byron and Tom Jarvis.

The others rooms will be occupied by dancers from Nebuleuse and Atypique le collectif, two new dance companies, for you to live immersive experiences throughout the building during the course of the evening.

Under the artistic direction of Felix Petit.

A Halloween costume is appropriate, but not required.

RIDE THE TEMPO REVIEW OF 2WOS

The White Stripes may not have invented the notion of the power duo, but I am hard pressed to come up with any prior examples (no, The Carpenters and The Captain & Tennille don’t count). In any case, since the early days of this millennium Canada has embraced this configuration as much as anyone (if not more so). Death From Above 1979 has been around for years, and more recently you have the likes of The Pack A.D., P.S. I Love You and Cousins. Then there’s Montreal’s Pachyderm. The startling thing about these two is that they not only pack a punch (an essential attribute to be considered a power duo) but they manage to create remarkably textured soundscapes.

The ten tracks of brilliant post-rock on ‘Two Weeks of Spring’ take you on a dizzying spin around the world. Through the power of their music your skin is scorched by a desert wind, your nose is filled with the scents of a bustling Indian market, and your ears catch the sound of a lonely loon on a northern lake. The stage is set immediately with the opening track “The Return to Bam Citadel”. A synth drones like the ruddy glow of a slowly rising sun, while tentative drums patter like a gentle rain. Reverb guitar splits the air, changing the mood dramatically. Strains of Eastern mystery blend in with the spaghetti Western twang in the foreground and a cool jazz sax wanders around in the background. Finally, the tune takes flight with full Eastern rhythm and stomping drums.

This is just the beginning. The album unfolds with track after track of similar riches. The tune is generally carried by Tom Jarvis’ guitar but the mood is often supplied by Nico Braesch’s widely varied percussion. It’s interesting to note that the two don’t just represent anglophone Canada and francophone Canada, respectively, but also English rock traditions and French modern music. On “Fidèle” Jarvis takes on lead vocals with a song reminiscent of British proto-prog (think Traffic). Conversely, Braesch sings on the francophone “Lever la voile” and vaguely evokes French musical styles of the ’50s and ’60s.

Pachyderm’s mastery is such that you get the sense that they are going to create magic every time they pick up their instruments. Judging by ‘Two Weeks of Spring’, they are quite capable of doing just that. It is fair to say they occupy the same rarefied space as post-rock giants Godspeed You! Black Emperor. But, of course, it’s all the more impressive because Jarvis/Braesch can produce the same level of complexity with just the two of them.
