“Mike’s very good at bullying me into things, you’re not wrong.” Anthony said with a laugh. He didn’t actually mind the prodding though. It meant Mike cared. That’s what mattered in the end. And he knew how to handle Anthony’s fretting.

“I know it’s probably not that logical, I just… worry a lot. Shock and surprise.” He mumbled. “I really like her, and I don’t want to lose her over something I can’t help.”

“He has a way with words like that.” She chuckled along with him. He just didn’t know how to be soft with his words but Michael was usually looking out in the best interests of his friends. It helped more when it was an actual serious conversation and not something that didn’t matter.

“It’s natural to worry about things that could hurt us. Trust me, Luna will accept you.” If there was anyone who knew what it was like to feel different it was Luna, and she had one of the kindest souls Padma had seen. She liked Anthony and she wouldn’t shun him over this.

“That’s the plan, once I actually get the nerve up to talk about it.” Anthony said sounding sheepish. If Padma knew it was a good idea then it undoubtably was, he just needed to steel his nerves and do it. He’d get himself together, he would. Luna was amazing and she deserved the truth.

“I think on our next date. I’ll… I’ll tell her then. And hopefully she won’t leave me or anything, ‘cus that would kinda suck.”

“Well if you ever need someone to convince you to do it, just owl me before hand. I can give you a pep talk. Michael might be good as well, he’s kind of intimidating like that,” Padma mused. Michael was the type of person that could give you a not so subtle or gentle push to do something if you were nervous. 

“Luna wouldn’t do that. If I know her, she’ll be accepting especially because like the respectful gentleman you are I know you haven’t been invading her thoughts. She’ll accept you.”

Padma didn’t have many friends, she’d grown shy and private over her years at Hogwarts. That’s why she trusted the friends she did have so much. They were precious, none maybe more so than Anthony. He was someone she treasured second to her sister and she knew he’d do stupid things to keep her safe.

“Oh!” Hermione exclaimed as she put her book down and pulled off her things that were covering the table“Yeah, of course Padma” she smiled, shoving her loose papers and files into her bag. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to take up the whole thing. It wasn’t as busy when I sat down, didn’t realise all the tables had filled up.”

“It’s alright, I’ve been guilty of sprawling my papers all over the table back in the library,” Padma assured her. It was just nice to see things right in front of you, whether organized or not. Made getting to work easier in Padma’s eyes. Easier than having to go back into your bag and pull out everything again. “They fill up quite quickly don’t they? Unfortunate side effect of everyone having the same lunch breaks.”

I’m not saying I don’t know how hard she has it right now. Who’s been taking care of her? Two, who the fuck do you think put it there? Or, half of it there. It’s my fucking kid too. And it is a problem but whatever. I’m getting you fuckers back one day. Next holiday, you’ll all be drowning in gifts.”

“I think I’d rather puke,” she deadpanned. One from the fact that Michael actually thought that she’d be interested (he didn’t but she still didn’t enjoy the thought) and two from the fact that he joked she’d be mad at Lisa for snatching him up. Made her shiver. “I really don’t need to talk about this anymore Michael, we’re getting in territory I don’t want to think about. Save it for when Anthony and Lu get married, if he ever asks her out. Maybe save it for being nicer to Terry as well? He’s a little weird but you give him so much shit.”

“No, not really.” He said sadly. Though at least they’d gotten outside the door. Pretty alright all things considered, but it only barely felt like process when he could see the doorway without even having to squint.

Walter noticed Padma at last and immediately began purring, making his small little happy chirps that meant he wanted attention. Well at least his cat was consistent.

He flushed, happy and embarrassed all at once. “Not yet. I keep getting nervous every time I try. And I still need to tell her about,” he waved his free hand vaguely at his temple to indicate his Legilimency, “all of that either.”

Padma immediately squatted back down at Walter’s insistence, going to pet the cat on the back. She’d always liked Walter and thought he was a pretty well behaved pet, probably perfect for Anthony’s chaotic living style. One less thing to worry about.

“Well I don’t have much experience with asking someone out but I’d say just go for it. Get it out first before you can convince yourself to wait any longer,” she suggested. Even if it came out awkward Luna probably wouldn’t mind. Padma thought she’d actually be quite happy. “You might want to start off with that one first. It is pretty important.”

Lisa shook her head, the tears falling freely now due to her pregnancy hormones. “I can’t go shopping. I’ll have to ask for a size large. I’m a small. But now my stomach is huge. I’m like a whale Padma. A whale. I can’t even wear heels because my feet swell.” She was clearly distraught, getting caught up in her own emotions the more she talked. 

“You don’t look like a whale Lisa, you look beautiful.” It seemed as if her words had not helped at all and Padma wasn’t sure what the next step should be. If she kept repeating how great she looked would Lisa eventually believe it? Was she just making things worse? “Heels are hard to wear anyways, come on Lisa the size of the clothes don’t matter. That’s what Parvati’s always saying, she’s always going on about how great you look as well.”

“Shut up. You love when I’m a brat. It’s what makes me special.” Michael’s friendship with Padma had never been direct or simple. It was based on him being an arsehole to her. “Oh, it’s not my special day? Half the baby is me. I contributed to that shit.” He joked, knowing Lisa needed a day just for her. “She loves me when I look inappropriate.” Hell, he could show up in just his pants and his girlfriend would be happy. “Yeah? But get it through their heads. Cards are fine. Gifts are too much. And thanks. For helping me with this shit.”

“I’m pretty sure that’s all in your head.” Michael was delusional but it was a type of delusional Padma had gotten used to when he’d constantly bother her in the library. Sort of comforting, in its own way. “Oh and are you the one that has to carry that baby and give birth to it? I’d say Lisa deserves a little more of the recognition for the whole thing, which I’m sure all her friends are telling you.” Lisa had a good support group and Padma didn’t doubt they didn’t let Michael know how much she was loved and doted on. “I’ll try but no promises about the gifts. It’s not a problem, you’re both my friends as well.”

Lunchtime. The one half hour a day Hermione forced herself to step away from her desk, only ever working through lunch when the days were really busy. Thankfully, today was not one of those days, and Hermione had the chance to leave her desk full of papers. She brought her book with her, something to keep her occupied while eating because annoyingly her ipod didn’t work in the Ministry, which never made sense to her, surely someone would have figured out the charms by now to fix that. She heard a cough in front of the table she was sitting at and looked up “Can I help you?” she asked. 

“Can I sit here?” Padma asked again, her lunch in hands. “The other tables are taken. I promise not to disturb your reading.” Since she was a reader as well Padma knew the frustration of other’s trying to talk to you as you were loosing yourself in a book. She didn’t want to pull Hermione from that but did find her empty table the most enjoyable one to sit at. She wasn’t sure if she could handle a conversation with any of the officials from her department or a gossip filled lunch from Ernie on her break.

“So what if I can’t fit into my cute clothes right now? I’m totally fine. It doesn’t bother me at all.” Lisa said while her eyes welled up out of frustration at the long dress she was wearing right now. All of her mini dresses were basically turning into shirts now, it was extremely unfair. Usually she had her hormones in check, but today everything seemed to set her off and she didn’t know how to stop it. 

Padma’s mind panicked a bit, hurrying to figure out what to do. “You know what that means,” she offered. “You get to buy more cute clothes! You get to go shopping.” Here’s where having more girl friends would have helped but years of mostly interracting with Ravenclaw boys was starting to inhibit her. So she just tried to think of about what her sister and Lavender would do. “Think of how cute you’ll be.”

“Oh, it has it’s nights,” Hannah replied with a small laugh. Some nights there were patrons who became rowdy. There were other nights when it was slow. Others when she was able to have great conversations with the people that she met. “That would be nice,” she admitted lowly, “Tonight’s been pretty slow, though, so thank Merlin for that.” She thought about her schedule before nodding at Padma’s question. “Sunday would be perfect. The afternoon or evening? I usually have brunch with Ernie and his parents in the morning.” 

“Guess that means I can stay longer then.” On a busy night Padma would probably only stop by for a drink or two and then be on her way as to not be a burden. Since it was slow she thought she might stay however, take her time with her drink. If only she’d broughten her book with her, then maybe she could have read as well. “Evening works fine for me as well. It’s sweet how close you are with his family, you two are pretty close aren’t you?”

Michael stuck his tongue out at her, blowing a raspberry in her direction. “If you make me wear a fucking argyle sweater and glasses then it will be.” He might have been becoming a dad but he wasn’t getting fucking old or boring. He wasn’t going to start wearing dad clothes and yelling about them keeping the fire on all the time. “I just don’t want her to worry. She doesn’t need to stress about this shit. She should just have the time to relax and let me take care of it. She’s coming too? Pads, you’re trying to get in trouble. I know your game. And Tony can deal. Tell them to bring cards or something.”

“Hush you’re being such a brat. It’s Lisa’s special day so just wear whatever you think she’d like.” Padma paused. “Scratch that you’ll manage to say something inappropriate. Just wear whatever you usually do and sit there and accept the gifts that your friends want to give you in celebration. Me and Penelope will figure everything else out,” she assured him. While not ideal it might be better to actually just bypass Michael’s approval and go straight to Penelope. Otherwise he’d just complain about every little thing. “Of course she’s coming she’s her cousin, and also a friend. I’ll be sure to relay the message.”

“Normally he doesn’t, we’re trying something new.” He gave his cat an exasperated look. Walter ignored him entirely and continued chewing on the grass. “Don’t you want to say hi to Petal, Walt?” Anthony asked the cat.

At Padma’s question he went very pink. “I’ve been spending a lot of time with Lu. We went on a date, and we’ve been hanging out loads. I think she might be my girlfriend?”

“Is it working out? I’ve heard you have to get them used to leashes when they’re young otherwise they become quite stubborn about them.” It had come up in a book somewhere, maybe when she was younger and Parvati had begged their parents for a pet. It hadn’t quite worked out, mostly because they knew that the twins would get bored in a few weeks and shoulder the responsibility onto them.

Padma stood back up, this time to face Walter’s human owner. “You think? So you haven’t asked yet?” she asked him. “That’s a good sign though, I’m glad you’ve found someone you really like. Luna’s lovely.”

Hannah figured that there wasn’t much that Padma could tell her about her job and that was okay. She didn’t plan on pushing for any sort of information. She just wanted to make sure that her friend was happy with what she was doing. “I’m glad that it keeps you interested!” She replied brightly with a smile. Bartending wasn’t exactly what Hannah had planned on doing with her life, but she enjoyed it. The blonde lit up when Padma mentioned bringing over recipes of her own. “Please! I’d love to make a day out of it if you’re free, of course.” 

“What’s it like here? Honestly, you barmaids should be paid more for the chaos you have to endure.” While Padma didn’t have the social skills to keep up with any job in the service industry she’d often wondered what it would be like. Everyone talked about the rushes and the stories and that sparked her curiosity enough. “Sunday work for you? I can make a trip to the market to get the ingredients we need before then.”
