Red Fox by Debbie Tubridy
Who is alone now, will stay long alone, will lie awake, read, get long letters written, and through the streets that follow up and down will wander restless, when the leaves are driven.
Rainer Maria Rilke, from “Autumn Day,” The Ecco Anthology of International Poetry (Ecco, 2010)
» Supernatural Creatures: Shtrigas
Shtrigas derive from Albanian folklore. They are typically female, and are vampiric witches that suck the blood of infants in the dead of night, and once finished, turn into some form of insect (i.e. a bee, moth, or fly) to leave. They are usually depicted as old hags with disfigured faces, spiteful stares, pale grey, blue, or green eyes, and ragged clothing. It’s very rare for a male shtriga to be known (usually referred to as shtriga, shtrigu, or shrtigan).
It is also believed that shtriga are not born, but made. Often when a woman becomes a witch in Albanian folklore it is believed she can no longer of have children, thus she feeds on them. Once bitten by a shtriga, the infant becomes deathly ill. The only way to cure them is for the shtriga them self to spit in the infant’s mouth.
The only known ways to ward off a shtriga is with garlic, to ward off the evil eye. Since infants most often catch the gaze of the evil eye, when meeting an infant people will touch the child’s nose, saying masha’allah. Another common use to ward of witches in the Albanian culture is salt.

”Pete—Peter Bernar—ddone. You didn’ come…come for the—the animals?” [ he chances a glance over his shoulder and away again, catches a glimpse of dark hair and doe eyes. she looks safe. clark ingram looked safe too. peter lifts a hand to gesture disjointedly at the cages all around the barn, head turned away again save the occasional fleeting glance. ]
“Ththey keep sayin’ I can’ ah…can’ take care of—of dem all.”
"No, of course not, why would I take the animals?"
Padding closer to wire cages the girls sticks her fingers through the mesh, stroking her fingers across the matted fur of a rabbit, it's not in a good condition but she can talk about that later- not questioning his misdirected glances in her general direction or the lack of eye contact.
"I believe you love these animals, their enclosures are cramped but- they're yours all the same."
justxscared:
”Whhh—who ah’ you?”
He doesn’t turn to look at them.
"My name is Dakota- why? Who are you?"
Pähkänäkallio by Hannu Tenhunen
Your heart is so heavy, and I pitied you for it. Once. Before I realized it is heavy because you have so much love. You are pained because you’re all the good in the world trapped in one body, breaking at the seams, and you’re a beautiful explosion just waiting to happen.

Lion @ Masai Mara by Andre Marais
give yourself over to the wolf. let it eat the parts of you that are sick, that are damaged beyond salvage. let the wolf in and let it clean house, and let it leave again. the wolf knows which parts must be swallowed. you do not need what it takes, and where it bites you the wounds will heal. let the wolf in and let it eat you, and let it leave again.
“You wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down.”
Toni Morrison, Song of Solomon (via wordsnquotes)
I can take care of myself.
