would you mind expanding on the "problems with Neowiccans other than rede-thumping" thing? or pointing me in the direction of information on it? I'm not trying to attack you/question the validity of the statement, I've just always assumed rede thumping was the only issue and would like to learn more.
Pagans in general have a very bad problem with certain bad behaviors, and for almost all of those bad behaviors, Neowiccans tend to be the most regular offenders. This is not just my personal opinion; many many many observers will back me on this if you dispute my claim.
The bad behaviors would generally be as follows. NO Neowiccans are not the ONLY people that do these things. They are, however, the most FREQUENT and RAMPANT offenders. The vast majority of times you see a pagan do this, it is a Neowiccan.
cultural appropriation (for instance, non-Jews practicing Kabbalah, non-NAs using smudging, non-Catholics using Novena candles and rosaries, fucking dreamcatchers in general, etc etc).Â
not recognizing that certain cultures are closed or require initiation (for instance, practicing Santeria without being initiated, practicing NA belief systems without being NA, claiming you are Wiccan when you are not initiated into a Gardnerian or Alexandrian coven, etc. Closely related to cultural appropriation).
entitlement/not recognizing that knowledge or titles need to be earned and that you are not automatically allowed to do anything you want just because ~*~paganism~*~ (for example, every teenage Neowiccan on the planet declaring themselves a High Priestess, or the tendency of pagans to “steal” personal private practices from other more experienced pagans a la “oh you’ve got ten years of experience dealing with this one entity only you deal with well now I’m going to deal with them too even though all I know about them is the little you’ve mentioned publicly”).
being actually fucking allergic to research/making false claims about history (for instance, anyone who thinks the “Burning Times” as described really happened, or people who expect more experienced pagans to just tell them how to do things so they don’t have to look it up, or people who claim that before Evil Patriarchy took over there was a universal Great Mother religion that worshiped the sacred feminine)
Taking deities out of context or simplifying them into tropes or rewriting them to suit an archetype that does not belong to their culture (for instance, claiming that Artemis, Selene, and Hekate are a Maiden/Mother/Crone goddess, or worshiping a Wiccan deity by a Greek goddess’s name, or viewing Thor as the god of lightning that’s it end of subject and ignoring the actual complexities and other areas he has dominion over)
shaming religions or religious practices Neowiccans think are “evil” (including but not limited to Satanism, Luciferianism, Christianity, Islam, the worship of “violent” deities like Ares, Tyr, or Thor, the worship of “destructive” deities like Loki or Ares, the worship of “patriarchal” deities like Zeus, or Odin, or Poseidon, or Yahweh, or the worship of “dark” deities like Haides or Lucifer)Â
erasing non-Wiccan pagans (for instance, assuming everyone observes the Wheel of the Year, actually fucking not realizing there are non-wiccan pagans don’t laugh I’ve seen them do it, claiming X religion doesn’t count as paganism and they do this most often with Satanists and Christopagans, using the phrase “All pagans ____” ever, thinking Witch is synonymous with Wiccan, thinking Pagan is synonymous with Wiccan, thinking all pagans practice witchcraft, thinking all pagans worship nature, etc)
Enforcing a gender binary that erases or shames LGBTIA pagans and forces a harmful stereotype on both LGBTIA and cis/het pagans, especially those who are not capable of or willing to reproduce (for instance, the idea that balance must be between a male god and female goddess, the insistence that women fall into a maiden/mother/crone life path, shaming or attacking women who worship gods or men who worship goddesses, claiming women MUST worship a goddess or they’re neglecting the “sacred feminine” don’t laugh I’ve been accused of that before, assuming soft fertile peaceful things = female and hard fierce warrior things = male, the OVERWHELMING emphasis on childrearing status in a woman’s life, JUST FUCKING CONSTANT DISCUSSION OF THE ~*~MAGICK~*~ OF MENSTRUATION WHAT THE FUCK PEOPLE SERIOUSLY??, etc)
and of course, rede-thumping (which for those who aren’t familiar with the term, would include assuming all pagans follow the rede or that the rede is a universal law that applies to everyone. Most noticeable when Neowiccans rede-thump in order to attack or complain about witches who curse)
I think I’ve covered everything, but keep an eye on reblogs or replies to this post because I’m sure my followers will think of other examples.Â
